A/N: I don't know exactly where I'm going with this but I do know that Liberty Van Zandt deserved to have guys fighting over her and a storyline like this should have been canon .
Song title is The Girl Is Mine by Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney.
Liberty was determined to never interact with another guy at Degrassi again.
The weight of Sean's rejection was crushing her as she ate lunch by herself but she would not cry, at least not publicly. The other kids can think whatever they want about her, but they would never be allowed to think of her asweak. But she did want to know what was so wrong with her that boys found her undesirable? Her intellect? Her ambition? Her quirks? Her appearance? Was it because she was bl-
"Liberty," Sean called out to her, snapping her out of her thoughts, but only temporarily. Once her mind rode over a certain path, it never stopped running. When she looked up at him, there wasn't a harsh expression of disgust on his face anymore. But it'll forever be implanted in her mind though, as with all of her other bad memories of being rejected.
"So, my words back there sucked and I'm here to say I'm sorry for that. I was being a dick," Sean apologized. He sounded sincere but it wasn't enough to brush past the hurt yet.
"I'll finish the project on my own so you don't have to keep working with me," she replied flatly. It was the only response her brain could come up with at the moment while it was shutting down. For a second his face twitched in annoyance, which she was quite used to at this point, before going back to remorse.
"No, that's not what I want. What I want to know is justwhywould you want to date a guy like me in the first place?" He demanded. "You're the smartest girl in our grade, probably the smartest in the entire fucking school actually, you rarely ever get in trouble, your dad is a lawyer and your mom is a doctor. I'm the opposite of all of that. There's no way I would be good enough for you."
"You were nice to me," she replied simply, realizing just how pathetic and childish she sounded.
"I wasn't before," he reminded her.
"I know but then you were. You told me to stop caring about JT when he'll never like me back because I can do better. It wasn't something I expected hearing from you and it changed my entire opinion on you. Underneath the tough exterior, you're a really great guy," she explained as best as she could. She hated how emotionally she couldn't articulate herself as well as she could logically.
Sean's face softened up at that. Something was visually clicking in his mind. "You know, I think we can hang out together after school…just without you wearing all of that fake bad girl getup. Just be yourself," he offered.
Liberty found it in her to smile brightly again. Maybe today wouldn't end so badly after all.
"I can't believe Liberty would do something so cringe but then again it's Liberty," J.T. remarked to Toby the next day as they walked through the halls of Degrassi. "For someone so annoyingly smart when it comes to books, she's an idiot when it comes to realizing when a guy doesn't want her."
He didn't know why but Liberty crushing on Sean put him in such a foul mood. Maybe it was because Sean was his friend and he didn't want him in the same irritating position of being aggressively pursued by the school dork. Or perhaps he couldn't stand Liberty that much outside of being a friend. Either way the idea of them being together was in serious danger of making him puke. Just seeing them interact at all made him pissed.
"I think it's kinda great that she's finally getting over you. Sucks for your wet dreams though," Toby teased.
"Hey, shut the fuck up about that in public, will you?" J.T. hissed. He didn't even want to acknowledge those dreams he'd been having of her lately. They were more like nightmares actually and having to take cold showers every morning was getting humiliating. He couldn't understand why his body was betraying him like this when he should be dreaming about Manny instead.
"Calm yourself, bro," Toby demanded while holding his hand up protectively.
J.T. rolled his eyes as he looked forward and continued walking, but the sight in front of him made him stop abruptly in his tracks.
Liberty and Sean were walking down the hallway together, and Sean had his arm around Liberty's shoulders. Romantically. She was smiling at him sweetly and he was returning the favor. The lovey dovey atmosphere between them was obvious.
"What…the…fuck?" J.T. asked out loud, and the question came out way more angrier than he intended.
