A/N: This is just something I came up with and it isn't one of my normal Hank and Olivia stories. This takes place about a year from now. I don't own any of the characters.
What Could Have Been
The last several years for Olivia had been difficult with Ed's suicide, Simon's death and Elliot's return to the NYPD following Kathy's tragic death. While she cared for Elliot and pretty much always had, she didn't love him the way he apparently loved her. They agreed to keep things platonic but Elliot was undercover a lot, so she rarely heard from him.
Things had been going much better for Hank. After losing most of the people he cared about, facing his own near death experience and almost losing Trudy after she was shot, Nina had come back from Denver and they had a talk. While he wasn't sure what to think when she initially told him she had feelings for him, he realized he felt something for her too. He was tired of being alone. At first, they had decided to keep things quiet but he ended up taking her to Adam and Kim's wedding, so his squad knew about them. He had even introduced her to Erin, Olive and Daniel and things seemed to go well. She was even included in their holiday plans. Nina could no longer handle Intelligence's cases, which she hated but she still made time to go see Hank during the day. Peter Stone had come back to Chicago after leaving New York, so he was back to handling their cases again.
Olivia had gotten a call from Burgess about a case they had, which was something similar to a case she had several years ago, so she and Fin were planning to head to Chicago to help out and they were leaving Curry in charge, while they were gone. Noah was staying with Rollins and Carisi. The last time they had seen any of them was when Yates had escaped. She had mixed feelings about seeing Hank. They arrived at the 21st and went in.
"Olivia, it is so good to see you! It has been way too long."
"Yes, it has. How are things going with you?"
"I was shot a year ago and almost didn't make it. I was helping out during an underground gas explosion and got shot."
"We heard about that on the news. How are you doing?"
"Pretty good actually. I take it you're here to help out with that case?"
"We are."
Trudy got up and walked them upstairs.
"Hey!"
"Hey, man! How are ya?"
"I'm good."
Kevin got up and hugged Fin and Olivia. Adam and Kim did too.
"You're the only ones I recognize."
"Lindsay took a job with the FBI in New York. Olinsky died. Dawson went to rehab for a painkiller addiction several years ago and then joined his sister in Puerto Rico. Halstead left, rejoined the Rangers and is now in Bolivia. Upton left and took a job with the FBI. This is Officer Dante Torres and Officer Kiana Cook. Burgess is now a Detective and she and Ruz got married last spring.
"I did know about Erin, since we have gotten together a few times but it's been a while. Congratulations on both your promotion and your marriage."
"Thanks."
"I was promoted to Captain back in 2019 and Fin is a Sergeant now too."
"Congratulations to you both."
"Thanks."
"Thanks."
"Is your Sergeant here?"
"No. He is actually taking some well-deserved time off, so he left me in charge."
"Ok."
"Did Erin tell you about Hank's son?"
"Yes, she did."
Then Peter came in with the warrant Kim had called him about.
"Olivia."
"Hey, Peter. It is so good to see you."
"You too. How's Noah?"
"He's great. He's growing up a little too quickly for me though. He's a teenager now."
"Oh, boy. Is he still playing baseball?"
"Actually, no. He lost interest in that after you left. He's into dancing now and he is actually quite good at it."
"Good. I'm glad he found something he likes to do. I want to apologize for how I left things."
"I think I was starting to develop feelings for you too but maybe it was because you had really connected with Noah. It's hard to explain."
"I think I understand. Who's your ADA now?"
"Believe it or not, Carisi. He made the move to the DA's office around the same time I was promoted to Captain. He and Rollins finally got together, are now married and have a little boy, Dominick III, who they call Nicky. Carisi loves being a dad to the girls. She left SVU and was teaching at Fordham for about a year. Now she's with the Intelligence Unit as a Sergeant and does a lot of traveling."
"Oh, wow!"
"Did you hear Jack retired?"
"I did. Did you hear Mark passed away?"
"I did not."
"Give Noah my best."
"I will."
"Detective, here's the warrant you wanted."
"Thanks."
Kim took the warrant from Peter and then he left.
"You were involved with Stone?"
"No. He was teaching Noah how to improve his baseball skills and then after he abruptly left after the Rob Miller case, Noah lost interest. He told me his feelings for me were distracting him from doing his job."
"Yet you're still single."
"Thanks for rubbing that in, Fin."
"No problem. I figured you were gonna get with Stabler."
"That was never going to happen. Yes, I care for him but there's too much drama when it comes to him. We agreed to stay friends though."
"Olivia, do you have plans for dinner tonight?"
"Not really."
"Would you like to meet for dinner or something?"
"Sure."
"Great."
Trudy went back downstairs and they started discussing the case. Some of them had gone to look for the suspect. Olivia asked if she could use Hank's office to set up her laptop to contact her squad and they said it was ok. When she went into his office, she put her stuff down on his desk. He had pictures on his desk. One with Al, one with Justin, one of Erin, one of his grandson and one with a younger woman. He looked happy. Was he in a relationship with this woman? She then contacted Renee, who told her things were fine and not to worry. Once they were done talking, Olivia kept going back to the picture of Hank and the woman and she suddenly felt jealous. She and Hank had slept together a couple times and the reason they hadn't spoken since Yates had escaped was because he told her she had feelings for her but she had told him about her and Ed and he was pissed. She started to have feelings for him too but after she and Ed broke up, she decided not to contact Hank. The times she had met with Erin, she never brought him up other than when she told her that Justin had died.
