New in Middleton
Chapter 1: New Roads, Old Bonds
The sun beat down on Middleton as a white convertible pulled into the school parking lot, music thumping from the speakers. At the wheel was Bonnie Rockwaller, the kind of girl who turned heads on instinct—tanned skin glowing, teal eyes shielded behind pink-tinted sunglasses, and her signature pink crop top and matching skirt catching every glint of sunlight. Her nails tapped rhythmically on the steering wheel, perfectly manicured.
In the passenger seat, Ron Stoppable munched on a breakfast burrito, completely unfazed by the attention they were getting. His messy blonde hair stuck out from under a backward red cap, his red Middleton High jersey hanging a little loose. A small pink blur peeked from his pocket—Rufus, his loyal naked mole rat, squeaked in approval of the music.
"Ready to rock this place, Ronnie?" Bonnie grinned, throwing him a look as she pulled into a spot near the front doors.
Ron gave a thumbs up, mouth full. "Totally."
They were the kind of duo that didn't make sense at first glance—Bonnie, the queen bee with fierce confidence and a sharper tongue, and Ron, goofy, laid-back, and unapologetically weird. But they'd been inseparable since grade school. And when things got rough in their old town, Bonnie had been the one throwing punches at the bullies who thought Ron was easy prey.
Now, Middleton was a fresh start.
As they stepped onto campus, heads turned. Students whispered. Ron didn't notice—he was already fascinated by the school mascot statue—but Bonnie did. She smirked. From across the quad, Kim Possible watched them approach with curious green eyes. Dressed in her cheer uniform, arms crossed, she leaned toward her friends. "Who's the new girl with the killer car and the loud guy?"
Monique raised an eyebrow. "No clue, but the guy's kinda cute in a weird 'please don't trip over your own shoelaces' way."
Tara giggled. "I like her outfit. She's totally got style."
As Bonnie passed, she shot Kim a confident smile. "Cute skirt. I had one like that last year."
Kim blinked. Okay. This was going to be interesting.

Middleton High buzzed with first-day-of-school energy—slammed lockers, the squeak of sneakers, and the occasional freshman looking completely lost. Ron and Bonnie made their way down the crowded hallway, Bonnie walking like she owned the place and Ron trailing behind, still trying to open his jammed locker.
"Ron," Bonnie sighed, spinning around. "Seriously? We've been here ten minutes and you're already losing to your locker?"
"It's rigged," Ron said, yanking on the handle. "I swear. Some kind of anti-Ron tech."
Bonnie rolled her eyes and gave it one hard pull. The locker snapped open.
"Wow. Thank you, locker whisperer," he said with exaggerated awe.
She smirked and flipped her hair over her shoulder. "You're welcome. Come on, we're gonna be late for homeroom." As they turned the corner, they nearly collided with Kim Possible, who was laughing with Monique and Tara. For a second, the two groups just stood there—Bonnie cool and composed, Ron smiling nervously, Kim with that sharp, curious gaze.
"Oh, hey," Kim said, stepping back. "You're the new transfers, right? I'm Kim. That's Monique, and Tara."
"Bonnie," she said smoothly, offering a hand. "And this is Ron."
"Hey," Ron said. "And this is Rufus." He pulled the little mole rat out of his pocket. Rufus gave a chipper wave.
Monique blinked. "Is that a hairless hamster?"
"Naked mole rat," Ron corrected proudly. "He's a genius. And also really good at snacks."
Kim tilted her head, amused. "He's… cute. Kinda."
Bonnie cut in. "We're headed to homeroom. You guys in with us?"
"Yeah," Kim said. "Room 107. With Mr. Barkin."
Monique groaned. "The scariest man alive." She summoned by the very mention of his name, Mr. Barkin stormed out of his classroom like a drill sergeant. Tall, broad-shouldered, and perpetually scowling, he barked at the crowd of loitering students.
"Bell rings in one minute! That means you've got sixty seconds to get your butts in those seats before I start giving out detentions like candy on Halloween!"
Ron flinched. "He seems fun."
Bonnie grabbed his sleeve and dragged him toward the classroom. "Let's go before you get a detention and I have to yell at someone on the first day."
They took their seats—Bonnie near the window, Ron right beside her—Mr. Barkin scanned the room with narrowed eyes. "I see some fresh faces. Let's make one thing clear—Middleton High does not do slacking, slouching, or sass. You want to be lazy, go join the band."
