Harry Potter doesn't belong to me , but to JK Rowling. Harry Potter characters, settings, ect. are not my property. I'm only borrowing them!
Rated for mild language and child abuse. I don't condone the abuse of children (or anyone) but this is how I see the Dursleys.
Hermione sat down and posed her letter to her favorite professor.
"Professor McGonagall,
Ginny Weasley overheard her parents talking about Harry's current situation. I am wondering how this came to be?
I know that Sirius Black was named Harry's godfather and I also know that he wasn't arrested until several hours after the Potters died and Harry was dropped off at his 'home'. My question is why was Harry not given to Sirius at first? Hagrid met Sirius in Godric's hollow and was under orders from Professor Dumbledore to bring him to Surry. How did the Dursleys react to having Harry live with them? I doubt they agreed to take him in without major manipulations on Professor Dumbeldore's part. Why did he not wait until the reading of the will to see who Harry should have been placed with? Were the blood wards so significant that 14 years of abuse were ignored?
Also why did the headmaster never check on him? He was famous and Professor Dumbledore never checked on him once! He didn't send Hagrid to deliver Harry's Hogwarts letter until the first two hundred failed! It would have been obvious he was being mistreated as his cousin had two rooms and Harry had the cupboard!
I also am wondering what Professor Dumbledore's chances of releasing the Dursleys are? Ginny said that abuse is incredibly uncommon in the wizarding world, is almost never severe, and heavily punished. The Headmaster obviously has no right to release them, but he does have a lot of political power.
I also have a request; me and Ginny were wondering if we could visit Harry if Mrs. Weasley apparates us? We are very worried about him and think it would cheer him up to see his friends.
Thank you,
Hermione Granger
Hermione sent her reply with Errol and was hoping she would get a reply soon.
She was so worried about Harry that she was barely able to focus on her potions essay. That's when she remembered it!
Flashback-
Hermione was heading down to the Potionmaster's office to ask about the homework when the sound of voices made her stop.
She knew eavesdropping was wrong, but Harry's name caught her attention.
"Albus, I understand my childhood was not good, but that does not mean that Potter is abused," Professor Snape sneered
Professor Dumbledore's voice responded, "I understand that, I am just wondering; he was hesitant to return home. As the only member of the staff with an abusive background, I was wondering if you noticed anything."
"What I have noticed about Potter is an arrogant brat who has everything handed to him on a silver platter."
Hermione hardly thought this was fair, his glasses were broken and he got a 50 pence piece for Christmas. He also lost his parents at a young age and came here to high expectations.
Professor Dumbledore sighed, "I'm sorry to ask you, but you are the only one who was abused, and by a muggle at that. Just like Harry may be."
Hermione didn't think Harry was abused. She didn't know why, but she just couldn't think of how anybody could hurt her best friend!
End of flashback-
Hermione gasped. Why did she not look into it further? Obviously he was abused! But Professor Snape was too. Hermione decided to find more out about Professor Snape and his past.
About a day later, Hermione had all the information she needed about Professor Snape.
He had a muggle father who did not like magic and a witch mother. Tobias Snape abused both her current professor and his wife.
Eileen Prince tried to protect her son but her magic scared her husband, so he made the beatings worse and she decided to stop using magic.
Neither victims in that situation had been abused even close to how much Harry was, but if he accepted the help, Professor Snape could help him.
Just then Errol flew through the window again with Professor McGonagall's reply.
Miss Granger,
Firstly, tell Miss Wealsey it was incredibly inappropriate to listen in on a private conversation. Secondly, while I do have most of your answers, Albus Dumbledore is an incredibly private person so I do not know everything. I do vow to tell you what I can though.
