Chapter 24. The Hunter and the Prey
Lilly's body tensed, a symphony of fear and determination playing within her. Her heart raced as she propelled herself forward, sprinting towards the shattered entrance. As the impending confrontation unfolded before her, her eyes widened in dread, feeling a cold shiver cascade down her spine like icy fingers. Consumed by a suffocating sense of anxiety, her breaths came in shallow gasps, each one a battle against the fear tightening its grip on her heart for Jacob. "Come on, young crow," Hunter's voice sliced through the air with calculated precision, each syllable laden with an ominous edge. His words lingered ominously, a silent dare challenging Jacob to respond impulsively. "Or maybe I'll take pleasure in plucking your beloved crow whore instead," he taunted, his voice dripping with venomous intent. "She's a captivating one... I'll savour that moment when your breath fails."
Jacob's every muscle strained against the impulse to strike out, his body a coiled spring of controlled power as he deftly guided Hunter away from the vulnerable threshold of the house. He understood that any hasty move on his part could imperil the escape of those under his protection. In his heightened state, amidst the tense dance of danger, he caught the faint rustle of leaves and snapping twigs, a silent symphony signalling the stealthy retreat of his young companions into the protective embrace of the dense undergrowth.
In an instant, chaos threatened to consume order. Jack, unaware of the escalating threat swirling around them, caught sight of Jacob through the twisted branches and dashed towards him with reckless childlike urgency. The boy's cry for Jacob hung in the air before the Assassins urgent command sliced through it like a blade. "Jack, STOP!"
Hunter's predatory instincts ignited instantly, a primal force propelling him towards Jack with a swiftness that almost made Jacob's heart stop. Panic gripped the Assassin as adrenaline surged through him, his hand trembling as he fired his pistol in haste. The bullet grazed Hunter's shoulder, causing a momentary pause in his advance, though the determination in his gaze remained unyielding. With a muttered curse, Jacob realized the futility of trying to hit Hunter at such speed without risking harm to Jack. Driven by urgency, he hurled himself recklessly at the target of his fears in a desperate attempt to shield the boy from danger.
Lilly's heart raced in rhythm with the imminent threat Hunter posed, her apprehension almost tangible as she discerned his deadly purpose. Fuelled by a surge of adrenaline, she dashed towards Jack, a delicate figure amidst the turmoil. Each breath seemed like a defiance against the clutches of fear, her movements creating a protective barrier and whisking him to safety just in the nick of time. Hunter turned with the fluidity of a prowling predator, his advance swift and exact. Pausing momentarily to steady himself, his eyes sparkled with an icy resolve; lifting his rifle, he took aim at Lilly and Jack with chilling precision.
A piercing cry tore through the twilight, a lament of anguish that hung heavy in the air. Hunter's lips curled into a sly grin, his weapon poised with deadly precision as he turned it on Jacob. With a calculated move, he pulled the trigger. The gunshot echoed sharply through the chaos but Jacob's movements were a graceful ballet of evasion; he narrowly avoided the bullet, feeling its searing touch graze his cheek, leaving a fiery trail behind. In one fluid motion, he sprang upwards. His fingers clenched around his pistol like a vice as he brought it crashing down on Hunter's forehead with savage intensity. The jarring impact reverberated with a sickening crunch, sending Hunter reeling backward in disarray.
"LEAVE NOW!" Jacob's voice pierced the air, a mix of urgency and desperation aimed at Lilly. Without hesitation, he spun around to strike at his adversary once more, only to find Hunter already one step ahead. In a blur of movement, Hunter intercepted the attack, landing a powerful blow to Jacob's midsection that left him gasping for air. Despite bracing himself, the impact was enough to stagger him. Seizing the moment, Hunter expertly disarmed Jacob with precision. "Let's spice things up a bit, shall we?" Hunter taunted as he casually tossed both firearms behind him with a sneer.
Jacob's arms instinctively rose to shield himself from Hunter's onslaught of punches. The resounding clash of metal meeting flesh reverberated through the air, each strike punctuating the grim intensity of their struggle. Hunter's bare fists relentlessly pounded against Jacob's gauntlet, the bone-crushing impact fuelling his primal fury. With a swift and calculated move, Jacob lunged forward, his leg sweeping out like a scythe, catching Hunter off guard and sending him crashing onto his back with savage force. Seizing the moment, Jacob leaped upon Hunter, swiftly unsheathing his hidden blade with deadly precision, aiming it unwaveringly at his opponent's throat with a fierce resolve.
Hunter surged with a fierce energy, seizing control of the situation with swift precision. In one fluid motion, he gripped Jacob's wrists, flipping him over with a powerful efficiency that completely reversed their positions. Asserting absolute dominance, Hunter forcefully drove Jacob's gauntlet-covered hand into the unyielding ground with unwavering resolve. His other hand tightened around the Assassin's throat like an unrelenting vice, radiating a chilling determination. Amidst the urgency of the moment, Jacob lunged with a frantic punch from his free hand, but Hunter effortlessly evaded the attack with calculated grace.
