STAR DESTINIES - VOLUME 1

THE TWILIGHT OF THE REPUBLIC - CHAPTER 3

On a remote planet forgotten by the Republic, where the burning sun painted the horizon in golden and orange hues, a blonde-haired boy gazed at the sunset with a furrowed brow. His small fingers clutched the dry sand beneath his hands as if trying to anchor himself to a reality that suddenly felt unstable.

There was something inside him, a sensation he couldn't fully understand, but that manifested as a knot in his chest and a chill running down his spine. It wasn't a specific fear nor an immediate danger threatening his home or his mother. No, this was different. It was a warning, a distant echo in the vastness of something much bigger than him, a silent call resonating in his soul.

The boy couldn't know it yet, but the Force was speaking to him. It whispered about shadows advancing, about imminent changes and decisions that would someday fall upon his shoulders. He couldn't understand the fleeting images crossing his mind nor the dizzying feeling of an uncertain future stretching beyond the stars.

All he knew for certain was that something was about to change. Something huge, uncontrollable... and somehow, he was destined to be part of it.

Meanwhile, Dooku, in his personal chamber on Serenno, observes a hologram of Palpatine explaining the plan.

"They are very close" murmured Sidious with satisfaction "They will all arrive disturbed, worried about their precious Order. And as they cross the Temple doors, they will be greeted by my microscopic probes."

He paused, savoring the moment.

"In fact, those already inside the Temple... already have them within. They are just waiting for me to give the order to activate."

Dooku tilted his head with curiosity.

"What kind of probes are these?"

"Devices designed to accelerate the heartbeat and alter the vital functions of any living being. In time, they will be lethal."

"Nanotechnology."

Sidious smiled, a cold and calculating grin.

"An elegant solution, don't you think? No noise, no battles. Just the precise elimination of our greatest enemies."

"Without a doubt, a brilliant strategy, my Lord. And thus, the idea that the Jedi perished by the Force itself will be even more convincing to the public."

As he listened to his master detail his plan with cold precision, Dooku kept his face impassive. Sidious spoke of the annihilation of the Jedi Order with the same casualness as a strategist moving pieces on a board. No noise, no battles, just a meticulous execution. A massacre disguised as inevitability.

The Count had accepted many things on his path to power. He had justified betrayals, manipulated wills, and closed his eyes to the suffering of others in the name of a greater purpose. But not to Qui-Gon. Not his life.

Dooku nodded with apparent calm, his face unwavering as his master continued detailing his meticulous plan. He feigned approval, maintaining his usual composure, but deep inside, the decision had already been made. And he knew it well.

The moment he decided to save his former apprentice, he also sealed his betrayal to Sidious.

Unaware of the imminent threat looming over their Order, the Jedi on Naboo have managed, thanks to Jar Jar, to locate the Gungan refuge. They have hidden in the Gungan Sacred Place, north of the Lianorm swamp, far from their submerged city, Otoh Gunga.

The plan is clear: to protect the Queen, her decoy will pose as Amidala and negotiate an alliance with the Gungans, hoping to unite forces against the droid army and reclaim Theed.

As they move stealthily through the dense vegetation of the swamp, Obi-Wan breaks the silence with a low question.

"Master, do you think the queen's plan will work?"

Qui-Gon keeps his eyes on the path, but his tone is thoughtful.

"The Gungans are proud and won't be easily convinced. She will have to earn their trust, show them that they are not alone in this. Only if they see themselves as allies will they be able to recover their home."

Obi-Wan nods, but the unease is still present in his voice.

"And what about the other conflict? It feels so distant… and yet so close."

The Jedi Master takes a deep breath.

"The situation is strange. The Force is trying to warn us of an imminent danger, but its message is confusing… Like something is clouding it, as if the dark side is interfering. It no longer flows as it once did."

"I know the Sith have been extinct for centuries, but what if they've returned? What if that's what the Force is trying to tell us?"

Qui-Gon stops for a moment before responding.