Firstly, Harry was not given to Sirius because of the blood wards. I, along with Professors Hagrid and Dumbledore, dropped Harry off at Privet Drive. I watched the Dursleys all day and determined they would not be fit guardians. I warned Professor Dumbledore, but he was adamant on leaving him with one of Lily's blood relatives because she died to save her son. Because of this, Harry is safe from He-who-must-not-be-named as long as he calls the place where his mother's blood lies home. Had Harry lived with Sirius, he would not be safe from him. That is no reason to violate the will, but it is the justification the headmaster used. Albus Dumbledore did not give Harry's 'family' the ability to refuse to take him in as we left him on the doorstep in the middle of the night with nothing but a note. We do not know what their reaction was, but based on their actions this summer, I would assume not good.
I was at the reading of the will. It took place the day after Lily and James' death and the day, 1 November, was the day Harry was left on the Dursleys doorstep. It was said that Harry was to go with Sirius, but he was in Azkaban at that time. Next Harry should have gone to Alice and Frank Longbottom. The pair of them were the Potters' friends and well-respected aurors. They were not at the reading due to being out on a mission, but Harry should have been placed in their hands then and there. Three days after the will was read, they were both tortured into insanity by the Lestranges and Barty Crouch junior. They are now in residence in St. Mungos and Neville Longbottom lives with his grandmother, Augusta. The third and final person on the list was myself. If all goes to plan and he agrees, Harry will be living with me until he comes of age.
For your second question, I am going to be completely honest with you; Albus Dumbledore believes in the greater good. He stationed a squib, Miss Figg, to watch over him, but that was in the case of You-Know-Who, not his relatives. The professor and I had an argument about Harry going back into the Dursleys' care the day they were arrested. He wished for the monsters to be taken out of jail so the wards could continue and I said absolutely not. He is still trying and I say he would have a 50% chance of getting what he wants. Child abuse is worse than murder here and Professor Dumbledore's public image may not the best at the moment, but he is still a genius and has amazing political allies.
I see no problem in allowing you and Miss Weasley to visit Harry on Friday if Mrs. Weasley floos to your residence and you apparate from there.
Minerva McGonagall
Professor McGongall's letter answered so many questions and Hermione started drafting a reply for Ginny.
On Friday morning around 1000 the fireplace flared to life. Hermione's parents jumped backward and she laughed. Out came Ginny and Molly Weasley.
Mrs. Weasley smiled at Hermione's parents, "Nice to see you again! I hope you don't mind if we steal your daughter to see Harry for a couple of hours?"
They both shook their heads and hugged Hermione goodbye.
She took the girls' hands in hers and they disapparated.
Harry looked much better than expected, but he still looked weak and fragile. She walked over to him, "Hey Harry!"
Ginny, being as touchy as Molly, lunged forward and tackled Harry.
He gasped for breath and tried pushing her off.
Hermione ran forward and pulled her back, "Careful!"
"Thanks, Hermione. Sorry Ginny but I can't right now. I'm tired."
Ginny looked at him, her face reddening, "Sorry. I got a bit carried away. Are you doing okay?"
Harry nodded, "Yes. I'm just having problems with my magical core. I'm physically okay," he assured her
Hermione cocked her head to the side,"Why are you having problems with your core?"
"It has been protecting me for so long that it's adjusting to not needing to," Harry explained
"Why does it have to adjust?" Ginny asked
Harry smiled at her, "If it doesn't my magic will lose control and a simple levitation spell could break the ceiling."
Hermione found that interesting, "Does that mean you would be more powerful than you were previously?"
Harry shrugged, "I wouldn't have Dumbledore level power obviously, but it would be a dramatic increase, I believe."
Hermione's eyes were as round as galleons, "Cool!"
All three chuckled as Professor McGonagall entered, she looked angry, very angry.
The four waited for her to share her information.
She opened her mouth furiously, but instead of the anger expected, they heard worry and regret, "Dumbledore is in his office arguing with Sirius."
"About what, Ma'am?" Hermione questioned
"The Dursleys have been released and are meant to reclaim their guardianship of Harry tomorrow. It is being dealt with and they will not be allowed to, but I think you should know to watch out for the headmaster."
