Chapter 22. Golden Kitchen Whispers
Lilly and Agnes glided through the warm kitchen with determined grace. The room basked in the soft, golden hues of the setting sun, casting a radiant glow over the weathered wooden countertops. A symphony of aromatic herbs and spices mingled in the air, hinting at the culinary delight to come. As Agnes excused herself to fetch fresh vegetables from the cellar, Jacob strode in with an air of confidence that electrified the atmosphere.
"Ah, I've finally unearthed a potato peeler" Lilly playfully quipped, her eyes twinkling with mischief. Jacob's grin was infectious as he raised his hands in mock surrender. "Trust me, cooking isn't exactly my strong suit," he admitted with a charming smile. "Oh really? Isn't Sir Jacob Frye supposed to excel at everything?" Lilly teased, her eyes dancing with mirth. Jacob's response was swift and mischievous, his grin adding to his charm. "Feel free to sample my cooking if you dare, but beware, my sister might strongly advise against it," he quipped.
Leaning casually against the countertop, Lilly's laughter mingled with the comforting aromas wafting through the air. "I think I'll take my chances with your culinary skills. How bad could it be? It's not like you'll poison me… intentionally?" she challenged playfully, raising an eyebrow. Stepping closer, Jacob's hazel eyes sparkled with mischief as he leaned beside her, their shoulders lightly brushing. "Oh, poison? My dear Lilly, please! I'm far too charming for such mundane tactics! Why settle for a mere dose of death when I can serve you a dish so dreadful you'll wish you had?" he quipped with a cheeky grin. The closeness between them sent a delightful shiver down Lilly's spine, though she maintained her composure effortlessly.
A weighty quiet settled between them, threading a fragile tension through the air, rekindling the sorrow in Jacob's eyes. Lilly turned her gaze towards him, her expression shifting into one of gentle concern. "Jacob, what's weighing on your heart?" she asked softly, her voice a comforting melody. "I sensed your unease earlier, and it seems to linger." Jacob's eyes drifted downwards heavily, his brow creasing with profound melancholy. "After the rush of anticipating our foes' downfall, the reality of your departure hit me," he confessed, his tone revealing a whirlwind of emotions. "I thought about the life awaiting you beyond all this... a life with Martha. And then it dawned on me—how deeply I'll miss you."
Lilly's heart fluttered in response to his words, a gentle warmth spreading through her. Turning towards Jacob, she found him still looking down, a flicker of vulnerability in his gaze. "The truth is... I've treasured your presence for longer than I can say, and the mere thought of you departing fills me with an ache," he admitted softly. Tenderly, Lilly reached out, her hand finding its place on his arm, coaxing his intense gaze to meet hers where her emerald eyes shimmered with profound emotion. "What are you saying?" she whispered, the rhythm of her heart matching a wild melody. "I believe I'm falling for you, Lilly," he confessed in a hushed tone, sincerity evident in his voice.
Their gazes locked, a mere whisper apart. The closeness between them ignited her pulse, the mingling of their breaths creating an intoxicating warmth. With the last threads of restraint unravelling, she yielded to her longing, leaning in until their lips met in a tender caress that sparked a wildfire of sensations. A rush of heat surged through her as the kiss deepened, carrying with it years of suppressed desire. Jacob, equally ensnared by the whirlwind of emotion, matched her intensity. His fingers urgently traced through her hair before delicately grazing the nape of her neck, the touch sending shivers down Lilly's spine. Lost in the profound connection between them, Jacob gently lifted Lilly onto the edge of the kitchen counter, planting soft kisses along her exposed neck. In response to his growing fervour, she arched back as his kisses grew more urgent. Her hands tangled passionately in his hair, pulling him closer with a vigour that sought to merge their souls into one.