"It's possible. That's why we must be prepared for any eventuality. But there's something else that concerns me… The lack of communication from the Council and the Senate. It's as if they're distracted, occupied with something much bigger."

"Most of the Jedi were on important missions. Maybe that's why the Council stopped monitoring each one so closely."

"Perhaps… but I can't shake the feeling that there's something darker behind all of this."

Soon, the group arrives at the Gungan refuge. Before them, the imposing Boss Nass watches them with a stern expression. They all introduce themselves respectfully, while Sabé, dressed as the queen, steps forward elegantly.

Tobler Ceel announces firmly:

"Your Excellency, Queen Amidala of Naboo."

Sabé, in her role as Queen Amidala, approaches serenely and bows.

"Great Chief Boss Nass, Your Excellency…" says Jar Jar.

The Gungan leader fixes his gaze on Jar Jar, with evident displeasure.

"Jar Jar Binks…"

His voice resounds with annoyance.

"Why are you bringing these Naboo to our sacred place?"

"Eh… they came in peace. They need us."

Sabé maintains her composure and responds with dignity.

"I am Queen Amidala of Naboo. We have come to you in peace."

"Naboo treats us like we're fools! They think we're less than them! We don't care about their problems!"

The fate of the alliance hangs by a thread, but Sabé tries to keep the negotiation going.

"We come to you because we wish to form an alliance…"

At this moment, Padmé, dressed as a maiden, steps forward and addresses Boss Nass.

"Your Excellency."

"But who is this insolent one?"

"I am the true Queen Amidala. I apologize, she is my decoy, my protector, my loyal bodyguard. She did this for my safety. But this is not the time to discuss our differences. Our planet is being invaded. We won't survive if we stay divided."

"Why should I help the Naboo? Huh?"

"If we don't act together, we will all suffer. Your people and mine. We are in danger. I kneel before you seeking your help."

Padmé kneels in respect, and all her entourage and the Jedi do the same.

Boss Nass watches her for a moment. Then, his expression changes, and he bursts into a great, guttural laugh.

"I like this! Yes, you speak with much wisdom and care for your people and ours. I think it's good to form an alliance to save our planet! And from now on, the Naboo and the Gungans shall be friends!"

The Gungans clap and celebrate. The alliance between the Naboo and the Gungans is sealed.

"At least things here are going according to plan" says Obi-Wan, watching the situation.

"With the Gungans joining the fight, the odds of victory are clearly in our favor now."

However, not all news is good.

As the Jedi begin to arrive at the Temple, an invisible shadow looms over them. Without anyone noticing, tiny, almost imperceptible microscopic probes are implanted into their bodies, penetrating through the air like a silent poison. The probes, planted in every corner of the Temple, wait for the right moment to activate, with their victims unaware of the threat inside them.

And unfortunately, no one suspects anything. The Jedi begin to gather and discuss the situation, oblivious to the trap closing in on them. As the masters and padawans group together, murmurs of uncertainty begin to fill the Temple.

In the Great Council Chamber, the Jedi exchange confused glances. Yoda, seated in his usual place, observes with unsettling calm. His wisdom tells him that something is wrong, but he cannot identify the source of the disturbance.

The Grand Master, like everyone else, feels the pressure of the evil lurking, but cannot unravel what it is, or where it's coming from. The Force, though always powerful, is confused, filled with echoes of what is to come, but not clear details. They are all united by a strange sense of unease, but none can take a concrete step toward the truth.

"This makes no sense. Why call so many of us at the same time?" asks Ki-Adi-Mundi, in his grave tone, looking at the other members of the council.

"That's what I thought" responds Plo Koon "The Republic's situation is still at a critical point, but we were urgently called back."

"The Force is warning us of something. There's… imbalance" adds Even Piell.

But no one has any idea what danger the Force is trying to warn them about. However, no one knows that, inside their bodies, deep within them, the probes are beginning to work, waiting patiently.

The trap has been set, but the clock hasn't struck its final toll yet.

