Far, far away in the solar system, miles away from planet Earth, was an unknown planet that was the home to billions of human-like grey alien species.

This mysterious planet was known for its very cold, winter-like weather that occurred all year round.

Because they had constant below 0 degree temperatures, ice as far as the eye could see, and snowed like there was no tomorrow, skating was an extremely common pastime amongst the dwellers. It was so common that you'd think it was their national sport, but alas it was not.

For one little alien, skating looked very fascinating and fun.

Roger, who was only 500 years old, had known about skating for a while at this point from relatives who skated (some even suggesting to his parents to teach him), from reading about it in books, and because of how common it was where he lived.

With his dad leaving him and his mom 100 years ago, Roger's mother had become extremely overprotective and controlling of him within that time period, and lost her mind if she wasn't aware of his whereabouts.

Being pretty much housebound, unless it was to go visit relatives, attend space school, or if his mother was going somewhere, Roger wasn't allowed to go very far, and would be caught dead trying to do anything by himself.

Learning to skate was also a big no-no from his mother as she feared "it was too dangerous" for him.

But he was far from a perfect and well-behaved "kid".

Roger had major streaks of mischief and misbehaved a lot, which was a huge headache on his mom, and his dad when he was around.

One day though, he got the brilliant idea to sneak out of the house and go to a nearby ice pond to try and achieve his lifelong goal of learning how to skate.

Since ice skating was quite popular here, the pond drew in quite a crowd, and had a wooden hut that held skates to be borrowed for residents who didn't own any.

In an attempt to not be caught red handed, Roger quietly opened his bedroom window and climbed out, making sure not to create any noise.

Once he arrived at the pond, the little alien found a small pair that looked like they would fit him just right, however, there was a bit of a problem. Roger never wore skates before and didn't know how to tie laces yet, let alone stand on skates and slippery ice

Upon figuring out how to slip the skates on, laces untied, and trying to stand up, he wobbled and fell several times before even making it to ice. He started getting frustrated pretty quickly but with the stubborn attitude he had, he was determined to get onto the ice.

After many attempts to try and stand on skates, he managed to finally stand up and take baby steps towards the pond. What he didn't know was what was about to throw him off balance yet again. With one step onto the frozen water, he slid right onto his tiny bottom.

Startled and hurt by the sudden impact, tears welled in his eyes. Roger got on all fours and once again tried to stand up; going a very little distance on his feet. He kept falling and falling to the point where he had visible injuries. Eventually, he was so hurt and upset, that he kicked off the skates and headed home; limping, bruised, cut, tears streaming down his face, and audible sobs coming from his mouth.

His mother was in the midst of tidying up their living space, doing the dishes to be precise, but noticed it was strangely quiet. Last she knew, her son was playing upstairs in his room, but it was unusually quiet. She assumed maybe he was playing more quieter than usual or perhaps having some quiet time, and decided to return to work.

Or so she thought before hearing the main door open.

Failing to return home quietly and unnoticed, Roger's mom's angry look quickly turned into that of a concerned one as she saw he was injured. She swept him up into her arms and coddled him, shushing his loud cries in attempts to figure out what happened. While she was furious, she was much more concerned with the state of her child.

Through sobs, and having his wounds tended to, Roger admitted to her how he snuck out to the nearby skating pond and tried skating. His mother slapped him across the face and in a strict, booming, rage-filled voice, told him how she forbade him to do such a thing; threatening him that consequences could be dire if he tried to run off again.

That evening, Roger was sent to bed early without any night light, stories, plushies, hugs, kisses, or any kind of love as his punishment.

For the next few weeks, Roger was on an even stricter housebound, grounded if you will, unless it was a necessary outing, like school, and watched like a hawk. His mother boarded up windows and locked doors, hiding keys in secret places. He begged to get an ice rink in their yard, and threw tantrum after tantrum when denied so. Tired of dealing with his meltdowns, she eventually gave in and had a mini ice pond installed in the backyard as she knew it would curb any tantrums.

In the aftermath of his very first skating attempt, his mom (who had acquired skates for him) would tie up his skates and carry him to the pond, to reduce any chance of injury before getting on the ice. Roger's mom knew how to skate herself, being a big part of their culture and all, and knew the dangers of it, hence why she was hesitant at first to let her son do so. She would hold his hand while they glided along, reassuring him that she had him, and would do intervals of letting him go to try and do it on his own.

This went on for some time but through occasional falls and tears, Roger was really determined to get better. Time passed and once he learned how to put on his own skates and felt comfortable enough to go out on his own, he would spend his free time, days off, and every waking second after space school practicing; ignoring dinner time, bathroom breaks, hunger and thirst urges to the point he'd be practically starving, parched, bursting and unable to stand up when nightfall came and was forced inside.

As months and years passed, his falls became less and less and he was gliding away; care free. The simple glides soon became twists, turns, and jumps, and Roger had finally achieved his life goal of learning how to skate; showcasing it whenever he could.