After they did what they could with the case, Fin and Olivia went to check into their hotel and then she met Trudy. When she arrived at the restaurant, she got out of the car and went in. Trudy was already there and had gotten a table. She looked at the menu and then they had their order taken.
"How are you really?"
"I don't know. I guess I'm a little disappointed that Hank isn't around. The last time I was here, he told me he had feelings for me and I told him I was with someone else. He was pissed at me and I don't really blame him. I realized that I had feelings for him too but I figured he needed time to cool off. The times I've seen Erin, she has never mentioned him other than when she told me about Justin. A part of me was hoping we could clear the air between us but I saw the picture on his desk when I was in there. I guess it's a little late for that."
"He's been involved with Nina for about a year now and it's pretty serious. She's met Daniel and Erin and they both really like her. I think she's a little older than Erin but the age difference doesn't bother them. She confessed her feelings to Hank first and then after she left for several months to help out on a federal case, I think that was when he realized he felt something for her too."
"What does she do?"
"She's an Assistant State's Attorney, so she works with Stone. Once they disclosed their relationship, she could no longer handle Intelligence's cases. I knew before most people but he actually brought her to Burgess and Ruzek's wedding, so the rest of the squad found out then. Most of us were hoping the two of you would have gotten together."
"I had mixed feelings about coming here but like I said, I had at least hoped to clear the air between us but that won't happen. Does he ever mention me?"
"Not really. He was pissed after that last time you were here and for a while there, he constantly bitched about it. Once Justin got shot, what had happened with you was the last thing on his mind. Erin left Chicago a year later and a year after that was when Al was killed. I think he told Erin that if she ever saw you, not to mention him to you."
"Other than what happened to Justin, she hasn't mentioned him at all. I don't see her all that much anyway."
"Are you still with that guy?"
"No. We broke up about a year later and really hadn't seen much of each other. I got invited to his retirement party and then when his former partner was accused of rape by a former officer, he helped to take him down. He told me that he had cancer related to 9/11. He said when we first started seeing each other they had found spots on his lungs but he never said anything. It had spread to his brain. He had gotten married about 6 months before he retired and he hadn't told her yet. He ended up taking his own life because he didn't want his wife to have to care for a dying man. He was eventually going to lose his memory. The last thing he said to me was that we would always have Paris. He took Noah and me there the summer of 2016. A little over a year later, my former partner came back to the NYPD after his wife was tragically killed and he admitted he loved me. I couldn't completely forgive him for ghosting me for almost a decade, which he said he deserves. I outgrew him in the time he was gone. I will always care for him and he said the same but we agreed to keeping it platonic. He now knows everything I have been through and said he will be there if I need him for anything. He goes undercover a lot anyway. I just didn't want to mess things up with him if we got romantically involved, which I tend to do sometimes. He's the one I compared Hank to when we first met."
"Ok. What about what you said to Stone?"
"I was actually starting to feel something for him before he left New York and things didn't start off on the right foot for us though. When I was 16, I was seeing this guy in his 20's who was a student of my mom's and he was actually my first. My mom told him to stay away from me and all this time, I thought she was just being a bitch about it. He came back into my life and someone had accused him of being inappropriate with them. All these years later, I realized that I was actually a victim of statutory rape. I was pretty naïve back then and sometimes I still am now. I've had a few casual dates with a lawyer friend of mine, who I've known for close to 25 years and helped me when I adopted Noah."
"Anything promising with that?"
"I don't know."
"Maybe you should ask him out."
"Maybe I will. It's just that sometimes I wonder what could have been with Hank."
"I get it. At one point, I told him to get over it and contact you. He didn't take that too well and I called him a stubborn son of a bitch. I've known him longer than most people especially now that Olinsky is gone."
"Do you like Nina?"
"She's nice but like I said, most of us expected the two of you to end up together. I think you're more his type than someone who works for the State's Attorney's office. He does what he wants anyway."
"Do you think they'll get married?"
"They went to Paris and it's around Valentine's Day, so I think that might be where it's headed."
"When Ed took Noah and me to Paris, I appreciated the gesture but I was really hoping he wasn't planning to propose. I didn't see myself with him long term. He did mean a lot to me though and a part of me was jealous when I found out he was married."
"You'll find the right one. I never expected to find someone but then I attended Chief Boden's wedding and met the love of my life. By the way, Boden is now a Deputy Commissioner, Randall is now a Lieutenant and Herrmann is now a Captain."
"Wow! Congratulations to all of them. Is he in charge of anything?"
"If Lieutenant Kidd isn't around, he is but when she is, he still drives the truck."
"I don't know Lieutenant Kidd."
"There are a lot of people you won't know there. Randall, Herrmann, Severide, Cruz, Capp and Tony are probably the only ones you would know. Do you remember Sylvie Brett?"
"Yes."
"She and Matt Casey got married and are now living in Portland. Do you remember Otis?"
"Yes."
"He died from his injuries in a fire and Randall and I took over his share of Molly's"
"Wow! Is Jay's brother still around?"