Desperation clawed at Jacob, urging him to break free from the suffocating grip. Laughter, laced with madness, spilled from Hunter's lips as he leaned in, adding more pressure to the hold. Gasping for air amidst Lilly's piercing cries, Jacob's resolve solidified. With a surge of courage, his fingers scrambled until they closed around a nearby stone. Heart thundering in his chest, Jacob fixed his gaze on Hunter's temple and unleashed all his pent-up strength in one swift motion. The stone struck true with a resounding thud, causing Hunter to reel back, clutching his head in disoriented agony. Staggering and momentarily dazed by the unexpected blow.
Struggling for breath, Jacob's chest heaved as he tried to rise, but a brutal strike to his ribs sent him crashing down. Agony lanced through his side as Hunter relentlessly pressed on with his attack. Each punishing kick forced Jacob into a defensive curl, his arm and gauntlet desperately shielding his head from the onslaught. Amidst the whirlwind of pain, a torrent of thoughts flooded his mind, silently urging him to stand. "Is that the best you can do, young crow?" Hunter taunted, his voice thick with malice as he roughly gripped the hood of Jacob's coat and effortlessly hoisted him up. In a seamless motion, Jacob unsheathed his kukri blade with deadly accuracy. Riding the force of Hunter's pull, he unleashed a fierce slash that cleaved through Hunter's chest in a raw display of primal energy, tearing cloth and flesh in an act of defiance. Stumbling back, Hunter clutched at the wound, blood staining his fingers as rage burned in his eyes fixed on the Assassin.
Breathing heavily, Jacob braced himself against the manor wall; crimson droplets slid down his chin in a macabre cadence. A fierce resolve flickered in his gaze as he pushed away from the stone, his kukri glinting with a foreboding aura, ready to face the imminent clash head-on. "COME ON!" Hunter roared, smoothly slipping his fingers into the chilling embrace of brass knuckles, primed for the brutal battle to rage on.
The Assassin's dispersed like well-oiled clockwork, each member strategically taking position to cloak the station's vastness. Initiates stood guard at the edges, ready to intercept any lurking scouts. Evie, a picture of grace and determination, glided effortlessly on a zipline to the rooftop, her senses honed in on locating Hunter or Annie. The crisp air carried subtle echoes, leading her to pinpoint Annie's voice resonating from an opulent train carriage. Annie's imperious commands rang out with chilling authority as she directed one of her loyal followers.
Henry and George appeared beside Evie with the grace of shadows, their quiet presence offering a sense of unwavering support. "I've located Annie," Evie whispered to them, her words barely audible in the stillness. Searching the depths below, she questioned, "And Hunter?"
George's voice carried a hint of exasperation as he responded, "Hunter remains elusive. Your keen sight evades us; he might be leveraging darkness to cloak his movements."
Evie's keen eyes scanned the train car, meticulously seeking any sign of the man's whereabouts. "I expected Hunter to be at Annie's side, yet he remains hidden. Be vigilant; I will confront Annie. If Hunter emerges, we shall stand together," she declared with resolute determination. Beneath her composed façade, a subtle unease tugged at her thoughts about Hunter's prolonged absence.
"I'll keep watch over the northern section of the station," Henry whispered, his tone a soothing presence. "George, cover the southern side." With silent understanding, George melded into the shadows seamlessly. Just before Henry followed suit, he tenderly rested his hand on Evie's arm. "Stay safe," he murmured softly, his concern evident in his voice, before disappearing to scout ahead.
After the Templar's departure, Evie glided down into the station like a shadow, her movements as silent as whispers in the dark. Each step she took exuded a ghostly elegance, reminiscent of a spectre haunting the night. With a practiced ease born of years of training, she closed in on the train carriage, her presence shrouded in the cloak of stealth that defined her very being.
Annie reclined in the lavish chamber, her eyes locked on the door, a sense of eager anticipation bubbling within her. The opulence of the carriage was undeniable, with its polished mahogany furniture and plush carpets that whispered luxury underfoot. A reverent silence descended as Evie's form emerged at the threshold, each step exuding unwavering determination. With deliberate poise, Evie cast off her hood, revealing a visage etched with unyielding resolve.
"Well, well," Annie's voice cut through the silence like a blade, her lips curling into a sardonic smile that held a hint of danger as she continued, "Have you come seeking vengeance, my dear? It is quite surprising to see you here, considering Hunter's likely rained hellfire upon your haven by now." The mere mention of Hunter's name sent a shiver down Evie's spine, causing her usually steady mask to waver as she recalled Jacob's solitary return.