"We must make sure no Jedi is left out. That's why we must wait until the 24 hours we granted them to show up have passed" says Sidious, watching the clock impatiently as time runs out.

"This means their imminent end is near" adds Dooku, his voice betraying slight concern for what's about to happen.

However, a shadow of unease also looms over him, fearing that his master will discover before expected that Qui-Gon is not in the Temple with the other Jedi, and that, in his impatience, he will decide to go after him personally.

"Soon the Jedi will perish because of their own arrogance, and the whole galaxy will see their fall not as a tragedy, but as an inevitable consequence. They will not be remembered as heroes, but as a threat that the very nature of the Force eradicated, a warning of the danger they posed to the Republic and its people."

"And as time continues its relentless course, only a few hours remain."

Meanwhile, Padmé, along with Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Jar Jar, and their entourage, stands before Boss Nass and the Gungan leaders, who have just sealed the alliance between both factions.

"Now the Gungans will fight alongside the Naboo!" exclaims Boss Nass with a solemn tone.

The gathered Gungans begin to celebrate, striking their weapons on the ground.

"Thank you, Your Excellency. Together we will defeat the Federation" says Padmé, nodding respectfully.

"Jar Jar Binks, you have succeeded in uniting us with the Naboo" says the Gungan leader. "Now, as a sign of our trust, I appoint you pompous General of the great Gungan army."

At these words, Jar Jar opens his eyes in surprise, blinking several times before pointing at himself.

"M-m-m-me? General? Oh no!"

The Gungans cheer the appointment while Jar Jar stands stunned, unable to process the responsibility he has just received.

Padmé intervenes authoritatively, changing the tone of the conversation.

"We've come up with a plan."

The Gungan leaders and Jedi turn their attention to her.

"The Federation has concentrated all its forces in Theed" says the Queen, pointing to a holographic map "Their droid army is vast, but it depends on its central command. If we manage to distract them, we can advance undetected."

Boss Nass nods with interest.

"You will lead an attack on the open fields" says Padmé, continuing "That will draw most of the droids away from the capital. Meanwhile, a small group and I will infiltrate the palace to capture Viceroy Gunray and force him to order the surrender of his troops."

"It's risky, but effective" says Qui-Gon, crossing his arms.

"We will fight! We are not afraid of the battle droids!" says Boss Nass confidently, though one question remains "We will take care of the big battle, but how will we win if the battle droids don't stop?"

Qui-Gon tilts his head slightly in a sign of respect before speaking in a calm voice.

"My padawan and I will infiltrate the Trade Federation base. Our goal is to disable the droid control center."

"And you two will do that alone?" asks Jar Jar.

"It will be necessary to infiltrate the control core without being seen" adds Obi-Wan.

"If we manage to destroy their communication system, all the droids on the battlefield will become inoperable" explains the Jedi Master.

At the plan from his friends, Jar Jar smiles with enthusiasm and exclaims:

"That means the droids will stop fighting! And we will win without fighting much!"

"Exactly" continues Qui-Gon "But for our plan to work, we need you to distract the droid army. If you keep them busy long enough, we'll be able to complete our mission without being detected."

Boss Nass thinks for a moment, then nods firmly.

"We Gungans will make a great distraction! But the Jedi must complete their mission quickly. If not, the Gungans will be in great danger."

"You can count on it, Your Excellency" says the padawan.

"In the meantime, we'll infiltrate Theed and capture the Viceroy" says Padmé, pleased that everyone knows their tasks perfectly "We cannot let him escape to reinforce his troops. Together, we will end the invasion."

Boss Nass strikes the ground with his staff and proclaims proudly:

"Then we are ready! The Naboo and the Gungans will fight together!"

The Jedi exchange a glance and nod. The alliance is sealed. Now all that's left is to fulfill their part of the plan.

Moments later, the warm breeze of Naboo brushes the focused faces of the Jedi as their speeders cut through the air toward the fortified base of the Trade Federation.