"No. He left Chicago several months after Jay did and went to Seattle to be with Dr. Manning and her son. There are a lot of new faces at Med too."
"I didn't even know Upton."
"She started with Intelligence just before Lindsay left and had become Halstead's partner. He dated her and then they eventually got married. She filed for a divorce after he left Chicago for Bolivia."
"Ok. What exactly happened when you were shot or don't you remember?"
"I remember what happened."
Trudy told Olivia what happened with her and then she told her about what happened with Hank when he was shot by his CI and the near death experience he had had."
"Oh, wow!"
Their food arrived and they talked some more. After they ate and Trudy paid the bill, they decided to head to Molly's. When they arrived, they went in and everyone from the fire station was there as usual. When Trudy saw Mouch, she kissed him, ordered their drinks and joined Olivia at the table. The table they were at was the one she had sat at with Hank the first time he had taken her there. Mouch joined them.
"Hey, Olivia."
"Hey, Mouch. It's good to see you."
"You too."
"Congratulations on your promotion."
"Thank you."
Herrmann came out from the back room.
"Hey, Olivia! It's great to see ya."
"You too, Herrmann."
Stella brought the drinks over.
"Here you are, ladies."
"Thanks."
"Thank you."
"Stella Kidd, this is Captain Olivia Benson from Manhattan Special Victims Unit. Olivia, this is Stella Kidd, Lieutenant on Truck 81 and Severide's wife.
"Nice to meet ya, Captain."
"It's nice to meet you too and please call me Olivia."
"I will do that."
Kelly, Joe, Tony and Capp came over.
"Hey, Olivia, it's great to see you."
"It's great to see all of you too."
Then Violet, Novak, Carver and Ritter came over.
"This is the rest of the 51 family. These two are the paramedics, Violet Mikami and Lizzie Novak and these two are Sam Carver and Darrin Ritter, the other firefighters on Truck 81. This is Captain Olivia Benson from the Manhattan Special Victims Unit."
"It's nice to meet all of you."
"You too, Captain Benson."
"Olivia."
Everyone went back to their tables and Olivia, Trudy and Mouch continued talking. Olivia left and went back to her hotel and checked in with Noah before she got ready for bed. The conversations she had had with Trudy about Hank kept going through her head. As much as she had hoped for something to happen between them, that wasn't going to happen and she had to accept that as hard as it was going to be. She ended up crying herself to sleep.
The next day, they worked more on the case but they had found the suspect dead. Later that day, she and Fin went back to New York. Fin knew his boss and long time friend was upset about something but he knew not to pressure her about it. She would talk when she was ready.
The next week went quickly. Hank and Nina enjoyed their time in Paris and had gotten engaged. They decided to stop in New York to tell Erin before heading back to Chicago. Hank made sure she was going to be home. When they arrived in New York, they got their luggage and got the rental before heading to the hotel. They got checked in and then headed over to Erin's. When they arrived, she buzzed them in.
"Hey."
"Hey. Come on in."
"Thanks."
Hank and Nina came in and took their coats off before they sat down.
"So, how was it?"
"Absolutely amazing! Hank proposed."
"Wow! Congratulations!"
"Thanks."
"Thanks, kid."
Erin hugged both of them.
"I heard from Burgess. She said they had a case that involved SVU and Liv and Fin went to Chicago while you were gone. She was asking about you and I guess Platt told her about you and Nina."
"I don't really care what Olivia Benson thinks. She's the one that broke my heart when I told her I had feelings for her and she responds by tellin' me she was with someone else but we could always be friends. Did I hear from her in 10 years? No. Friends don't do that."
"It works both ways. You didn't keep in touch with her either."
"And I don't care if I ever see or hear from her again. I'm happy with the way things turned out."
"Nice attitude, Hank!"
Hank got up and went to the bathroom.
"She meant a lot to him, didn't she?"
"I think she did since she's the first woman he started to open his heart to since Camille but sometimes it's hard to say with him. He's not very good with communicating his feelings."
"I have noticed that. He has talked about her quite a bit."
"That I did not know. I don't think she intentionally meant to hurt him. I just think she was a little surprised by the admission."
"Kind of like he was when I admitted that I had feelings for him."
"Yeah. I get long distance would have been difficult but I think they are both equally to blame for what happened. They did sleep together a few times."
"I knew about that. He has opened up to me about a lot. I think that was part of the reason he was hesitant about admitting his feelings for me at first. I know he still loves Camille and I think he does care what Olivia thinks."
"Honestly, I think he does too."
Hank came out of the bathroom.
"Do you two wanna grab dinner somewhere?"
"Sure."
"Yeah, sure."
They all put their coats on and went out to the car. Hank drove to a restaurant and then they went in. He told them how many there were and then they got their table. Little did they know was that Olivia was there with Noah, Fin, Phoebe, Amanda, Sonny and the kids but they were a little further back. Olivia had just told them about her conversation with Trudy.
"Liv, that sucks! I thought you and Voight felt somethin' for each other especially after the Yates trial."
"So did I. That was the last time we had slept together though."
"What about Stabler now that things won't happen with Voight?"
