Subaru Natsuki was really not feeling well. The young man currently lay sprawled on the rough cobblestone street, his hands bloodied and scraped as he frantically tried to pull himself up. The sting in his palms and shins was sharp, but the world wasn't about to give him a moment's reprieve. Before he could fully get a grip on his bearings, a dirty apron suddenly struck his face like a speeding comet, sending him spiraling back to the ground with a loud thud. Groaning, Subaru strained himself to look up, his vision spinning until it focused in on the towering figure of his former employer. The large man's face was flushed crimson with rage, his rigid frame casting an imposing shadow over the terrified boy.

The air around the two began to crackle with tension as a crowd began to form at the spectacle, whispering and snickering directed at the pitiful sight of the teen. Subaru wanted to say something, anything, but the words lodged themselves in his throat, paralyzed by fear and the sharp sting of humiliation.

"You fucking punk," his boss snarled, the venom in his voice cutting through the air like a knife. "You're lucky I don't skin your ass!"

Subaru flinched at the fury in the man's words. Slowly, shakily, he clambered to his feet, his legs trembling beneath him as he did so, His eyes, wide and desperate, were locked on the shopkeeper's face. He needed a miracle, something, anything that could save him from this. But no miracle would ever come. He was a deer in the headlights, helpless and exposed for all the capital to see.

"I…" Subaru croaked, his voice barely audible above the commotion surrounding him. The shopkeeper roughly grabbed him by the collar, pulling him close as his hard stare bore into his eyes, the gaze smoldering with an intensity that made Subaru's heart race with fear.

"I WHAT?" he roared, his acrid breath hot against Subaru's exposed skin.

"I'm… sorry," Subaru managed to squeak pathetically, his tone weak and hollow. The man's grip tightened, his knuckles burning white with anger.

"Sorry? YOU'RE SORRY? Sorry that you've RUINED my business? Sorry you can't handle even the SIMPLEST DAMN TASKS? Sorry you've made me look like a fool TIME AND TIME AGAIN? Is THAT what you're sorry for?"

Subaru's throat was dry. He wanted to plead, but all that came out was a broken, "Sir… Please…"

But his boss wasn't interested in apologies or explanations. With a snarl, he shoved Subaru to the ground like he was tossing away a load of garbage. "No. That's it. I'm done with your bullshit excuses, kid." The man turned his back to the defeated Subaru, a lone wrath-filled eye still trained on his former employee. "I'm only gonna say this once, so listen very closely. Don't ever show your face 'round here again. You hear me? If I even catch a glimpse of your mug near my shop again, you're fucking done. Understand?"

"Wait, don't…!" Subaru yelled, reaching out his hands in desperation, but it was already too late. The heavy wooden doors slammed shut in his face with a deafening thud. The sound echoed in his mind, the weight of finality crashing over him like a tidal wave.

Subaru stood frozen for a moment, his heart pounding in his chest. Slowly, he glanced around, noticing the onlookers gathered around him; some with sneers on their faces, others with expressions of pity. Their eyes felt like daggers, cutting into the last shred of his dignity. A hot tear slid down Subaru's cheek, and he ran a trembling hand through his messy hair. The world blurred as he began stumbling away, his mind swirling with newfound despair.

The third time. This was the third time he had lost a job. The third time he had been cast aside like nothing. He had nothing left. No money, no pride, no plan. Return by Death wouldn't save him from this downward spiral. It couldn't.

He wanted to just collapse. He wanted to scream, to beg, to do anything to make the hopelessness disappear. But Subaru, despite everything, wasn't ready to give in. Not yet. He had made a promise, after all; a promise that he would find a way to make things right. And even in his darkest moment, he couldn't break that vow for his life. Because…

She was still counting on him.

Subaru's chest tightened as the thought flickered in his mind. No, not now, anytime but now. Not with the entire world crashing down around him. He shook his head vigorously, trying to push the pulsing memories out of his mind. The pain he was feeling was already borderline overwhelming; he didn't need to add any more weight to it. No, he couldn't do that, no sir. Just keep moving on, moving forward, always without fail. After all…

His name was Subaru Natsuki. And Subaru Natsuki always survives, no matter what.

Subaru continued to mindlessly trudge forward, his mind and body lost in the murky depths of his own failure as the sun slowly dipped into the horizon, the growing darkness slowly closing in on the teen as he wandered aimlessly through the winding city. That is, until a strange sensation slowly crept up his spine. It was a feeling he knew all too well: eyes on him, watching his every move. He gradually quickened his pace, his heart rate rapidly spiking, but before long it was already too late, as a group of rough-looking men suddenly appeared from all sides, blocking his path both front and back.