The door swung open with a resounding bang as Agnes re-entered, her eyes widening in disbelief. "Oh!" she gasped, causing Jacob and Lilly to spring apart as if shocked. "I'll come back later," Agnes stammered nervously, cheeks flushed with embarrassment as she awkwardly retreated, swiftly closing the door behind her. Lilly's face turned crimson as she slid off the counter in a flustered state. Their gazes locked, a shared moment of surprise giving way to unrestrained laughter that echoed through the cosy kitchen, dispelling any lingering awkwardness. Jacob's grin, filled with mischief, illuminated his features as he teasingly asked, "Which room is yours?" Lilly felt a rush of renewed excitement at his question, a hint of forbidden allure sparking between them. "You are incorrigible," she replied with a mix of amusement and exhilaration, attempting to smooth down her tousled hair. "Perhaps," he murmured softly, stepping closer, his eyes ablaze with an intensity that made Lilly's heart race like thundering hooves in her chest. "But I'm eager to pick up where we left off..." "You scoundrel!" Lilly exclaimed breathlessly, mischief dancing in her eyes as she took his hand and gracefully moved backward towards the door, inviting him to follow in a flirtatious dance of seduction.
Evie slipped into the bustling kitchen, her steps drowned by clattering pots and pans. Agnes, at the centre, radiated frustration with muttered words and a furrowed brow. Sensing Evie, she straightened abruptly, annoyance evident in her sharp movements. "Is everything alright, Agnes?" Evie's tone was gentle, trying to ease the tension. Agnes sighed curtly, hands deftly moving around the kitchen. "Aye, I'm just fine and dandy getting on wi' all this meself!" she retorted with exasperation. Pouring water into a glass, Evie probed further, "Wasn't Lilly supposed to lend you a hand?" Agnes's eyes darted before settling back on Evie with disdain and resignation. "She's off gallivantin' for a wee bit o' amorous congress wi' that fancy-pants brother of yours," Agnes grumbled disapprovingly.
Evie's throat tightened in surprise at Agnes' revelation as she took a sip of water and nearly choked in astonishment. "Amorous congress you say?" Evie managed, her voice slightly hoarse from the water. "And there I was thinking your upset was due to another culinary mishap courtesy of my dear brother's questionable cooking abilities."
Agnes rolled her eyes; lips pressed together to suppress an amused smile. "If only it were that simple," she muttered. "Och, but it's clear as day that laddie's got more than just cookin' skills on his mind. Thinks he can swagger in here and whisk Lilly off her feet like some daft prince frae them shite novels."
"I see," Evie smirked slightly. "Well, I believe I can assist you." With purpose, she strode towards the cupboard to gather the dinner plates. "It seems we'll require two fewer plates for this evening," she declared with a subtle smile playing on her lips.
The final whispers of daylight surrendered to the night, wrapping the room in a tender twilight that transformed from a gentle rosy pink to a deep, velvety purple beyond the windowpane. Lilly gracefully sat up on the bed, pulling the sheet close to her heart. Her eyes, like windows to her soul, were lost in the enchanting dance of the darkening sky. Jacob lay reclined amongst the pillows, mesmerized by the ethereal glow that adorned her delicate features, each line and curve painted by the fading light as if she were a living masterpiece. In that tender moment, he saw her not just as beautiful but as one of the most enchanting beings to ever grace his world. His fingers entwined with hers, and as she turned to meet his gaze with her mesmerizing emerald eyes, he asked softly, "What's on your mind?" A playful, loving smile graced his lips as he teased, "Did I fail to impress?"
Lilly's laughter, a melodic symphony, filled the air, her cheeks still flushed from their earlier adventures. "I suppose you've barely passed the test," she retorted with a playful glint in her eye. Jacob's grin broadened at her banter. "Oh really? Well then, I must rectify that." He gently pulled her onto his lap as he sat up straight, and they shared a moment of intimacy, losing themselves in a prolonged, passionate kiss. His insistence almost distracted Lilly from her troubled thoughts. However, as they drew apart, a fleeting shadow crossed her features once more. Jacob, perceptive as ever, caught the change in her expression—a subtle nuance that spoke volumes. "What troubles you?" he inquired again with a soothing touch.