"I would much rather have a platonic relationship with him and he understands that. He's gone so much anyway and he's dealing with a lot with his mom too. His older brother is around, so he does what he can with her. We finally talked about certain things that I have been through. When he first came back, I told him that I dated someone named Ed but didn't say who specifically. I finally told him about it and he was shocked to hear that after everything he had put us through but he understands that I saw a different side to Ed. He said he had heard about Ed's death and that really surprised him."
"What did he say about Lewis?"
"He said it would not have gotten as far as it did if he had been around and I don't doubt that for a second. Hank once told me that too. It is what it is."
"You'll find someone to make you happy. Maybe it'll happen when you least expect it to."
"Mom, you should totally date Trevor Langan. I can tell he likes you a lot."
"It's not like that hasn't crossed my mind but I don't know. I tend to ruin things when I become romantically involved with someone."
"Yeah but Mom, you deserve to be happy."
"Thanks, Sweetie. I know how much you've missed out on by not having a dad."
"There are a lot of kids who are raised by single parents. Look at Aunt Amanda. She pretty much raised Jesse and Billie by herself but now she has Uncle Sonny."
"That's a good point. You're growing up too fast for me."
"I can't help that."
They all got their food and ate. Olivia was feeling a lot better by spending time with the people she knew cared about her. She honestly didn't care if she ever saw Hank Voight again. After they ate, Sonny paid the bill and then they all left. They walked past where Hank, Nina and Erin were sitting. Erin was facing towards the back, so she saw them.
"Liv, hey."
"Hey, Erin."
"Olivia."
"Sergeant Voight. This must be Nina."
"It is."
"How was Paris?"
"Great. We had a great time. You'd like it there."
"I've been there before but how would you know what I would like?"
"Is there some reason why you're being such a bitch? I don't recall you callin' me at all in the last 10 years especially after I lost my son and my best friend. Who's the one that said we would always be friends?"
"You agreed to the friend thing as much as I did. I didn't know about Justin until after Erin moved here and she did tell me about Al but maybe I would have rather heard about both of from you. You were the one whose ego was hurt when I told you I was in a relationship with someone else.
"I admit I was jealous when you first told me but that's the way you're actin' now."
"Please. I was over you a long time ago. Whatever that was between us meant nothing to me."
"I didn't call you because I wasn't dealing with either one. Unless you've lost someone you've cared about, you have no idea."
"I have lost people I cared about. I lost my Sergeant around the same time you lost Justin and if I could have, I would have switched places with him. Ed and I broke up about a year after we started seeing each other and hadn't seen each other for 3 years. I was invited to his retirement party where I found out he had recently gotten married. He later told me that he had brain cancer and was given 6 months to a year but he had never told his wife. He ended up taking his own life because he didn't want his wife to take care of a dying man. I lost my mother 20-some years ago and even though there were times when we weren't that close, I still loved her. My half-brother came back into my life after maybe 5 years and swore to me that he was clean and sober. We were supposed to meet for lunch and when he didn't show up, I was upset and left him a message to never contact me again. Later I got a call from the ME's office and she had Simon on the slab and I was the next of kin. He died of a drug overdose and I blamed myself for it because I thought he had heard my message. It turned out that someone had given him heroin laced with fentanyl. I still cared about him even though we weren't that close. My former partner and his wife were back in the area after being in Rome for 4 years and she was seriously injured when their rental exploded. She later died from her injuries. Yeah, I have no idea what you're going through. Not that you really care about what I've been through. I need to go."
Olivia caught up to everyone else and then they all left to head home.
"I think you two need to clear the air between you."
"Why?"
"As someone who is new to the situation, it sounds like you were the childish one with what happened when she told you that she was with someone else at that time."
"I admitted I was jealous but she outright denied it."
"You obviously know nothing about women's feelings. How did you stay married to Camille as long as you did?"
"He's always been clueless."
"I'll think about it."
"Why do you have to be so difficult?"
"He's always been that way and it comes naturally to him."
Hank gave Erin a look.
"Ha, ha. Smart ass."
"I'm not trying to be funny."
They finished eating and after Hank paid the bill, they took Erin home. He and Nina went back to their hotel, made love and fell asleep.
The next morning, Olivia got up and made sure Noah was up before she went to take a shower. Once she was done in the shower, she went to fix breakfast. She was hurt by the conversation she had had with Hank the night before and she was jealous. She still cared for him but she would never tell him that. Once Noah was out of the shower, they had breakfast and then she took him to school before she headed to the Precinct. By the time she got there, the rest of the squad was already out working on a case.
Hank hadn't gotten much sleep. Nina was right and sometimes he hated that. He needed to clear the air with Olivia. He kissed Nina on the forehead and got up to take a shower. By the time he got out of the shower, Nina was awake.
"Morning."
"Hey. I think I'm gonna go talk to Olivia. You were right."
"Aren't I always?"
"Smart ass!"
"Isn't that why you love me?"
"For one thing, you can put me in my place and get away with it. That's something you have in common with Olivia besides the fact that you're both bossy."
"Do you want me to go with you?"
"No. I gotta do this on my own."
"Ok. I love you."
"Love you too."
Hank kissed Nina and then he headed to the Precinct. He stopped to grab coffee on the way. When he arrived at the Precinct, he went up. No one was in the squadroom but he saw Olivia in her office. He walked across the squad room towards her office and knocked on the doorframe.