"Hey, where d'ya think you're going, buddy?" one of them sneered mockingly, the ring tightening as they stepped in closer. Subaru's breath froze in his throat. His feet were paralyzed, every instinct screaming at him to run. He cast a quick glance over his shoulder, but the way behind him was already blocked by another two rough-cut guys. There was no escape now. He was cornered.

"Hey, listen, you've got the wrong guy," Subaru stammered, but even he didn't believe his own words. He knew what this was about.

Without a word, the men were on him in a flash, the teen having no room to fight back as the goons shoved him into the narrow alleyway. Subaru resisted hard, trying to maneuver his way to freedom, but a swift punch to his face sent him staggering forward. His legs buckled as they backed him deeper into the darkness between the buildings. His pulse was hammered in his ears, panic rising with each and every second.

And then, from the shadows, a figure emerged; a portly man with a greasy smile and an unsettling gleam in his eyes. Subaru felt his stomach churn at the sight.

"Well, well, well," the man's voice was thick and mocking, dripping with false cheer as he approached. "If it isn't Subaru Natsuki, my favorite customer." He spread his arms wide as if greeting an old friend. "Though, I must say, you've been a bit… behind on your payments."

Subaru's blood ran cold. The lender guy. Of course, it had to be him. Of all days, how could he have forgotten so easily? It was times like these that he cursed his own stupidity and rashness; if only he had actually considered what he was doing, he wouldn't be here right now. But he was a hopeless screw-up, like always, and in a moment of weakness fell into the iron grip of this slime and his band of cutthroats. Now, the consequences of that mistake were staring him down, right down to his very soul.

"H-hey, man! Fancy seeing you here!" he tried to say, the man and his buddies not moving an inch as the teen tried to explain himself. "I know that debt was due like, a week ago and all, but I've gone through kind of a rough patch recently and… I don't… have the money yet." Subaru muttered that last part with a strained breath, forcing himself to meet the man's fierce gaze. He straightened his back, though his hands trembled anxiously at his sides. He wasn't about to give these guys the satisfaction of seeing his fear. "I just need more time. Honest to the dragon."

The portly man chuckled, a low, cruel sound that made Subaru's skin crawl. "Oh, I'm afraid your time's run out, my boy. You see, we don't lend out of charity. You borrow, you pay back. It's a simple arrangement." He gave a nod to the men flanking Subaru. "And when you don't… well, you have to take responsibility." One of the goons cracked his knuckles, sending a spike of adrenaline surging through Subaru's veins.

Like hell he was gonna buckle to this!

"Go ahead, asshat" Subaru spat, a flicker of defiance flashing through his eyes. "Do your worst. I'm not afraid of death."

The man's grin widened, his teeth gleaming in the dim light of the alley. "Death?" he laughed, a sickening howl that made his spine shudder with disgust. "My boy, who said anything about killing you?"

Subaru's breath hitched, confusion flashing across his face.

"What?"

"Oh, no, no," the lender continued, shaking his head as if Subaru had said something absurd. "Killing you would be too easy. No point in doing that. Instead, I've got something much more... productive in mind." He let the word linger in the air, enjoying the moment.

"You see," the man leaned in closer, lowering his voice, "Me and my boys were chatting a bit, and we came to the conclusion that we're just gonna... sell you off. After all, you've got nothing but the clothes on your back, and I'm sure plenty of folks would be willing to pay a nice price for a man like you. Strong enough to work, weak enough to control." He let out another chuckle, this one cold and devoid of amusement. "But before we hand you over, well..." He gestured to his goons, a malicious twinkle in his eye. "I think a little... reminder is in order. Can't have you thinking you're untouchable."

Subaru's heart dropped in his chest, The men surrounding him flashed him eager grins, fists clenched in anticipation as they tightened the circle. Subaru tensed, knowing what was coming. He'd been in plenty of scrapes before, but this was something else entirely; There was no escape here. He was at their mercy.

"Don't worry," the lender said, his voice dripping with sadistic pleasure, "this'll only hurt... a lot."

