The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden glow over the beach as the still-warm breeze tugged at Bella's hair. It had been a little over a week since that conversation with her dad, and things between her and Paul had grown more comfortable but it still felt like they were tiptoeing around something neither of them was quite ready to put into words. Their relationship was still new, still fresh, but it was undeniable. Every touch lingered a little longer, every glance held a little more meaning. And despite the uncertainty that sometimes crept in, Bella couldn't help but feel a strange sense of peace when she was with him.
She sat just a little off to the side, watching as Jared, Embry, Quil, and Sam laughed and goofed around in the surf. They had spent most of the day hanging out, playing volleyball, and tossing a football around. The kind of laid-back beach day that seemed so simple yet carried a weight of its own in their world.
Bella tucked her knees to her chest on the blanket, wrapped in a sweatshirt to ward off the cool evening air. She was enjoying the atmosphere, the chatter around her, but her eyes kept drifting back to Paul. He was by the water, looking uncharacteristically tense as he watched his friends. His crooked smile was replaced with a more serious expression, his jaw tight, and there was a certain restless energy to him. She frowned. She didn't know what it was, but something about him had been off all afternoon.
"Hey, look at Paul," Jared said with a teasing grin, nudging Embry who was sitting next to him. "Man's been all fidgety all day. Somebody got a hot date tonight or something?"
Bella shot them a look but Jared just wiggled his eyebrows at her.
Embry snickered, his eyes flicking over to where Paul was now pacing a bit near the shoreline. "Maybe he's just too busy thinking about… what he's gonna do to make his big move. Or not make it, depending on how it goes." He winked, clearly poking fun at Paul's stressed demeanor.
Bella's cheeks flushed, and she quickly averted her eyes, pretending to focus on the waves. She wasn't sure what Jared or Embry meant by that, but she could guess. It had been a while since that first kiss, and while she and Paul had spent more time together since then, things between them were still… delicate. She could tell he was still figuring out what it meant to be with her, and sometimes, that uncertainty made him just a little irritable. But Bella knew better than to say anything. She didn't want to draw attention to their connection, not with everyone else around. Not yet.
"Jeez, I think Paul's gonna pop a vein if he keeps pacing like that," Jared continued, his voice loud enough for Paul to hear now.
Paul stopped in his tracks, his back stiffening, and then turned around with a frown. "What's your problem, huh? You got something to say?"
Jared raised his hands in mock surrender. "Nah, just saying. Someone's a little high-strung today."
Bella bit her lip, watching Paul's shoulders tense again as the guys snickered. She knew the teasing was all in good fun, but it was starting to get under his skin. And she had a feeling the real reason behind his edginess had less to do with the boys and more to do with the fact that they hadn't spent time alone together in a while.
She stood up and walked over to him, trying not to draw attention. "Hey," she said, her voice soft as she approached. "Everything okay?"
Paul turned to face her, his eyes flashing for a brief second before he forced a smile. "Yeah. Why?"
She raised an eyebrow, her gaze lingering on the tightness in his posture. "You've been kind of… off today."
He shifted uncomfortably, running a hand through his hair. "Just… a lot on my mind, I guess. Nothing to worry about."
Bella could feel the way his mood was shifting, how the guys' teasing had only made it worse. She didn't want to push him, but she couldn't help but ask, "It's not… because of me, is it?"
He froze for a moment, his gaze meeting hers. "What? No," he said quickly, though his voice didn't sound quite as convincing as it should've. He rubbed the back of his neck, the tension evident in every small movement. "Look, I just… I'm not used to being the center of attention because I stay with a girl. You know that."
Bella tilted her head, studying him. "I don't think it's the attention, Paul. I think it's that… maybe you're nervous about what happens next."
He sighed deeply, exhaling a sharp breath. "Maybe." His tone was low, but Bella could hear the hint of something vulnerable in it. "Maybe I'm just a little… impatient."
A soft laugh escaped Bella's lips before she could stop it, and she quickly covered her mouth with her hand. Paul shot her a curious glance, a little taken aback.
"What?" he asked, his brow furrowing.
She shook her head, feeling a little lighter at the idea of him being nervous, of him being impatient. "Nothing. It's just… I didn't expect you to be the one who's, you know, nervous."
Paul raised an eyebrow, and the corner of his mouth twitched as though he was trying to fight back a grin. "Oh, you think I'm 'pent up,' huh?"
Bella's cheeks flushed, but she couldn't hold back the smile that spread across her face. "Jared said… I just…I mean, yeah. You've been a little jumpy."
He chuckled, the tension easing from his shoulders. "Maybe I am. I just… I want to make sure I'm doing this right. For you."
Her heart fluttered at his words, and she reached for his hand, squeezing it gently. "You don't have to worry so much. I'm not going anywhere."
Paul's expression softened, his dark eyes warm. "I know. Just… sometimes, it feels like we're moving too slow, and I don't know if I should be pushing more. But I don't want to mess it up."
Bella's heart skipped a beat. "You're not messing it up. You're just being you. And that's enough for me."
Paul smiled, a genuine smile this time, one that crinkled the edges of his eyes. He leaned closer, his voice lowering. "Well, I'm glad I'm enough for you. Because you're definitely way too good for me."
Just as Bella's breath hitched, there was a loud shout from Jared across the beach. "Hey, Paul! You gonna stand there and mope, or are you actually gonna join us for some fun? Or is Bella holding you hostage?"
Paul groaned, his face flushing with embarrassment. "I swear, they never let up."
Bella laughed, the sound light and carefree, and squeezed his hand once more before she let go. "Maybe they just know you're a little distracted."
He nodded with a thoughtful look and turned toward the guys, giving them a playful glare. "Alright, alright. I'm coming. Don't get your shorts in a twist."
Bella watched as he jogged off toward the others, the teasing and laughter continuing to follow him. It was strange how quickly the tension had melted away.