"Hey. Come on in."
"Thanks."
Hank came in and handed her the coffee.
"Thanks."
Hank saw her nameplate.
"So, Captain now, huh?"
"Yep. More headaches."
"How long has that been?"
"Since right after Peter left New York. Carisi is now the ADA and handles things quite well. Judge Barth, who was the judge for the Yates' trial, stepped down from the bench and is now a Defense Attorney. He won his first case against her and he also won a case against Barba, who's also now a Defense Attorney. He and Rollins are now married and have a son. He loves her girls too and he's more of a dad to them than the actual fathers are."
"You're ok with them workin' together?"
"Actually, she left SVU right around the time they got married but I was fine with it before she left. She was teaching at Fordham for a while but now she's running our Intelligence Unit, which is actually different than yours is and she is also now a Sergeant. She does quite a bit of traveling, so Carisi takes care of the kids."
"That's great. I wanted to apologize for last night and for the last 10 years. I was hurt when you told me about you and that IAB guy."
"I'm sorry too. I won't deny I had feelings for you too because I did and still do. You seem happy now and Nina seems nice from what I could tell."
"She's a lot like you in someways though. She puts me in my place and gets away with it like you always did. She's also a bit on the bossy side."
"At least you disclosed. I normally don't and it usually comes back to bite me in the ass because someone finds out."
"I didn't want to but we both knew it would mean that we couldn't work together anymore. My squad didn't find out until I took her to Burgess and Ruzek's wedding."
"I see they're still working together."
"They are."
"Burgess was still on Patrol the last time I saw you."
"She came up after that. She was in Intelligence when Erin left but she took time off when her sister was sexually assaulted. She moved up there when Antonio went to work for Stone at the State's Attorney's office. He came back to Intelligence when Stone came here and Erin left for the FBI."
"I'm sorry to hear about Al."
"Thanks. It's been rough. Some days my heart isn't in it since he's been gone. Almost two years ago I had I near death experience and I saw Al. He told me that there is still more to do and it wasn't my time yet. He was one of the few people besides Erin who knew how I really felt about you and he had told me before he died that I shouldn't give up on us bein' together. Nina was around when I was found. A few months later, she helped me with a case and told me she would be gone helpin' with a federal case in Denver. She then admitted that she had feelings for me and told me I couldn't dictate how she felt. I'm not exactly sure when I realized I cared about her too but when she came back, we started at relationship. A year later, we're engaged."
"Congratulations!"
"Thanks. I didn't wanna leave things the way we did. I do want to be friends."
"I think we can. When are you heading back to Chicago?"
"We have a flight late this afternoon and back to work tomorrow."
"Would you two like to meet me for lunch?"
"You're not out in the field anymore?"
"I'm trying to cut back but it doesn't always work out that way. Fin is a Sergeant and capable of handling things and I also have another Captain helping out as well. She is also capable of handling things."
"Lunch sounds like a plan but I will check with Nina and let you know for sure."
"Ok."
Hank got up to leave and headed back to the hotel. When he got back, Nina had already been in the shower and was dressed.
"How'd it go?"
"Better than I expected. She said she did have feelings for me too. She invited us to lunch. I said I would check with you and let her know."
"That's fine. I'd like to get to know her too."
"Ok."
Hank texted Olivia and said they would pick her up. She replied back telling that was fine and what time. Nina ordered something light for breakfast from room service and then they stayed there until they had to go pick Olivia up. When they arrived at the Precinct, Hank got out of the car and went to open the door for Nina. She got out and took Hank's hand before they went inside. They went up to SVU. This time the rest of the squad was there.
"Hey, Voight."
"Hey, Fin. This is my fiancé Nina Chapman. Nina, this is Fin Tutuola."
"Hi. It's nice to meet you."
"You too. This is Joe Velasco, Terry Bruno, Kate Silva and Renee Curry. This is Sergeant Hank Voight from Chicago."
"Nice to meet you, Sergeant."
"You too. This is Nina."
Olivia came out of her office with Carisi.
"Give me a few minutes. I need to run to the washroom."
"Yeah, sure."
Olivia headed to the washroom.
"Hey, Sarge, it's good to see you."
"You too. This is my fiancé Nina Chapman, who's one of the Assistant State's Attorneys."
"Nice to meet you. I'm Dominick Carisi, Jr., the Assistant District Attorney. I used to be an SVU Detective."
"Nice to meet you too. How long have you been the ADA?"
"I became the ADA after Stone left and went back to Chicago. I took and passed the Bar exam a few years prior to that but at the time, I still wanted to be a cop. I was startin' to have feelings for one of my co-workers, so that was one of the reasons I switched. She wasn't too happy with me for leavin' but at least we were still workin' together. We finally got together in the spring of 2021 and got married in December of 2023. We now have a 2-year old son and I'm mostly the dad of her 2 daughters. Amanda left SVU right after we got married and was teachin' at Fordham but decided she didn't like it, so now she's runnin' NYPD's Intelligence Unit. She travels a lot but I'm happy she's happy."
"Wow! I started working with Hank's unit a few years ago and we didn't start out on the right foot."
Olivia had come back and heard that part.
"Then it's not just me. I had to threaten to arrest him when we first met."
"He did tell me about that."
