Chapter 3: Into the Unknown
Ariel clutched the cold metal beneath her fingers, her heart pounding as the ship shot through the sky. The sensation was unlike anything she had ever experienced—faster than the strongest ocean current, more powerful than any storm. Her stomach flipped as she tried to steady her breath.
Jim moved with practiced ease, his hands flying across the control panel. The ship hummed in response, shifting course as the stars above them stretched into endless space. Ariel's breath hitched. The vastness of it all—the shimmering abyss around them—was terrifying and exhilarating.
"Alright, we're in the clear... for now," Jim muttered, flicking a few switches. The lights inside the cabin dimmed slightly, and the humming softened. He turned to face her, his expression unreadable. "So, I guess I should ask—who exactly are you?"
Ariel swallowed hard, still gripping the floor. "My name is Ariel. I—" she hesitated, still reeling. "I come from the ocean."
Jim quirked a brow. "The ocean?" He studied her for a moment before realization flickered across his face. "Wait a minute… you're that mermaid, right?"
Ariel blinked, startled. "You... you know about me?"
Jim smirked, leaning against the console. "I've heard a few stories. The girl who traded her voice for legs, right?" He shook his head. "You really made a deal with that sea witch?"
Ariel's face heated with embarrassment. "I didn't have a choice. I wanted to be part of the human world. I wanted... more."
Jim exhaled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, well, 'more' just got much bigger than you bargained for." He gestured to the stars outside. "Welcome to the great wide somewhere."
Ariel finally pushed herself to her feet, her legs still trembling. She stepped cautiously toward the viewing window, her breath catching as she gazed at the expanse beyond. Distant planets glowed like tiny jewels against the darkness. She had dreamed of adventure, but this… this was beyond anything she had imagined.
"It's… beautiful," she whispered.
Jim watched her, a flicker of amusement in his expression. "Yeah, it is. But it's also dangerous. Ursula's not the only one with a bone to pick."
Ariel turned to him sharply. "What do you mean?"
Jim sighed, crossing his arms. "That wasn't just some random crash. I was being chased. And now that you're here… well, congratulations, Princess. You're officially part of the mess."
Ariel's stomach twisted. "Chased? By who?"
Before Jim could answer, a loud beeping sound echoed through the cockpit. His smirk vanished, replaced by a look of annoyance. "Speaking of…" He spun around, pressing a few buttons. The screen flickered to life, revealing a grainy image of a dark, looming vessel.
Ariel instinctively stepped back. The ship was massive, its silhouette jagged and menacing. Even without knowing much about space travel, she could tell it was built for war.
Jim cursed under his breath. "Looks like our friends didn't lose the trail."
The screen crackled, and a deep, gravelly voice filled the cabin. "Jim Hawkins. You have something that belongs to us."
Jim exhaled sharply. "Yeah, yeah, I get that a lot. You're gonna have to be more specific."
Ariel glanced between Jim and the looming ship. "Who are they?"
Jim kept his gaze on the screen. "Trouble."
Ariel swallowed hard. She had wanted an adventure. But now, staring into the abyss of space with enemies closing in, she wasn't sure if she was ready for what came next.
