Invulnerable: Chapter Ten

Luke

She did not sleep at all. Her husband had killed the most powerful group of people on the planet. Why? She kept asking to herself. His excuses didn't matter to her, just the thought of her hero of a husband, that she loved for 20 years, that he could turn face in the blink of an eye.

Debbie was sitting on the counter where her husband left her with the bombshell, "In time you will understand" What did all this mean? She looked around the room at a broken wine glass on the ground she dropped night before. She didn't have the stomach to move or do anything.

What would Mark think? She questioned. On how she was gonna tell her beloved son. What would his reaction be? That is what she had been thinking of this whole time since the her husband left.

"Hey Mrs. Grayson."

She whipped around quickly to find Perseus just coming into the door, backpack on and a blue tshirt. She didn't hear the door open, I must be lost in my mind. Percy smiled at her as he closed the door.

"Where's Mark at, Percy?" Debbie said nervously.

"He is over at Amber's something about telling her that he is Invincible." Percy said as he walked into the kitchen.

Debbie saw him look down at the floor and at the broken wine glass, she saw his eyes soften, as he picked it up, with the loose pieces, and threw them away in the trash can. Using his water powers, the wine on the floor floated up and into the sink. Wow still not used to that.

Percy sat down in front of Debbie, he knew this conversation would come and getting right into as usual, a blue portal opened and out came the bloody suit of Nolan that he made disappear a few days prior.

He heard her squeak as she tried to look away, "Mrs. Grayson what happened? why were you hiding this suit?"

"I uh." She squeezed out, should she tell him he was Mark's best friend and had abilities to rival anyone except maybe her husband. He seemed kind, generous, and caring. He was always respectful and stayed that way but right now with her husband turning face. Her trust issues were low. "I don't know Percy." She said quietly.

"Mrs. Grayson, I have an ability to know when people lie, so please be open with me and I will do everything in my power to help you." Percy said as he watched her eyes dart around looking for any intruders.

"I don't know if I can talk about this here people are listening." Debbie said.

"People? what people?" Percy asked, also looking.

"The government people they think I don't know but I do to keep an eye on my husband and Mark." Debbie whispered to him.

Percy hummed, "well let's change that." His hand started glowing a distinct white energy as he thought of a rune and slapped it on the table. Instantly carved into the marble was a no listening rune.

Debbie shocked and gasped, "what did you do to my counter?"

"It is a rune Mrs. Grayson only those present can listen." Percy said as he traced the runed crown of Hera with a finger. "I can lift it after we are done if you want or it can stay forever." As he shrugged and summoned himself and Debbie a glass of water to sip on.

Taking her drink in shaky hands, "Okay, I will tell you but promise me you won't tell Mark or Cecil."

Percy narrowed his eyes at her, "Hmmm I promise I won't tell them unless you give me permission to do so."

Debbie sighed as she took a look around the home again, this is do or die. "I believe Nolan killed the Guardians of the Globe." She let out in relief it felt like a great burden was released from her shoulders. She looked at Percy and his eyes softned in sympathy like he knew it was true.

"Why do you think so Mrs. Grayson?."

"The suit for one, evidence by this demon detective Damian Darkblood al-" she stopped as Percy raised his hand.

"Thats what that sense I had. A creature of the underworld was here, he left a trace, I would like to meet this Darkblood." He gestured for her to continue.

Underworld how could he? Why do I even bother? She cleared her throat, "Anyway the detective came to me with accusations and truths that Nolan had killed them. Nolan was the only one to survive the encounter and the capability to actually see it through. So, I snooped around the house with Nolan gone and I found that." She pointed to the bloody suit.

Percy fidgeted with the water glass, "I understand Mrs. Grayson what you are going through, I could never comprehend it though. So, do you believe he did it?" He gently asked.

"Yes and No, he's the love of my life I thought I knew everything about him. But, this I could scarcely believe. The father of my son, a hero to the world. I just couldn't believe it and I tried to until Nolan told me that he did. I feel betrayed." She started crying as her heart broke.