And with that, the ordeal began. A sickening crack echoed through the alley as a fist connected with Subaru's gut, the blow sending him crashing into the wall. Pain exploded in his skull, his vision swimming. But before he could gather himself, another strike connected with his ribs, followed by another to his side. Subaru gasped in pain, doubling over, but they didn't stop, not even for a second. The men beat him relentlessly, laughing and jeering with every punch, every kick. Subaru's will was wavering with each strike, his body crumpling under the unyielding barrage of blows. Blood began to fill his mouth, the taste of iron sharp on his tongue, but he refused to cry out. Even as the pain threatened to consume him, he wouldn't give them that satisfaction. The head honcho watched on with twisted delight, his arms folded across his chest, as his goons continued their assault.

"You have no idea how long I've waited to do this, do you?" he cackled, another blow to the gut sending his broken body tumbling on the ground. "Of how good it feels to put morons like you in their place? Of seeing the color drained from your face?"

Subaru shrieked, his leg nearly crushed as the head lender stomped and pressed it to near snapping, the boy letting out a crescendoing sob as the tears began to flow down his face. The man and his goons, seeing to a job well done, finally relented, the shadowy figures backing away to leave the boy to anguish in his suffering.

"It's what I fucking live for. But I think we've had enough fun for today. Am I right, boys?" the man theatrically raised his arms, his buddies giving him approving hollers as they admired their handiwork. "The night grows ever young. 'Bout time we settle our business here and get back what we're owed. Isn't that right, 'Subaru dear'?"

The teen bit his lip in agony, rage clashing headfirst with despair at the sound of those words. The lenders, of course, had no clue of his anger or the weight of that title, nor did they care, only laughing at the pathetic display of their victim lying bruised and battered on the floor.

"Let him go."

The words were calm, steady, but laced with a dangerous edge that made everyone freeze. Subaru's head jerked up, his vision hazy and clouded with pain. He barely registered the shift in the air as all eyes turned toward the source of the voice.

Standing at the mouth of the alleyway, bathed in the fading light of distant street lamps, was a white fox. Her fur shimmered under the light, shimmering strong against the gloom of the surrounding shadows. A small leather pouch hung from her neck, swaying gently as she stepped forward with captivating grace. Subaru's heart skipped a beat, the boy unable to believe what he was seeing right now.

"Echidna...?" he whispered, his voice weak but filled with disbelief.

The fox spirit's sharp, black eyes locked onto the men surrounding Subaru, her gaze burning with barely concealed fury as she took in the situation in front of her. The very space seemed to shift around her, like the air itself was bending to her very will. The loan sharks faltered slightly, uneasy murmurs passing between them. Though her presence was unexpected, even they knew what she likely was. Spirits were rare, but those who could speak and act like humans tended to be powerful. And Echidna; her aura alone was enough to make their hands tremble with terror.

"Who… what the hell is that?" one of the goons muttered, shooting a nervous glance at his companions.

"That a spirit? What's it doing here?"

"I don't know, man, but things ain't looking so good now…"

"Be quiet, you idiots." The ringleader said, turning quickly to match the dangerous spirit standing in front of them. The portly man, who had just moments before been so full of himself, took a tentative step toward the vixen, trying to keep his composure in check despite her sickeningly murderous aura. Sweat began to bead on his forehead, and though his voice remained firm, Subaru could sense the fear creeping into his eyes.

"Leave this place, spirit. What is happening here is none of your business," the man said, his bravado barely masking his unease. "We're just collecting a debt from our client here. If you know what's best, you'll just leave us be."

Echidna's gaze flicked to the goons, then back to the man, her head shaking in an unimpressed manner. "Good for me? You misunderstand my words," she said, her voice starting to shake with lethal intent. "Your time is up, and I have no intention of waiting."

The spirit tensed into a battle stance, her expression darkening with each passing second. "Let him go, or you won't be leaving here alive."

Her words sent a visible shudder through the group. The wind around her seemed to hum with raw magical energy, a barely contained force waiting to be unleashed. The men exchanged panicked glances, their fear palpable. One by one, they began to back away, tentative steps turning into sprints as they fled for their lives. Within moments, only the ringleader remained, his breathing heavy as he realized he was cornered.

"Shit for brains! Don't leave me here!" he yelled, but it was all but in vain. The alley walls closed in around him, and with his men gone, escape was looking more and more futile. His eyes darted between Echidna and Subaru, his mind racing. A flash of anger twisted his expression as the weight of his situation set in. He knew that look the spirit was giving off; the creature had no intention of sparing him, that much was obvious. He bared his teeth in anger, his attention flicking from the vixen to Subaru, who still lay crumpled on the ground, barely conscious.