The landscape, serene at first glance, contrasts with the growing tension palpable in the Force. Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi exchange a silent glance, aware of the disturbance that has clouded their perceptions since the beginning of the mission.

"It feels like time is running out, Master. But for what? Are we walking into a trap?" asks Obi-Wan, his voice barely louder than a whisper as his blue eyes scan the horizon.

"It seems like something is about to happen at any moment" responds Qui-Gon gravely "The Force is unbalanced. Something dark looms over us. But we cannot let this cloud our judgment."

Obi-Wan nods, struggling to focus his mind on the present. They know that somewhere in that base is the core that, once destroyed, will deactivate the battle droids, giving the crucial advantage to the Gungans.

Meanwhile, in the vast green fields of Naboo, the Gungan army marches in formation. The rhythmic sound of their steps resonates in sync with the hum of their energy shields and the explosive bubbles they carry. Jar Jar Binks, now dressed in the traditional armor of his people, tries to maintain composure while marching alongside General Tobler Ceel.

"Much confidence in the Jedi! Eh?" exclaims Jar Jar, trying to hide his nervousness.

"They will succeed" responds the general firmly "But if not, the Gungans are ready to fight."

In the distance, the metallic reflection of the droid army unfolds, waiting with cold precision for the order to attack. The tension in the air is almost palpable.

Back with the Jedi, as they approach the base, Qui-Gon raises his hand to signal for them to stop.

"This is where it gets tricky" he says, pointing to the automated turrets guarding the main entrance "Obi-Wan, we must enter quickly and undetected."

Obi-Wan nods.

"I trust in the Force, Master. We will succeed."

With one last exchange of determined glances, the Jedi ignite their lightsabers and charge toward the base, knowing that the fate of Naboo, and perhaps the galaxy, depends on their success.

Meanwhile, Queen Padmé Amidala and her entourage split into two groups to execute their plan. Padmé personally leads one of the teams, while Sabé, her loyal decoy, assumes her role as the queen to confuse the enemy. Both groups move swiftly through the streets of Theed, using secret passages and less-traveled paths to avoid detection by the droids.

"Remember, confusion is our greatest advantage" Padmé whispers to her team as they advance "They must not discover who the true queen is until it's too late."

Amidala, accompanied by Captain Panaka and a small group of Naboo soldiers, glided through the side corridors of the palace, advancing with stealth but determination. Every step echoed on the cold marble of the halls, but the tension in the air made the sounds seem farther away, absorbed by the urgency of the mission.

"Captain, make sure no one deviates from the plan" Amidala whispered, her eyes fixed on the end of the corridor "The Viceroy must not have time to react."

Panaka nodded.

"Trust us, Your Majesty. We'll make sure he doesn't escape."

Meanwhile, Sabé and her group marched through the main entrance, drawing the attention of most of the Trade Federation guards. Dressed in the majestic cloak and elaborate crown of the queen, Sabé maintained a serene expression, hidden behind the royal makeup that concealed her true identity. The soldiers accompanying her feigned the same formality, knowing that every second they held the enemy's attention was crucial for Amidala's success.

As the teams set their plans in motion, on the vast fields of Naboo, the Gungan army prepared for the imminent battle.

"Hold the line, Gungans!" shouted General Tarpals, his firm voice ringing through the ranks.

The ground vibrated as the immense army of Trade Federation droids began to advance. The battle droids, with their blasters ready, formed an imposing mechanical wall. However, the Gungans were undeterred. With a unified war cry, they activated their energy shields, creating a bluish protective bubble that gleamed under the Naboo sun.

The first shots from the droids sparked against the shields, but the Gungan defenses held. Then, the Gungans counterattacked. With a coordinated movement, they launched their energy balls, which exploded on impact, knocking down entire rows of droids.

"For Naboo!" roared Jar Jar, surprising even himself with his bravery.

Meanwhile, the Jedi continued their infiltration into the enemy base. They moved cautiously but swiftly, knowing that time was crucial to support the Gungans.