Percy got up and sat next to her, "Mrs. Grayson-."

"Please call me Debbie." She said between tears.

Percy sighed, "Alright, Debbie I was once betrayed by a friend, a great friend who taught me to be more than I was. He taught me to fight and to believe in friendship. I trusted him so much that when he betrayed us, it broke us. So I understand where you are coming from Debbie. Sometimes those closest to us betray us or hurt us, that is hard to come back from. I don't know Nolan that well but he seemed like he cared for you and Mark. Something isn't right I know that much. Maybe its because he was always evil or maybe its because he was forced to do it. Or something else entirely." Percy said as he put a hand on Debbie and using his power of the Hearth to give her a sense of calm. "My friend became the hero in the end because his oldest friend still believed there was good in him, something I never thought would be possible. She never gave up on him. Something I regret to this day, if I only believed in him he maybe would've lived. Believe in Nolan, Debbie believe there is good inside him." Percy finished as he took a drink.

Believe in Nolan that there is a good side to him? Not all the 20 years were fake right? There were moments when Nolan was, is a great father. Debbie said as she also drank from her water.

"How do I know he is evil or someone made him do it.?" Debbie asked the wise boy.

"It's a leap of faith, Debbie you don't know if you don't try." Percy replied.

"What was your friend's name, Percy the one that became a hero?" Debbie asked curious to know more about Percy's past. She saw him look up with a smile, like he was remembering something fondly.

"His name was Luke. The best man I have ever known." Percy answered.

"Maybe Nolan can be like Luke, to be the hero." She smiled for the first time in awhile. Believe in him.

She stopped crying as she felt a little bit better, "But, what would Mark think that his father murdered a team of good people?"

Percy shrugged, "He is his own man but from what I can see he doesn't give up on family."

"You're right Percy let's hope so." Debbie said as she stared at her glass.

They both sat in silence reminiscing about their words enjoying each others company.

A soft knock echoed from the front door. They both looked at each other curiously.

Percy got up, " I got it don't worry." As he walked to the front door as a plump man in a suit and glasses was there stonefaced. Percy saw him briefly in the Pentagon.

"Hello Perseus, is everything alright?"

"Yes why wouldn't it be?" Percy curious as he looked over the shorter man's shoulder all he saw was a house, nothing in the street to acknowledge how the man got there. Cecil's transporter Percy assumed.

"Uh we lost contact and we just wanted to make sure the Grayson's were alright."

Donald brought a finger to his ear like he was hearing something in his ear. But, Percy could of course hear it.

"Donald we need to bring in Debbie." Said the gruff voice of Cecil.

"Acknowledged Sir." Donald brought his hand down.

"So, what do you want with Mrs. Grayson?" Percy said as he heard the footsteps of the woman walk towards the door.

"It is just standard procedure Perseus nothing to worry about." Said Donald as the man looked towards Debbie.

"What is this about Donald? I don't want to go anywhere, not now." Debbie said as she crossed her arms.

Percy saw and heard the plump man sigh, "Mrs. Grayson it is in your best interest to come with us, please" as his eyes darted around nervously.

Debbie looked to Percy.

"It is up to you Debbie, but I highly doubt it is anything bad, it might be because of Nolan or Mark."

She nodded her head slowly, "Let's hope not." Turning back towards Donald. "Okay I will go." As she walked back inside to grab her purse.

"What is really going on Donald." Percy said as he crossed his arms.

Donald smiled, "it isn't bad just Cecil wants to talk with her preferably alone."

"You know, I can tell when a person is lying." Percy replied as Donald stiffened.

Debbie walked back to the front door, "Okay I am all set, ready?"

"Yes Mrs. Grayson." Donald said quickly.

Percy held the door for them both as Debbie walked out he grabbed her arm, "Remember the story of Luke, your husband their is good inside him, find it." He whispered in her ear and let her arm go.

Percy watched as they both disappeared in a beam of white particles. What is going on? He thought as he closed the door.