In an instant, the man was upon the boy, the teen barely able to respond as he was gripped tightly by the collar. "This is all YOUR fault, isn't it?" he spat, eyes wild. "You led that bitch here, didn't you? You think you can pull one over me? Huh?"

With a snarl, the man drew a knife from his coat, the blade gleaming under the moonlight.

"If I'm gonna die, I'm taking you with me!"

Subaru barely had time to react. His mind screamed in panic as he tried to shield himself, but he was at his limit, his pain too great and muscles too weak. He saw the blade coming, a flash of steel gunning for his throat, and steeled himself for the cold release of death once more.

But that release... never came.

Before the knife could reach him, a blinding flash of red overtook his vision. The ringleader stopped in his tracks, his body going rigid as if frozen in place. For a moment, nothing happened. Subaru blinked, confused, his crumbling mind struggling to process what he just happened.

Then, without warning, the man's body began to fall apart. His skin began to split in half before breaking open in strips, neat and precise, as if carved up by an invisible blade. Thick chunks of blood and flesh exploded across the street and walls, painting the cobblestone floor in deep crimson. The ringleader's expression was frozen in silent terror, but there was no time for him to scream, no time to even realize he was dead. His body collapsed in a gory heap, the grip on Subaru's collar slacking as the teen dropped onto the cold floor below, his heart pounding in his chest as he store on at the sight in utter shock. The metallic tang of blood wafted through the air, thick and oppressive as it stung at his nose.

Echidna stood nobly over the remains, her eyes cold and unflinching, her fur stained thick with crimson blood. The red glow of her magic faded from the alley as she looked down at Subaru, her expression an unreadable mask of emotion.

"It's been a while," she said softly, her voice cutting through the tension like a knife through silk. "I suppose I got here just in time."

"Echidna, I…" Subaru started to say, but before he could utter another word the spirit was already at his side, pulling him into a tight embrace as her slender frame wrapped around the teen protectively. Subaru's breath hitched in his throat, overwhelmed by emotion and the sudden tenderness as the spirit nuzzled him softly.

"Hush, Subaru dear, you don't need to say anymore," she replied, the teen giving her a tired nod as he weakly clung to her body, the vixen giving him a reassuring smile before carefully lowering him to the ground. Subaru wanted to say something, anything, but he just couldn't bring himself to. So many questions were racing through his mind; Why she was here? How she had found him? Did she finish what she set out to do? But he was just too weak, too tired to ask any more questions, so he just continued to let his friend dote over him, content to let go of the reins and let fate do its thing. Soon enough, a warm glow began to emanate from her paws, the spirit chanting something under her breath as his wounds slowly began to mend under the healing spell, his pain and exhaustion fading away as the magic worked its way through his body.

As her healing magic continued its work, Echidna's gaze began traversing over Subaru's disheveled appearance. The dirt and blood that clung to his clothes and hair, the hollow and dejected look in his eyes, the pointed thinness of his arms and torso; he looked like a shadow of the person she had once known, and the spirit forced herself to bite back tears at the terrible state of her friend.

"You've… been through a lot," she murmured, her voice thick with emotion.

"Yeah, you could say that. Trying to make it on my own hasn't exactly worked out." His voice wavered slightly, the attempt at lightening the air falling flat as the weight of his words sank in. There was a bitter edge to his tone, a sadness he couldn't hide.

Echidna's eyes began to water, her ears drooping as the full realization hit her. She thought she was doing the right thing. She thought that Subaru would find his way, that he would meet her again with that shining smile she had slowly grown to love. But she could see now, that wasn't the case. She could see now that she had left him for dead, left him to suffer alone and unloved. The teen's words back at that hotel so long ago flashed in her mind, a wave of guilt now crashing over her at the memory.

"I'm so sorry, Subaru," Echidna whispered, her voice trembling as her emotions spilled over. She pulled him close again, gripping him tightly as if her embrace could somehow make up for all the time she had been gone. "I should never have left your side. I thought… I thought that everything was fine, but… I was wrong. You've been hurting this whole time, and I wasn't there when you needed me. I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry…"

Subaru's heart clenched at the sincerity in her voice. His eyes were fixed to the open sky, still stunned by the raw emotional energy the scene was giving off. He had always seen Echidna as someone distant and composed, all-knowing and always in control. This vulnerability, this hidden side of her, it was new, and it left him at a loss for words.