Rufus let out a tiny offended squeak from Ron's pocket.
Mr. Barkin pointed. "No rodents in my classroom!"
Ron covered Rufus with his hand. "Technically, he's not a rodent—he's family."
Barkin glared. "Family or not, he squeaks again and he's in detention."
Bonnie leaned over to Ron and whispered, "Bet you five bucks you're in trouble by lunch."
Ron grinned. "You're on."
Cafeteria Chemistry
The lunch bell rang like a starter pistol. Students poured out of classrooms in waves, heading straight for the cafeteria. The air smelled like pizza, questionable meatloaf, and something vaguely burnt. It was loud. Chaotic. Alive.
Ron, tray in hand and Rufus now peeking out of his hoodie, stood frozen in the middle of the room. "Bonnie… where do we sit?"
Bonnie scanned the tables like a queen choosing her throne. And she spotted it—the cheerleader table. Front and center. Laughing. Gorgeous. Popular.
"Right there." She smiled, flipping her hair. "Time to say hi."
Ron paled. "Are you sure they want us there? They look like they eat people who wear socks with sandals."
"You're not wearing sandals," she said, nudging him forward. "Just follow me and try not to trip."
At the table sat Kim, Tara, Monique, and the rest of the squad—Hope, Liz, and Crystal—all decked out in red-and-white cheer gear. They quieted as Bonnie and Ron approached, trays in hand.
Kim looked up first. "Well look who survived Barkin's first period."
Ron gave a weak smile. "Barely. He threatened Rufus like… three times."
Hope leaned forward, eyes wide. "Is that the little rat-thing you keep in your pocket?"
"Naked mole rat," Ron corrected again. "He's got feelings, you know."
"Aw, he's kind of adorable," Tara said, giving Ron a soft smile.
"Mind if we join you?" Bonnie asked, already sitting down next to Kim with smooth confidence.
"Sure," Kim said, amused. "You kind of just… did."
Ron awkwardly took a spot next to Tara. Rufus popped out and sniffed her fruit cup, making her giggle.
Bonnie glanced around the table. "So, who's who?"
Tara smiled. "You already know Kim. I'm Tara. That's Hope, Liz, and Crystal. We're all on the cheer squad."
Bonnie nodded. "I cheered at my last school. Maybe I'll try out here too."
Crystal raised an eyebrow. "You've got the look for it."
Bonnie smirked. "I know."
Kim studied her for a moment, intrigued. "You and Ron are…?"
"Best friends since forever," Bonnie said. "Like glue."
Monique looked between them. "That's rare. Most guys don't survive that close to the queen bee."
Ron looked up from his tray. "She saved me from bullies in third grade. Twice. She's kind of a tank in heels."
Bonnie gave him a mock glare, but she didn't deny it. "Don't mess with my people."
Tara grinned. "I like her."
Kim took a bite of her sandwich, still watching Ron out of the corner of her eye. He was weird, sure, but… kind of funny. Kinda cute. In a messy, unpredictable way.
"So, Ron," she asked, voice casual. "You play any sports?"
Ron blinked. "Uh… does video game bowling count?"
Bonnie laughed so hard she nearly choked on her soda.
Hope leaned over to Liz. "He's different, huh?"
"Totally," Liz whispered back. "But in a good way."
Bonnie saw it—the way Kim was looking at Ron. Curious. Slightly amused. Interested.
The gym buzzed with energy as the cheer tryouts kicked off. Girls stretched, music blasted from the speakers, and Coach Simmons stood by with a clipboard, chewing gum like it owed her money.
Bonnie adjusted her high ponytail and tied her pink cheer shoes tight. Her outfit matched the squad's red-and-white theme, but she still stood out—radiant, poised, and focused. Tara was already warming up beside her, excited.
"You're seriously gonna kill it," Tara said. "The squad needs someone like you."
Bonnie grinned. "I don't just cheer. I own the routine."
From the bleachers, Ron clapped for her, Rufus waving a tiny foam finger made from a napkin. "Go Bonnie!"
Kim, Monique, and the rest of the cheer team stood by, waiting their turn to perform. Kim glanced toward Bonnie, impressed but also sizing her up. Competition had arrived—and Kim kind of liked it.
Just as Bonnie was about to step forward for her tryout, the gym doors burst open.
Brick Flagg, the self-declared king of Middleton High football, strutted in with his posse of jocks—including Belly, who was exactly as large and loud as his name suggested.