Olivia went to get her coat and purse, while Nina finished her story. After she was done, Carisi left and then Hank, Nina and Olivia left for lunch. Olivia picked the place and told Hank how to get there. When they arrived, they went in and were taken to their table. Their server came to take their order and then went to put it in.
"Was that Noah with you last night?"
"Yeah. He's a teenager now."
"How'd that happen?"
"No kidding."
"My grandson will be 11."
"That doesn't seem possible either. I remember how excited you were about becoming a grandpa. Is he nearby?"
"Unfortunately, no. Olive's sister is in Scottsdale, Arizona, so she took him out there to be closer to her. She brings him to see me when he's off for the summer, so they usually come for maybe a week then and when he's off for Christmas. If Erin's around, she'll come in when they're visitin' in the summer and then she spends the holidays with the family. Erin and I usually go out there for Thanksgiving but last year, Nina wanted to have Thanksgiving for my family, so Olive and Daniel came in and so did Erin."
"I figured that would be a good time to introduce Hank to my parents but that did not go well at all. I will definitely not be telling them we're now engaged. However, I have never had the best relationship with my parents anyway."
"Been there done that. I was the product of my mother's rape and never knew my father. He was apparently more active in my half-brother's life than he was mine. My mother blamed me for everything but I do what I do because of what happened to her. The police never followed through on her case, so I wanted to make sure victims like her got the justice they deserve."
"That's understandable and very admirable."
"I apologized to Hank earlier but I feel like I owe you an apology as well. I was just as hurt as he was by what had happened between us and like I told him, I did have feelings for him.
"Don't worry about it. I told Hank that he obviously acted immaturely with what happened between the two of you."
"I've never been good in relationships and I tend to ruin things after I sleep with them. My former partner, the one I compared Hank to when we first met, lost his wife and admitted to me that he had feelings for me. I basically told him that didn't want to cross that line with him because I was afraid of what it might do to our friendship. He left for about a decade and then came back but I still can't completely forgive him for that. He said he doesn't blame me. It's not that I don't want to be in a relationship but a part of me thinks I'm afraid to make a commitment to someone. I'm barely around for my son sometimes. A lawyer friend of mine and I have gone out on a few casual dates but again, I'm afraid of what might happen if he and I sleep together. He's the lawyer that helped me with the adoption. My son likes him. I let the one I really wanted get away."
"Tucker?"
"No, that would be you. I was a little disappointed that you weren't in Chicago when I was there and I did use your office to video chat with my squad."
"That's fine. I don't know how long you expected me to wait for you to make a decision though. If you and Tucker broke up about a year after you got together, you could have contacted me."
"You could have contacted me too."
"How was I supposed to know you were no longer in a relationship? Then you basically saai that what happened between us meant nothin' to you anyway."
"I lied about that. The couple times I was with you was probably the most satisfied I have ever been with a man. I just didn't think I could handle being in a long distance relationship when I can't even handle being in a relationship with someone in the same city.
"Even after what had happened the last time you were in Chicago when Yates escaped, my feelings for you never changed. In fact, that may have played a part in why I wasn't sure how I felt about Nina. She was there for me a lot these last couple years and besides Trudy, Olive and Erin, she has become one of the few people I can confide in and not feel like I'm bein' judged. I used to feel that way about you because we talk all the time and complain about our jobs but I felt betrayed by you when you told me you were involved with someone from Internal Affairs. Before all that happened, I had done a lot of thinkin' and I would have left Chicago for you in a heartbeat. Everything changed, I've moved on and for the first time in a long time, I'm truly happy. I suggest you do the same."
"Everyone always ends up leaving, so it's not surprising. Even Peter Stone, who I couldn't stand when I first met. He admitted he felt something for me and then he left. I'm obviously the problem, so I'm better off being alone anyway."
Their food arrived and they were quiet as they ate. After they were done, Olivia paid the bill and decided to walk back to the Precinct. She had made a complete fool of herself and she felt awkward. Hank and Nina went back to the hotel and got their things together before they headed to the airport. Olivia got back to the Precinct and went up.
"How was lunch?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
Olivia went into her office and made a call to Dr. Lindstrom to see how soon she could get an appointment. She was able to get one after work. She texted Noah to let him know that she had an appointment after work, so he needed to either get a ride home from dance class or he could head home on his own. The rest of the day went by quickly. Noah texted her back and asked if he could go over to his friend's for dinner and she said it was fine but to make sure he got his homework done. Hank and Nina's flight took off and Olivia and her squad were actually getting out on time. Fin was the last one to leave.
"You wanna talk about it? Did you and Voight get into it again?"
"He said something that kind of upset me but in a way, I know he was right. He said he has moved on and he suggested I do the same. I don't know why I even invited them to lunch. I felt awkward."
"She seems nice though."
"She does. There is still a part of me that wishes I was the one with him. I have to go. I have an appointment with Dr. Lindstrom."
"Back to that again, huh?"
"Yeah."