"Echidna…" Subaru finally whispered, his hands wandering through her fluffy mane as he spoke. "It's fine. You were doing just doing what you had to. You've got your own mission to follow, after all. It makes sense that you would have more important things to…"

His words were cut off as Echidna reared her head back, her snout pressing against his nose as her soft lips pressed firmly against his. Subaru's mind went blank, his heart skipping a beat as the spirit pressed into the kiss, and for a brief moment, time itself seemed to freeze. The kiss wasn't that long, just a fleeting touch, but it was enough to leave him completely without words. When she inevitably pulled back, he could see her cheeks flushed with a faint dusting of pink, her gaze determined yet full of love.

"Screw the old mission," Echidna replied breathlessly, her voice firm and steady with growing fortitude. "I understand now how futile it all was. I have a new one now, one I truly care to stick by."

Subaru blinked, still trying to process what had just happened. "A new mission? Echidna… what are you saying...?"

"My mission now," she repeated, her eyes firmly locked with his, "is to stand by your side. From now on, until the end of time."

"Echidna, does this mean…?"

"Yes, it does. Subaru, do you… want to make a contract with me?"

"Echidna…" Subaru said, his eyes sparkling with newfound hope. "…I would love nothing more."

The spirit flashed him a happy grin, Subaru giving her a warm smile in return as she leaned in closer one more time, taking his lips with hers for one more ride. The two held each other close for what felt like an eternity, neither wanting to let this moment pass them by. Soon enough, the morning sun began to rise on a new day, and as the two lovers finally parted from one another, Subaru couldn't stop himself from shedding a tear, a slight yet joy-filled laugh escaping his throat as he held his companion's eyes. Silently, a soft glow began to emanate around the boy and his spirit, almost as though the heavens themselves were smiling on their reunion, before dissipating into nothingness once more, affirming their newfound connection in both soul and body.

"Subaru…"

"Echidna…"

"Hey, what the hell is going on down here?"

Subaru and Echidna looked back, the commotion growing palpable as a contingent of guards suddenly rushed to the scene, a small but growing mass of onlookers trailing their steps. Echidna's eyes flickered to the human sashimi lying behind her, before slowly tracing the flesh and blood staining her matted fur.

"...oh dear. It seems… like we have some explaining to do…"

"Yeah, that seems about right," Subaru replied, the two sharing sorry looks with one another as they were led out of the alley.

The next few hours had been a blur for Subaru. In the aftermath of the loan shark's gruesome demise, there had been no time to linger in shock. Before Subaru could fully grasp what he had gotten himself into, he and Echidna had been discovered, soaking in the bloodbath of their own making. The teen braced himself for the harshest of punishments as they were dragged out into the daylight. Some terse words, perhaps even an extra beating thrown in here and there; god knows he had received enough of those for one lifetime. After all, the mess his partner left behind would need answers, and the royal guards of Lugunica were not exactly known for their mercy.

But as luck, or fate, would have it, salvation would indeed arrive, and in the most unexpected of forms possible.

The red-haired knight had appeared with his usual composed grace, his presence commanding the highest of respect simply from his gaze alone. Subaru could still hear Reinhardt's calm but authoritative voice cutting through the tension like soft butter, assessing the situation in moments without a second to waste, and like a flash of thunder, the once difficult situation had been completely diffused. There would be no trial, no interrogation necessary; the Sword Saint had spoken, and his judgment was final.

Subaru hadn't known what to say to Reinhardt. Part of him felt grateful for his last-minute help, but another part of him was strangely repulsed by the hero's perfect image, the one that stood in contrast to the mess Subaru had become. Luckily, or unluckily perhaps, Reinhardt didn't linger for long, offering only a firm nod and a brief exchange of words with Echidna before departing, leaving Subaru with a mixture of relief and unresolved tension.

But there was something else. A thought that emerged in the back of Subaru's mind as they were finally allowed to walk away from the scene: an overwhelming sense of finality. Subaru knew it was coming, but his recent experiences had only cemented the feelings welling up in his mind. Echidna was back, yes, and Subaru could not thank the lords of fate enough for that; however, that still left the question of where to go next. He couldn't stay here, that much was certain, nor did he even want to; he would be more than fine if he never set eyes on this den of bastards ever again. So perhaps that was why, when the dust finally settled, that Subaru and Echidna had made a final decision; one that felt both inevitable and bittersweet. They would leave. Not just the capital, but Lugunica itself.