They swaggered over to the side of the gym, grinning like they owned the place.
"Dude," Brick said, nudging Belly and nodding toward Bonnie. "Check out the new girl. That's a ten if I've ever seen one."
Belly whistled. "Pink top, perfect tan… yeah, she's fire."
Ron, sitting just a few feet away, stiffened.
Then Brick squinted. "Wait a second… isn't that the same girl who rolled in with that guy?"
He pointed at Ron.
"Yeah," Belly laughed. "The weird one with the naked hamster."
"Mole rat," Ron muttered, flushing.
Brick raised his voice. "Yo, what's a hot brunette like that doing with a total weirdo like you, Stoppable? You her charity project or somethin'?"
The gym went quiet. Bonnie froze mid-stretch. Her eyes narrowed.
Oh. Hell no.
She turned slowly, walked straight up to Brick, and jabbed a finger in his chest.
"First of all," she snapped, "his name is Ron. Not 'weirdo.' Not 'hamster guy.' Ron. My best friend. And second—"
She shoved him back a step.
"—if you ever talk about him like that again, I'll make sure you're doing push-ups with your tongue for the rest of the semester."
The room was dead silent. Even Coach Simmons blinked.
Brick tried to play it off. "Relax, babe. It was just a joke."
Bonnie's voice was ice. "Do I look like I'm laughing?"
Brick raised his hands and backed off, mumbling something to Belly about "crazy hot girls."
Bonnie turned back to Ron and gave him a wink. "You good?"
Ron, stunned and slightly glowing, nodded. "Totally."
Kim watched from the sidelines, eyebrows raised.
"She really is a tank in heels," Monique whispered.
Kim smirked. "And Ron's got some serious backup."
As the music kicked on again, Bonnie stepped into place for her tryout—and she slayed. High jumps, perfect flips, sharp moves. By the end, the gym was cheering.
Even Kim clapped.
And Ron? He just stared in awe.

The results of the cheer tryouts went up the next morning, posted right outside the gym on a clipboard that already had a crowd gathered around it. Excited whispers filled the hall.
Bonnie Rockwaller – Accepted.
Position: Co-Captain (pending evaluation)
The second her name was spotted, Tara let out a cheer. "You're in! And co-captain? That's huge!"
Bonnie smiled, but not the kind she gave everyone else. This one was proud. A little smug. It felt good being back on top.
Kim raised an eyebrow as she walked up. "Co-captain? Coach Simmons didn't waste time."
Bonnie gave a breezy shrug. "Guess she knows talent when she sees it."
Kim's eyes narrowed—just a little—but she didn't argue. "Congrats."
Within hours, Bonnie was once again the center of attention. The halls felt like a runway. People remembered her name. Jocks tried to talk to her. Hope and Liz already wanted to plan a sleepover. It was like flipping a switch—she was back in her element.
But for Ron, things looked different.
At lunch, he found the cheer table packed, with Bonnie sitting right between Kim and Tara, laughing at something Liz said. Ron hovered nearby, tray in hand, eyes scanning for an empty seat.
"Hey, Bonnie—" he started.
She looked up, smiling out of instinct. "Hey, Ronnie."
Then she saw the table—full. People were watching. Brick and Belly at a nearby table started snickering. Kim caught it too, but didn't say anything.
Bonnie hesitated.
"Um… there's no room right now," she said quickly, eyes darting. "But I'll catch you after, okay?"
Ron froze, then forced a smile. "Yeah. Cool. I'll just… find somewhere else."
He wandered off, sitting down near the vending machines with his tray and Rufus, who squeaked sadly and poked at Ron's mashed potatoes.
From the cheer table, Tara frowned. "Was that Ron?"
Bonnie nodded, picking at her food. "Yeah. I'll see him later. He's fine." But Kim saw it—the guilt behind Bonnie's eyes. The tiny crack in her queen-bee armor.
Later that day, in the hallway between classes. Rufus patted his cheek, trying to cheer him up. Bonnie approached from around the corner, her voice soft. "Ron…"
He didn't look at her. "What's up, B?"
She hesitated. "I didn't mean to ditch you. It just… the table was full and…"
"It's cool," he said. "I get it. You're climbing again."
"Ron, come on—"
He looked at her now, smile still there but softer. "Just don't forget me on the way up, okay?" Bonnie's heart sank a little. She hated how true it sounded being new to Middeton high will leave new chapters in their new life.