Her gaze shifted back to his, a soft sigh escaping her lips. "It's... it's the path that lies ahead," she whispered, her lower lip caught gently between her teeth as she carefully chose her words. "This mission—it's fraught with danger, Jacob. I'm afraid... I'm afraid for you." Her voice trembled with a raw vulnerability that hung heavy in the air. Sensing her fear, Jacob drew her close onto the soft pillows beside him, his hand tenderly cradling her cheek. "Don't fret, Lilly," Jacob reassured her, his voice unwavering and calm as he caressed her delicate skin with his thumb. "I assure you, I've braved challenges far greater than a room teeming with Templars. I have a few tricks up my sleeve." Lilly rested her head on his chest, finding little solace in the steady rhythm of his heartbeat as he continued to comfort her.
Lilly's eyes shimmered with a deepening turmoil as she shifted onto her back, her gaze fixating on a distant, invisible threat. "But this isn't just about Templars," she murmured, her voice tinged with concern. "There's more at risk here than you realize. And that Hunter... he exudes danger like no other, fixated on you, Jacob." The thought of Hunter sent shivers down her spine, a stark contrast to the warmth she radiated.
Jacob's expression turned sombre as he raised himself up slightly, resting on one elbow to look directly into her eyes. "I can handle Hunter," he remarked casually, but his confidence unsettled Lilly. "Jacob!" Her voice quivered with a mix of emotions at his nonchalant response; tears glistened in her eyes. "You need to grasp the danger Hunter represents, the cruelty he's already inflicted on those I held dear."
Jacob's heart clenched at the concern etched on her face, a poignant echo of the harrowing losses she endured. Her voice quivered as she confessed, "In the library, I came across a tome about the Templar Hunters," she paused to sniffle, "and I wish I hadn't..." Her fears hung heavily in the air, leaving him torn between his mission and her fears.
With a tender gesture, he reached out to tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear, his touch lingering briefly in reassurance. "I understand the threat Hunter poses," he murmured softly, trying to allay her fears. "But know this - I won't face him alone. With Evie's strategic brilliance, Henry's unwavering support, and George's steadfast loyalty by my side, it will be Hunter trembling in fear."
In a moment of urgency, Lilly enveloped him in a tight embrace, seeking solace against his chest. Her warm breath brushed over him as she whispered fervently, "Promise me you'll return." Jacob's calloused hand, weathered from countless escapades, gently caressed her hair before trailing down her back. Pulling her closer with a comforting squeeze, he vowed with unwavering resolve, "I give you my word."
Evie and Agnes were putting away the dinner plates when Jacob sauntered into the room. He stole a quick glance at their backs and moved swiftly towards the small larder, the patter of his bare feet barely discernible on the ceramic tiled floor. Evie exchanged a sly glance with Agnes, concluding it was the perfect moment to get back at her impudent twin for all his smug remarks. "Ah, dear brother," Evie announced in a deliberately loud tone, "It seems we missed you for dinner..." Jacob emerged from behind the door, closing it with a swift kick before depositing a large loaf of bread and a chunk of cheese on the kitchen counter. With a roguish grin, he snatched a clean plate from Evie's hands just as she was about to place it in the cupboard, trying to ruffle her feathers. "Something I'm about to rectify," he retorted casually, grabbing a knife and aligning it with the loaf of bread.
Evie flashed a sly smile at Agnes before leaning in with a playful tone, "Have you by chance seen Lilly?" The question caught Jacob off guard; he fumbled with the knife, his fingers betraying him with a slight tremor. "Looks like she's abandoned her duties for reasons unknown," Evie continued, her grin widening as she revelled in Jacob's evident unease. "Are you feeling alright, dear brother? You seem a bit... dishevelled tonight." She gestured at his wild hair and crooked shirt buttons, amusement dancing in her eyes. "I'm perfectly fine..." Jacob blurted out, hastily grabbing the plate as if it could shield him from their teasing gaze. He made a beeline for the door, desperate to escape their playful jabs when Agnes chimed in mischievously, "Och, bread and cheese, laddie? Are you quite sure the lass wouldn't fancy some proper meat and vegetables instead?" A loud clatter echoed from the hallway, prompting laughter to bubble up from both women in unison.