Subaru could hardly believe it when the words first left his lips. "We can't stay any longer. Let's get out of here. Let's see the world." The weight of the past, the trials he had endured, and the memories of his struggles within the kingdom; it all felt too heavy to carry. He wanted freedom. He wanted to explore, to find a place where he could breathe again. Where he could live in peace. Echidna, to his initial surprise and relief, didn't hesitate with her answer. She was bound to him, after all, and in more ways than one; wherever he goes, she will follow, no matter what.

And so, with everything said and done, Subaru and Echidna got to work with their preparations.

A few days later, with their pasts firmly behind them, the unlikely pair were finally set and ready to depart. Kararagi was their initial destination, a place so far yet so promising, but beyond that the entire world beckoned to them, full of people and places neither of them had ever seen. The plan wasn't rigid; in fact, it was anything but. They would wander, explore, and live without the constraints of the past binding them to any single place.

A few days after that fateful reunion, the pair stood on the edge of the capital, awaiting for the carriage that would take them far from Lugunica's borders. Subaru couldn't help but steal a glance up at the city's towering walls one last time, a mixture of emotions rising and falling in his chest. He felt the faint pull of nostalgia, an echo of the boy who had once stepped into this world with his naive hopes and grand dreams of isekai life. But now, as the carriage approached, a new chapter was about to begin. Subaru wasn't worried, though; with Echidna by his side, he knew that he could rise to the challenge, no matter what this cruel world decided to throw at him.

When they had finally boarded the carriage and had begun to move, Subaru let out a heavy exhale, the weight of everything that had happened now lifting from his shoulders. Echidna shuffled closer to his side, her fur brushing against his arm as they held the other's eyes in a happy yet wordless trance. Yes, he wasn't sure what lay ahead on the path he had chosen, he could never be sure in truth; but for the first time in a long while, he felt a spark of hope in what his new life held for him.

Together, they would explore this world, and hopefully find some of themselves in the process. And with each passing mile, the capital of Lugunica shrank and shrank in the distance, becoming just another chapter in the past; one they were more than ready to leave behind.

Subaru huddled in on himself, trying to conserve his warmth even as the chilling wind seeped through his loose-fitting clothes. The crackling of the campfire was enough to fill the still silence, flickering shadows cast on the swaying grass around them. The warmth of the flames at least offered some comfort against the prickly night air, and Subaru found himself sitting closer to it than usual, watching the embers float upward into the starry sky. The world out here, far from the noise of cities or towns, had a peacefulness that he was slowly getting used to. It wasn't the life he had imagined for himself, but then again, nothing in his life had really gone to plan as of late.

Echidna sat quietly beside him, her white fur almost glowing magically in the firelight, her eyes distant and far off as they both stared into the dancing flames without a word. They had spent several weeks together, wandering the wilds with no set destination in mind, and though the bond between them had certainly grown stronger, they still found themselves in moments like this; quiet, heavy with the weight of unspoken thoughts.

But, eventually, Subaru broke the silence.

"So, what now?" His voice was soft, almost hesitant as if he feared the answer. "We've been wandering for weeks, but… I don't know. It feels like we're just moving without a goal."

Echidna tilted her head, a small smile on her muzzle as she considered his words. "Does there always have to be a goal to chase?"

Subaru shrugged slightly, leaning back against the log they'd dragged near the fire. "I… guess not. But I feel like, I don't know, like I'm still running away from something. That something is missing here."

Echidna's ears flicked slightly, but she remained quiet, letting Subaru's words settle between them. He hadn't spoken much about his feelings since they left Lugunica, but tonight, under the stars and with no distractions, something in him had shifted. It appeared it was time to lay it all out.

"Is it about the time we were separated?"

"In a way," Subaru replied, his eyes narrowing in painful contemplation. "…I really tried, you know? I really, really did." Subaru's voice wavered slightly, the frustration building up with every word. "After you had gone, I thought I could handle it. I thought I could make something of myself, find a way to survive. I had to, Echinda, because I couldn't leave you worrying about me. But, it didn't take long for everything to just… fall apart. I failed, over and over again. Every move, every plan, every step, just when I thought I had secured my footing, it all crumbled in my hands." His hands clenched into fists. "I couldn't even take care of myself, in the end. It was hopeless. And I hate that. I hate that I needed you to come back and save me."

