Chapter 9 – Silence Before the Fall
The week passed with no new tower activations.
Classes resumed. Club meetings returned. And for a moment, Kadic Academy felt like… school.
In the art room, Zaynah worked alone near the window. Her tablet sketched blueprints and fractal patterns—nothing for class, just motion to quiet her thoughts.
A light tap startled her.
Kekoa stood beside her with a bowl of fruit. "Traded an extra breakfast to sneak this out."
She blinked.
"…Why?"
He smiled. "You forget to eat when you think too hard."
She stared at him for a moment. Then took a slice of melon.
"…Thanks."
He didn't sit right away. Just leaned on the edge of the table, letting the golden afternoon sun spill across them both.
"I like this room," he said. "It's like… silence, but the good kind."
She didn't respond immediately.
Then, softly, "Most silence isn't good for me."
Kekoa turned to her.
"I'm glad you're here now," he said. "With us. I don't need you to be louder… just real."
Zaynah lowered her stylus. For the first time, her walls didn't feel like armor. They felt… optional.
Later – Rooftop Garden
Ubel sat with Kite, looking up at the clouds.
Kite munched on a protein bar while reviewing mission data. Ubel was quiet, fidgeting with a screwdriver, working on a tiny hover-drone that kept misfiring.
"You ever think about how weird this is?" Ubel asked.
Kite glanced at him. "All of it?"
"No, just… being alive after seeing what we've seen."
Kite leaned back. "Every day."
Ubel nodded, his voice quieter. "Sometimes I feel like Cipher kept me safe. Like he made the decisions I couldn't."
Kite looked at him with soft eyes.
"You're the one keeping him safe now."
The drone beeped—and hovered, stable.
Ubel blinked.
"…Huh."
Midnight – Outside the School
Rain pattered against the glass.
Haseo stood beneath the archway, hoodie up, scanning the dorms from a distance. He didn't sleep much. Never had.
Footsteps approached.
It was Yumi.
"You're watching again," she said, voice gentle.
"Someone has to."
She stood beside him. For a long time, they just watched the rain fall.
"Do you think we'll win?" she asked.
Haseo didn't answer immediately.
"…I think we'll survive."
Then the wind changed.
The air felt charged.
And from the tallest branch of the nearby oak… a single drop of data static fell like rain.