Olivia got her coat and the rest of her stuff and headed out. Fin left too. Olivia drove to Dr. Lindstrom's office and while she was waiting, Trevor had texted her and wanted to know if she was available for dinner. She texted him back and said she was at an appointment but she would call him when she was done. He agreed and then Dr. Lindstrom came out. She went into his office and thanked him for being able to see her at the last minute. They talked, so she could get what she needed to off her chest. When she was done, they scheduled another session and then she left. She called Trevor and invited him to come for dinner even though she had no idea what to make. He said he'd pick up Chinese and bring it over. He wanted to know if Noah was home and she said no. He was having dinner at a friend's house. She told Trevor what she wanted and then she headed home. Trevor called to order the food and then he went to pick it up before he went over to Olivia's. They had dinner together and talked but mostly Trevor let Olivia talk while he listened. She told him she hated that everyone always ended up leaving and he assured her that he wouldn't. He admitted to her that he had had feelings for her for a while and wanted to asked her out but he wasn't sure he should. She told him that she tends to ruin things when her relationships start to get serious and she didn't want to ruin their friendship just like she did with mostly everyone else. That was pretty much the reason she didn't want to get into a relationship with Elliot. Trevor assured her that he wouldn't let her ruin things and they could take things as slowly as she wanted. They agreed to start a real relationship. Trevor had still been there when Noah got home, so Olivia told him that she and Trevor were going to start a relationship. He was glad. Noah went to finish his homework and then after a while, Trevor had gone home.
Once Hank and Nina got home, Hank dropped her off and went home. He called Olive and Daniel, so he could tell them he and Nina were engaged. They were both happy for them. After he hung up, he texted Nina to let her know that Olive and Daniel were happy about their news. He then went to bed. The next day in Chicago, Hank and Nina had both returned to work and Hank told his squad that he and Nina were engaged. They were all happy for him. In New York, Olivia texted Erin to apologize for her behavior when she ran into them at the restaurant. She said they were fine. They agreed to get together more often when Erin's schedule permitted.
The next several months went quickly. Nina found out she was pregnant, so they decided to have a wedding with just Hank's family when everyone was in Chicago after Daniel got out of school. Neither of them really wanted to make a big fuss about their wedding anyway but they agreed to have a party to celebrate with everyone at a later time. Nina said she wasn't sure she wanted to live where he made his memories with Camille, so he decided to sell his house and move into her place since she had more room in her condo than he did in his house.
The summer arrived quickly. Olivia and Trevor had gotten close and were still going strong after 4 months. Noah had gotten out of school and Trevor had taken him and Olivia to Hawaii. Their time there was ending on Sunday. By the time Daniel had gotten out of school, he, Olive, her boyfriend David and his son Kevin, who was a friend of Daniel's, along with Erin and her boyfriend Rick had come to Chicago. By the end of that week, Hank and Nina got married by one of the Judges and they were planning to go to Hawaii for their honeymoon, while everyone else was headed back to Phoenix or New York. Hank and Nina were staying at the same hotel that Olivia, Trevor and Noah were. When Hank and Nina arrived on Saturday afternoon, they got checked into the hotel and went up to their suite. They made love and then they decided to go to the pool. Olivia, Trevor and Noah were at the pool when they came down.
"Unbelievable."
"What?"
"That's Hank Voight."
"You sure?"
"Yep."
Hank and Nina walked over to them.
"You followin' us, Olivia?"
"I don't think so. We've been here for a week. What brings you here?"
"We're on our honeymoon."
"That's great."
Nina had her hand on her belly.
"This is Trevor Langan and this is my son Noah. This is Hank Voight and his wife Nina."
Olivia was rolling her eyes under her sunglasses and she didn't think anyone saw it but Trevor had.
"It's nice to meet you both."
"You too."
"Yeah, you too."
"Sweetie, why don't we grab those chairs over there?"
"Sounds like a plan. Good to see you, Olivia and again, it was nice meetin' both of you."
Nina and Hank went to grab the two chairs they had seen.
"Olivia, you ok?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
"You were rolling your eyes under your sunglasses."
"You saw that?"
"I did."
"I was rolling my eyes because she was so obviously pregnant."
"So, what? Are you still jealous?"
"I don't know, maybe."
"Don't get so worked up about it. I brought you here to get you to relax."
"And I love you for it."
"I love you too."
Trevor leaned over and kissed Olivia.
"I wanna go back into the pool."
"Ok."
Noah got up and did a cannonball into the water. Olivia and Trevor joined him in the water. Hank was also in the water but so far, Nina was just sitting on the side of the pool with her feet in the water. Olivia and Trevor swam over to where they were.
"How are things going in Chicago?"
"Same crap, different day."
"I know how that goes."
"Trevor, you're the lawyer, right?"
"Right. I used to be a Defense Attorney, which is how Olivia and I met but of course we never got along. Now I deal with bringing families together. We've known each other how long?"
"Close to 25 years. I've come a long way from saying that I don't date lawyers."
"I never had much use for lawyers either until this feisty Assistant State's Attorney came into my life."
"Thanks, Sweetie."
Hank gave Nina a kiss as Trevor wrapped his arms around Olivia and kissed her neck.
"Babe, are you comin' in the water?"
"Maybe. I don't want to overdo it."
"How far along are you?"
"About 18 weeks. Is it that obvious? We haven't said anything to anyone but his family yet."
"Your hand on your belly gave it away. My friend Amanda does that when she's pregnant."
"It happened when we were in Paris."
"Congratulations!"
"Thanks."