"The core energy is near" whispered Qui-Gon, sensing the tension in the Force.

But before they could reach the controls, a wave of battle droids and droidekas blocked their path. The lightsabers ignited with a familiar hum, illuminating the dark corridors of the base.

"They've found us!" shouted Obi-Wan, blocking the shots with precise movements.

The battle was intense. The Jedi fought with skill and determination, dodging the shots and dismantling droids with every precise strike. After an exhausting fight, they managed to break through to the controls.

Focusing on the task, Obi-Wan manipulated the systems until he finally deactivated the communications of the droid army. Immediately, in the fields of Naboo, the droids stopped, their systems powered down, leaving the Gungans victorious.

"We did it!" exclaimed Jar Jar, as the Gungans celebrated their unexpected victory.

Meanwhile, Padmé and Sabé's plan had worked perfectly. The enemy, confused by the true queen's identity, split up trying to capture both of them. This gave them the advantage they needed to corner Viceroy Nute Gunray.

"Surrender now, and maybe we'll consider your terms!" shouted a Federation commander, aiming his blaster at Sabé.

Sabé raised a hand authoritatively, maintaining her composure.

"There will be no surrender. Naboo will not bow to invaders" her words resonated with a certainty that momentarily destabilized the guards.

Padmé, with her blaster in hand, approached the Viceroy, who recoiled in fear, catching him by surprise.

"Not so fast, Viceroy" she said, pointing her blaster at him "The occupation of Naboo ends here."

"But what does this mean?" Nute Gunray asked, confused.

"The war is over, Viceroy!" Padmé declared firmly "Your invasion has failed. Naboo is free."

The Viceroy, trembling, dropped his weapon as Sabé and the rest of the entourage secured the room.

Gunray, pale and shaking, raised his hands in surrender.

"This is a mistake! The Federation has rights..."

"Your rights do not include oppressing my people" Amidala replied firmly.

As Panaka and his men disarmed the remaining guards.

With the Viceroy captured and the droids deactivated thanks to the Jedi's efforts, Naboo's victory was sealed. The Gungans celebrated in the fields, while the queen and her entourage secured the palace.

Peace began to dawn on the horizon. The combination of the Gungans' bravery, the queen's strategy, and the Jedi's determination had saved Naboo, marking the beginning of a new era of alliances and hope.

But as Naboo celebrated its liberation, the Republic remained unaware that its greatest light had been extinguished.

The 24-hour deadline had passed. Hundreds of Jedi, padawans, and young apprentices were gathered at the Jedi Temple, their faces reflecting confusion and concern. Every time a new member of the Order arrived, the same questions were repeated:

"Do you know what's going on?"

"Have you received any news?"

But the answer was always the same: no one had any idea what was happening.

The Senate had kept a deathly silence. Neither Palpatine nor Count Dooku had communicated again after that mysterious alarm message that had summoned Jedi from across the galaxy. The atmosphere was thick with palpable tension, as though the Force itself was warning of an impending disaster.

Then, suddenly, a subtle vibration ran through the ground of the Temple, followed by a barely perceptible hum. That was when it happened.

Sidious, from his hideout, activated the terrible probes implanted in the bodies of the Jedi. Without warning, one by one they began to fall. Padawans collapsed in the middle of conversations, apprentice children fell during their exercises, and Jedi Knights, caught by unbearable pain, had no chance to react.

In a matter of minutes, the Jedi Temple became a silent slaughterhouse. From the youngest and most inexperienced to the most skilled veterans and the most powerful Masters, none could resist that betrayal.

The halls of the Temple, once filled with life and hope, fell into a deadly silence, only interrupted by the echo of bodies falling to the ground. The Jedi Order, guardians of peace for a thousand generations, had been annihilated in an instant, victims of the darkest betrayal.

And while Naboo celebrated its freedom, the Republic had no idea that its greatest light had been extinguished.

Thank you for joining me in this chapter!