Echidna shifted, turning her gaze away from the fire to Subaru. Her expression was calm, but there was a deep sadness in her eyes. She didn't interrupt, letting him get it all out.

"I wasn't strong enough. I thought I was, after all the time I spent with you, but when it came down to it, I couldn't handle even basic things on my own," Subaru continued, his voice trembling now with self-directed anger. "I'm really am pathetic, aren't I?"

"No, you're not." She leaned closer, her presence both comforting and grounding. "Subaru dear, you didn't fail. You tried your best with what you had. Even at the darkest moment, you never gave up, even when your life seemed forfeit. No one can ask for more than that."

Subaru shook his head curtly, not wanting to accept her words. "But it wasn't enough!"

"Subaru," she countered softly, her eyes locking with his. "You are still young, and the world is forever cruel. No, the truth is, it wasn't your fault at all. In fact… it was mine."

"What?" Subaru replied, his eyebrow cocked upwards in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

Echidna sighed, her eyes drifting back to the smoldering fire. "For leaving you behind. I believed that there was a grander calling for me, something that required abandoning what we had. I convinced myself that my quest was more significant, and that I would move on from what we had. That it would lead to something bigger. But…"

Her voice grew quieter, almost a whisper. Subaru stared at her, waiting for the spirit to continue, his heart sinking as he listened on.

"It took the encouragement of my siblings for me to see the light. They could see how unsure I was of my goal, of the longing clinging to my soul. They told me… to let it go. To grasp what I truly wanted from life, and to not be shackled by the tragedies of the past. It was then that I realized… how much time I had I spent focusing on the wrong things." Echidna sighed, her voice heavy with regret. "Over and over, I had kept telling myself that I needed to complete my mission, for every waking second I could. It was my destiny, the role I was deigned to fulfill; something I was made to do."

Subaru's brow furrowed. "Echidna, I don't… understand what you're trying to say here…?"

"I realized that everything I was chasing, all this time… it was all meaningless," she explained, her gaze distant, as though she were seeing something far away. "The answers I sought, the ending I wished to achieve, it wasn't what I needed. What I truly needed was already there, right in front of me. And I had thrown it away like it was nothing."

Subaru's breath caught in his throat. He knew what she was trying to say, but hearing it straight from her felt impossibly different from what he was expecting. He felt a strange tightness in his chest, a mix of emotions that he couldn't quite untangle.

"And, in the end, I only failed you, Subaru," Echidna said softly, her voice almost breaking as she finally turned his way. "I should never have left your side. My pride blinded me to the truth, so many times, but… you were the one thing in my life that gave me meaning, so long after I forgot the meaning of the word. I hurt you because of my own foolishness. I'm sorry."

The two held the other's eyes for a beat, the teen at a loss for anything to say in response. For so long, he had blamed himself for his own shortcomings, believing that he alone was responsible for the endpoint of his fate. But now, listening to Echidna's confession, he could feel the weight of his self-loathing seem to lift from his shoulders, even if just a little bit.

"You didn't fail me, Echidna," he whispered quietly. "You came back."

Echidna's eyes widened, her irises shimmering with barely-held tears as she looked at him.

"Yes, I did come back," " she finally said. "And I will never leave you again. Not now, not ever."

Subaru hadn't noticed the spirit slowly climbing into his lap, her breathing labored and eyes half-lidded with desire. He hadn't noticed how she had pressed her body snugly against his, how the welcoming scent of her fur was gently tickling his nostrils. He hadn't noticed that he himself wasn't breathing, that the world around him had seemed to fall away. No, he couldn't have noticed any of these things, for at this moment none of it mattered. All that mattered, to him, was the soft feeling of her lips pressed hungrily against his, how her tongue had wrapped around his own like a coiling snake, how he could feel the vibrations of her purrs and moans skittering down his back.

"Subaru… dear…" the vixen mewled, the teen wasting no time in reconnecting their awaiting mouths, the spirit growing more and more restless as their session grew more heated. By the time they had separated once more, the teen had noticed he was lying on his back, the spirit straddling him with her warm body as she looked down on him, love shining pure in her black irises.

"You have no idea, do you…?" she purred, leaning in to give the boy a quick lick. "Of how I longed for this. The dreams I've had of you, my boy. And now that we're here, I don't want to wait. I can't wait. I need to make up for all that lost time. The question is, do you?"