"Is everything ok?"
"So far. I had an amnio done and we will probably find out at my next appointment what it is. Hank isn't sure he wants to know but I want to."
"Hank, you're no fun."
"I've been told that."
Hank gave Nina a funny look and Noah swam up to them.
"Mom, can we move here?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"It's very expensive."
"That sucks. I love it here."
"I do too but maybe Trevor will bring us back another time."
"Sure, we can do that."
"Awesome!"
"Hank and Nina know someone we know."
"Who's that?"
"Peter."
"Really?"
"Yep. Nina works with Peter and he handles the cases for Hank's unit."
"You did tell me you saw him the last time you were in Chicago."
"I've worked on cases with Hank's unit, so that's how I know Hank."
"Oh, ok."
"How long are you here?"
"We got her a week ago and we leave tomorrow morning. It's such a long flight."
"It was for us too."
They talked a little while longer and then Noah went back to swimming. Nina came into the water and swam around for a while. Olivia, Trevor and Noah went back to their suite for a while and decided what they wanted to do for dinner. Hank and Nina decided to have dinner in their suite and after Olivia, Trevor and Noah had dinner, they went to the beach, so they could spend more time there before they left in the morning. Once they got back to their suite, everyone took their showers and then Noah went in his room, while Trevor and Olivia made love before they went to sleep. Hank and Nina made love as well.
Early the next morning, Olivia, Trevor and Noah got up and got dressed. They went to the hotel restaurant to have breakfast before they checked out and headed to the airport. They got checked in and went to the gate to wait for their flight. A couple hours later, the flight took off for New York. Hank and Nina got up and decided to have breakfast on the terrace. They made love and then they got ready. They went for a walk hand in hand along the beach and in the water. They had lunch and enjoyed the beautiful weather.
After flying for what seemed like forever, the flight from Honolulu landed in New York. They got off the plane and went to get their luggage. Trevor drove them home and helped them upstairs. After he kissed Olivia and she and Noah thanked him for the trip, he headed home. Olivia and Noah unpacked but most of it was put in the laundry. Olivia was too tired to do the laundry, so she would do it another night. The last person she was expecting to run into in Hawaii was Hank. She loved Trevor but she still wondered that could have been if she and Hank had decided to get into a relationship. Maybe she would be his wife right now. She needed to get that out of her head and concentrate on her present and future, both of which hopefully included Trevor. They were at a good place in their relationship right now. She went to check on Noah, who was sound asleep.
The week went by quickly. Hank and Nina had spent time seeing some of the sights and spent time at either the beach or the pool when they weren't in their suite making love. They had even felt the baby moving in Nina's belly. The morning they were leaving for Chicago, they grabbed a quick breakfast and checked out before heading to the airport.
At Nina's next appointment after they got back, they found out they were having a healthy daughter. Nina decided how she wanted the nursery decorated and Erin, Olive, Trudy, Kim and some of the other women planned a baby shower for her. They had invited Olivia but she wasn't able to be there. She did send a gift. The baby was due the week before Thanksgiving, so Hank had already informed Olive that they would not be coming to Scottsdale but Olive suggested they all come to Chicago and she would cook there, so he and Nina could focus on the baby. They agreed to that as did Erin.
Nina gave birth to Katelyn Marie a week early but everything went well with the delivery and they were both able to go home in a couple days. The weekend before Thanksgiving, Olive, Daniel, David, Kevin, Erin and Rick all came to Chicago and stayed at a hotel but were looking forward to meeting Baby Katelyn. Erin loved seeing Hank with his new daughter and Daniel loved meeting his new aunt. They all enjoyed the next week together and the day after Thanksgiving, they all helped Hank and Nina decorate the condo for Christmas. They discussed Christmas and Erin wanted to have it, so they all were planning to head there. Hank had thought about introducing Katelyn to Olivia but he wasn't sure that was such a good idea. He never thought he would have found love again and he certainly never thought he'd be a dad again. He was also glad that Erin and Olive found happiness again. Life couldn't be any better than it was now for him and he loved every minute of it.
Trevor took Olivia and Noah to Buffalo for Christmas to meet his parents and things had gone well. Olivia knew things were getting more serious between her and Trevor, since no one else had ever introduced her to their family before. She didn't mind. He was also the only man that spoiled her and he love Noah as much as he loved her. She loved the gift Trevor had given her for Christmas: a Caribbean cruise for Valentine's Day and he said Noah would be staying with Amanda, Sonny and the kids while they were gone.
Not too long before the cruise, Trevor had a talk with Noah and told him that he wanted to propose to Olivia. Noah was excited about that and even helped Trevor pick out her engagement ring. Trevor also asked him if he could be his dad and he of course wanted that as much as he wanted his mom to be happy.
The cruise had been memorable for Trevor and Olivia. He proposed and she immediately said yes. He told her he had already asked Noah if he could be his dad and he answered just as quickly as she did. Olivia had never gotten this far in a relationship before. Trevor told her she could have whatever kind of wedding she wanted and not to worry about how much anything cost. He had also asked Olivia if she and Noah would move in with him. She said she would ask Noah and let him know. This is the life she could have only dreamed of having and she never thought any of this would have been possible with anyone else. This was the happy ending she knew she deserved.
