As the sun dipped below the horizon on the resort planet of Valtira VI, its golden rays surrendered to the encroaching darkness, painting the lush surroundings in hues of deep purple and blue. The sounds of laughter and music from the nearby beach bars faded, leaving an eerie stillness in the air. Helmsman Athryriass Sh'rhaothrir, known as Arisa, adjusted her tricorder with a small huff as she surveyed the quiet pathways winding through the resort's exotic flora with her companion, the Orion engineer T'Vora. Day two of searching for the missing captain was drawing to a close, and there was still no sign of her.
"Are you sure we should be splitting up like this," T'Vora spoke up, her emerald skin gleaming in the dim light as the Orion female glanced around the mostly deserted pathway. "This place may look like paradise, but after what happened to Captain Vevva, I don't trust anyone. This place is giving me the creeps."
"We have to cover more ground. Captain Vevva wouldn't want us to waste time," Arisa replied, her voice steady but edged with worry. "If she's out there, we need to find her before it's too late."
"I understand, but the Titana crew doesn't seem to be taking this seriously. They've been less than helpful," T'Vora said, crossing her arms.
Arisa nodded, glancing at the two members of the Titana's crew, Lt. Doran and Ensign Kallix, who stood a few paces away, their eyes scanning the surroundings with a mix of boredom and indifference. "We're doing what we can. We can't give up hope."
As the shadows deepened, the atmosphere shifted, and a tense silence enveloped them. The distant sounds of laughter and music from the resort faded away, leaving only the rustling of leaves and the soft hum of the night the further they walked away from the main resort building.
"Let's check near the beach next," Arisa suggested, trying to keep the group focused. "If she's anywhere, it would be near the water. Captain Vevva loves the ocean."
Just as they were about to move, a sudden rustle in the bushes caught Arisa's attention. Her antennae perked up, sensing the shift in the air. The two Titana crewmen exchanged glances, their demeanor shifting from bored to alert. Arisa's instincts screamed at her, and she felt a chill run down her spine. "Something's not right…"
Before she could finish her thought, shadows leaped from the trees. The two Titana crewmembers lunged at them, their faces twisted with malice. T'Vora's scream pierced the air as she fought back, but Arisa was already grappling with Doran, who had turned on her with a ferocity that took her by surprise.
"Doran, what are you doing?" She shouted, struggling against his grip.
"Sorry, Arisa. Orders," He grunted, his hands tightening around her throat.
In the chaos, T'Vora was quickly overwhelmed by Kallix, who had produced a weapon from the folds of his uniform. Arisa's vision blurred as she kicked and flailed, trying to break free, but Doran's strength was too much. She felt a sharp pain at the back of her head, and the world went black.
When T'Vora came to, it was to the sound of silence. T'Vora blinked against the dim light, trying to piece together what had happened. Her surroundings were quiet, the faint rustle of leaves whispering secrets she could not decipher. She pushed herself up, wincing as pain shot through her side. Her gear was missing, and the familiar weight of her tools and communicator was conspicuously absent. Panic surged as she realized she was alone.
No answer.
The memories came rushing back—Doran's betrayal, Kallix's attack. She struggled to stand, her legs unsteady beneath her and scanned the area. The lush vegetation of Valtira VI had transformed into a wild, tangled maze, and the distant sounds of the resort's revelry had faded into an unsettling silence. But there was no sign of her comrades, no hint of where they had been taken. Her gear was gone, leaving her vulnerable and exposed.
With determination, T'Vora took a cautious step forward, her heart pounding in her chest. Each sound seemed amplified—the crunch of twigs beneath her feet, the rustle of unseen creatures in the underbrush. She had to find Arisa and the others. They had to be nearby.
Suddenly, she froze. A figure emerged from the shadows, cloaked in darkness. T'Vora's breath caught in her throat as she prepared herself for a confrontation. But it was just a local animal, darting away into the foliage. Her shoulders dropped slightly, but the tension in her muscles remained.
"Think, T'Vora," she muttered to herself. "You need to find a way back."
As she moved cautiously through the underbrush, memories of her engineering training flickered in her mind. She was an Orion, resourceful and resilient. She couldn't let fear consume her. She needed to focus on finding help, getting back to her ship, and, hopefully, rescuing Captain Vevva.