Annie's laughter, a hollow echo devoid of joy, reverberated through the opulent carriage, causing Evie's features to tense in response. In a swift motion, a gleaming pistol materialized in Annie's hand from beneath the table with a seamless slide. The metallic click pierced the air as the shot resounded. With lightning reflexes, Evie dodged the bullet, her movements a dance of precision and grace as she lunged towards Annie. Effortlessly, she pinned Annie against the carriage wall, the hidden blade glinting ominously in the soft light. "Do it," Annie's voice dripped with icy command, a chilling mix of fury and perverse satisfaction. "Embrace that darkness I remember—the same darkness that silenced defiant Templars by severing their tongues!"
In the cramped space, Evie's grip on Annie's collar tightened like an iron vice while she levelled the razor-sharp blade toward her throat. "quiet," Evie hissed through gritted teeth as pressure built. But Annie, ever the provocateur, pressed on. "Become the monster who shed her own brother's blood… the monster who rendered her betrothed unconscious!" Annie taunted, her voice echoing in the charged silence. "QUIET!" Evie's voice thundered, a storm of rage and turmoil swirling inside her. Her hand poised with lethal intent, but instead of slashing the blade across her throat, she hurled Annie across the carriage in a burst of chaotic energy. As Annie rose unsteadily from the jolt, a wild glint in her eyes hinted at a savage triumph, her feral grin meeting Evie's gaze head-on. "So! It seems I did break you after all. Do you see? love makes you weak! With my guidance, you would have become the most feared Assassin of all," a cold grin crossed Annie's features as she drawled mockingly. "Alas, for your bleeding heart! Tell me, Evie, what use is an Assassin who cannot kill?"
Evie's breath hitched, the oppressive silence enveloping her like a stifling shroud. Her eyes drifted downward to the intricate carpet, her fingers trembling with a mix of shock and realization.
A faint movement flickered in the shadows behind Annie, catching Evie's sharp gaze.
"My own blood scorned me and now they lie silent," Annie's voice pierced the air, escalating into a crescendo of madness. "My devoted followers eagerly anticipate bestowing upon me the key to eternal power—then shall the entire world quake beneath my rule. Family be DAMNED!"
Annie's laughter erupted into the air but was abruptly cut off by a violent blade piercing her chest. Confusion clouded her features as she glanced down, coughing up crimson droplets. A tall woman, draped in mystery, approached silently from behind; her presence a chilling contrast to the heated exchange. "Next time, send more than three Hunters—I barely had any fun at all," the enigmatic figure teased with a melodic Grecian accent. With precise movements, she withdrew her blade from Annie's back, sending her crashing to the ground. Evie, body tense with vigilance, cautiously retreated as she observed the stranger's still and imposing form. Sensing Evie's apprehension, the mysterious woman spoke softly yet firmly: "You have nothing to fear from me, child... our bond is ancient and unbreakable." With those parting words lingering in the air, the tall woman dissolved back into the dancing shadows leaving behind an eerie silence and unspoken mysteries.
Evie's silhouette sagged against the train car's floor, her gaze distant and unfocused as George and Henry approached. The dim light flickered weakly, creating shifting shadows that caressed Annie's motionless form nearby. Henry eased down beside Evie, his voice a soothing murmur in the sombre air. "Are you alright?" he inquired gently, his expression etched with worry. Evie offered a slight nod in reply, her eyes seemingly tethered to the reassuring solidity of the ground beneath her.
"Where is that relentless Hunter?" George's voice reverberated through the car, a blend of fury and desperation underscoring his words. The abruptness of his words snapped Evie out of her thoughts, compelling her to speak with a heavy heart. "Hunter... he wasn't here, Jacob. He returned alone... and I allowed it," she confessed, her voice tinged with regret. George's brow furrowed further as he sought clarification. A sense of impending dread settled in his chest as he spoke in a hushed tone, "What do you mean?" Finally meeting George's gaze, Evie's eyes bore shadows of anguish and grief. "Hunter found our sanctuary," she disclosed, each word echoing with the burden of shattered determination.
George sprang to his feet, his commanding voice cutting through the air, spurring the others into swift action. Meanwhile, Henry's gentle touch enveloped Evie like a warm embrace, aiding her as she stood up, his eyes mirroring empathy and solace. "I fear I've become a burden to all of you..." she whispered, her voice as delicate as the flutter of a moth's wings. Henry's furrowed brow betrayed his concern as he leaned in, prompting her to explain further. Evie's eyes held a profound sadness that seemed to echo a haunting melody of doubt and vulnerability. "Despite all she inflicted upon me, I couldn't bring myself to put an end to her... I made Jacob a promise of success and yet faltered..." Her revelation hung heavy in the room, resonating with her inner conflict. Henry glanced at Annie's motionless figure with confusion but recognized the anguish reflected in Evie's eyes—a pain he too had once known. "That woman has fractured something within me, and I fear it may never mend," Evie whispered delicately, her voice a fragile harmony woven from sorrow and heartbreak.