"Echidna," Subaru laughed lightly, "…I know that I'm… not much 0f anything, and you would probably be better off with someone else. But, I can at least promise you this: from the bottom of my heart, I will give you everything I have and more. If you believe in me to this extent, then… I don't think I could ever refuse you."

The vixen grew quiet, the night air beginning to howl around her as the silence dragged on.

"Subaru."

"…Yes?"

"Shut up and fuck me."

Subaru blinked, momentarily stunned at Echidna's sudden switch to delinquent mode. But, luckily for him, and her, Subaru was a gentleman, and gentlemen are always quick on their feet when it comes to the ladies. With growing excitement, the boy began stripping off his pants, the spirit lifting herself slightly to allow the boy to finish the deed. Once that was done, and his straining pole was raised to attention in the darkness, the spirit wasted no time in taking back her position, the teen shuddering in anticipation as he felt his member brush against her blushing flower, his hands dug in tightly in the fur of her haunches as she lined herself into prime position.

"Echidna," Subaru mumbled, a jovial smile on his face. "I know that you're eager, but make sure you don't… break anything?"

Echidna flashed him an amused smile, shimmying her hips a little as his eager tip ground deeper into her awaiting hole.

"Hmm… we'll see."

And with that, the vixen impaled herself on his stick, his member jutting into her walls as the two bodies crashed into each other. Subaru yelped in shocked surprise, the feeling of his partner's warm insides a dearly missed sensation after that one romp many months ago. Yes, he was longing for this too, why wouldn't he? Echidna, for her part, seemed to still be adjusting, the boy still a bit bigger than what she was built for, but the fox couldn't care less at this point, and neither could he; they were connected, finally, after so long of being apart. This was something they had dearly missed, and they were not about to let it go ever again.

"Ah, Subaru… you feel so good inside of me…" the vixen moaned, her walls squeezing around his flesh in tandem as her juices trailed down his length. The two lovers were squished together like sardines, neither wanting to move even an inch from this feeling of connectedness. It wasn't long before their lips were mashed together once more, the boy's hands trailing down her sides and behind as the spirit slowly lifted herself up, the teen's member shivering with the touch of the cool wind, before being engulfed once more by sickening warmth as it was sucked in by those wanting walls once again.

"Ah, Echidna…" Subaru gasped, his eyes rolling into the back of his head as his member was given a firm squeeze. "I never… want this to end…"

"Mnm, me neither, Subaru…" she replied, another movement of her hips sending them to cloud nine once more. "Me neither…"

It was slow, but it was perfect as far as they were concerned. A rhythm that was at once both familiar and novel, their collective moans and gasps growing heavier and heavier as they sought to satisfy the hunger inside that had been festering for far too long. Each thrust and retreat, each press and squeeze, each touch and kiss, it was a symphony of passion that had run silent for so long, and now it sang louder than any choir. The night was young, and they had an eternity to make up for. It was as if the stars above were gazing down upon their frenzied lovemaking, twinkling with silent approval as if this very moment had been foretold since the dawn of time itself. And with every new thrust, every passing second they remained connected, Subaru could feel the pain of his past slowly, but surely, being washed away. And he knew then, in his heart, that he had finally been reborn anew, an eternal partner by his side that he would never lose, even past the finality of death.

"Subara, oh Subaru!" Echidna whispered drunkenly into his ear, her hips jerking with urgent passion. "I love you, I love you so much!"

"Echidna, I love you too," he murmured back, his voice strained thin with snowballing pleasure.

And with those final words, the dam could hold no more. The two of them threw rising roars into the sky as they rode out their climaxes, boy and spirit convulsing together in a shower of pure, unbridled ecstasy. Subaru's seed filled her to near bursting, a torrent with seemingly no end, their love becoming one in the most primal of ways as they held each other tightly, their hearts beating as one.

As they lay there, panting and exhausted in the light of the full moon, Subaru felt a newfound sense of purpose stir within him. He knew that their journey was far from over, but with Echidna at his side, he was ready to tackle whatever the world had in store.

"Thank you, Echidna," he whispered, pressing a kiss to her furry cheek.

"Thank you, Subaru dear," she replied, her voice filled with emotion. "For never giving up. For coming back to me. For always being yourself, even when I don't deserve it."

Subaru held her close, feeling the warmth of her body seeping into his own, and whispered into her ear, "We're in this together now, forever."

And as they drifted off into the welcoming embrace of sleep, their futures were as open and vast as the night sky above, endless possibilities stretched before them.
