The tense hum of the USS Arsenal's bridge was a poor mask for the anxiety gripping its crew. For three standard days, Captain Hayvna Vevva had been missing. Scans showed faint transporter inhibitors and signs of a struggle, but yielded no perpetrator, no demands, only a chilling void where their Captain should be.
Commander S'Nira paced before the command chair. Her yellow eyes flickered between the main viewscreen showing Valtira VI and the tactical display tracking the sluggish patrol pattern of the USS Titana. "Report," She clipped out, her voice sounding weary.
"No change, Commander," the Ops officer replied, his voice tight. "Planetary scans negative for unauthorized departures. The Titana maintains its designated search grid... at minimal speed."
S'Nira's tail twitched slightly, betraying her frustration. Captain Alarix's assistance felt deliberately measured, wrapped in layers of protocol while her Captain was missing. They needed more help; the Enterprise was en route, reassigned by Starfleet Command, but projections placed its arrival at least twelve hours away. Twelve hours felt like an eternity.
"Commander!" Lt. Grodame sat bolt upright. "Priority One channel opening – Admiral Xavier Alegre."
S'Nira was in the command chair instantly. "On screen."
Admiral Alegre's face materialized, etched with a deeper concern than usual. "Commander S'Nira. Update on Captain Vevva's status, please."
"Admiral," S'Nira reported, keeping her voice even. "Captain Vevva remains missing. Evidence indicates a forcible abduction. Our efforts, nominally assisted by the USS Titana, have found nothing conclusive. We...also have 2 search teams unaccounted for."
Alegre absorbed the report, his expression grim. "Any demands? Any indication of who might be responsible?"
"Negative on both counts, Admiral."
The Admiral paused, looking older than his years. He leaned slightly closer to his console pickup. "Commander... what I'm about to tell you is highly classified. It does not leave this room, understood? Not a word logged, not a whisper outside this bridge. The security implications are... significant."
S'Nira straightened, sensing the gravity. Her ears flattened slightly. "Understood, Admiral. Bridge personnel acknowledge." A quiet murmur of assent came from the nearby stations and several people left the room, leaving behind the main Bridge crew.
Alegre took a breath. "Good. Commander, Captain Vevva has lived under an assumed identity for most of her life. Her mother was Captain Laura Harkness, commanding officer of the USS Galaxia. Laura was a friend." Pain flickered in his eyes. "Her father was David Harkness, a civilian engineer."
He let the names hang in the air. "Nearly fifteen years ago, David Harkness betrayed the Federation. He sold secrets, technology... He became radicalized, blaming Starfleet and Laura for perceived grievances. When he defected, he made it personal. He targeted Laura and their daughter, Hayvna."
S'Nira felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach. T'lirri, drawn by the Admiral's grave tone, had stepped onto the bridge, her Vulcan composure a stark contrast to the horrifying story unfolding.
"Laura and Hayvna were separated," Alegre continued, his voice low. "Placed in deep protective custody. Hayvna was given the identity 'Vevva' for her safety. But David was relentless. He eventually located Laura... and orchestrated the attack that destroyed the Galaxia. He killed her." The Admiral's jaw clenched. "And he vowed he wasn't done. He swore he would find and eliminate Hayvna, claiming she 'knew too much' about his operations."
The pieces slammed into place with brutal clarity. The sophisticated abduction. The lack of ransom. The personal vendetta.
"But, that's impossible! We were all told that the Romulans, the same ones that attacked the USS Kelvin, were responsible. Admiral," S'Nira breathed, her voice barely a whisper but sharp with dawning horror. "Are you telling us... it was her father? David Harkness kidnapped her?"
"All intelligence suggests it's the highest probability, Commander," Alegre confirmed grimly.
A wave of cold fury washed over S'Nira, her professional restraint warring with the protective instinct she felt for her Captain. Beside her, T'lirri stood perfectly still, but S'Nira could almost feel the logical barricades straining against the onslaught of raw emotion – fear for Hayvna, and a burning, focused anger towards the man named David Harkness.
Just as the weight of the revelation settled, the Ops officer cried out, "Commander! High-velocity warp signature detected! Starfleet transponder confirmed... It's the Enterprise, Commander! NCC-1701-A! They're here – way ahead of schedule!"
All eyes snapped to the viewscreen as the vast, powerful shape of the Constitution-class Enterprise-A materialized from warp, dominating the starfield above Valtira VI. Its arrival, hours before expected, sent a jolt of hope through the bridge.
A clear, confident voice cut through the comms. "USS Arsenal, this is Captain Kirk of the USS Enterprise-A. Admiral Alegre brought us up to speed on your situation while we were en route. Looks like we made good time. We're here to help get your Captain back."
The arrival of the Federation flagship and its famous captain offered a powerful surge of reassurance, but it was violently curtailed. The comm panel immediately chirped again, an emergency channel flooding the bridge with static and panicked shouting.
"Bridge, this is Search Team Delta! Emergency!" The voice was choked with grief and the strain of exertion. "We've located Search Team Gamma's and Beta's last position... Commander, it's... gods, it's an ambush site!" A ragged breath. "We've found Engineer T'Vora – she's alive, but badly injured! Requesting immediate combat evac for T'Vora!"
"Acknowledged, Delta!" S'Nira snapped, hope instantly replaced by icy dread as she turned around to see that Dr. T'lirri had already left the Bridge. "Report status of the rest of Teams Gamma and Beta!"
"Security Officers Davies and Chen from Search Team Beta are gone, Commander," the voice from Delta returned, thick with sorrow. "Confirmed KIA. Signs of a major firefight. Search Team Gamma is missing 3 officers!"
"Lieutenant Sh'rhaothrir?" S'Nira demanded, her heart sinking as she knew the Andorian was leading that team.
"She's not here, Commander," Delta reported grimly. "No body... but evidence of a fierce struggle near her position. Her phaser's discarded. Lieutenant Athryriass Sh'rhaothrir has been captured."
The bridge fell silent, the brief hope ignited by the Enterprise's arrival extinguished by the brutal reality. Two officers dead, an engineer critically injured, and now their Helmsman taken, joining their Captain in the hands of a ruthless traitor. David Harkness wasn't just hiding; he was actively dismantling the Arsenal's crew. The mission to save Captain Vevva had just escalated into a far deadlier conflict.
