Chapter 26: A Night's Rest Before a Taste of Metal

Over the Seas – Zao Luxury Ship, Evening Hours

The waters below shimmered in the soft light of dusk as the Zao Luxury Ship glided gracefully over the ocean's surface, its course set for Shang Tu. The ship's journey was calm and steady, the gentle hum of its engines barely audible over the serene sounds of the sea. They were scheduled to arrive at Shang Tu by the following morning, but for now, the tranquility of the journey allowed the group to unwind and reflect.

Standing by the rails, Tails, Sonic, and Torque were deep in conversation, their gazes drifting over the peaceful horizon as the sun dipped lower, casting an orange glow on the rippling waters.

"So, it's called Hyper-go-on energy?" Tails asked, processing the new information Torque had shared.

Torque nodded. "Yup. That's what powers them. It's the special ability of the Wisps, and the reason Brevon wanted them so badly back then," he explained. Gyro hovering beside him, gave a small nod of pride. "Each Wisp comes in a different color, and every one of them has its own unique power. Gyro here, for example, can transform into a powerful laser, while others can turn into drills, spikes, and more."

Tails stared in awe, his mind buzzing with the possibilities. "Wow, that's incredible. I'd love to meet the other Wisps someday," he mused, already thinking of ways he could use their energy for good.

Sonic, leaning against the railing, grinned. "Visiting space? I'm down. We should totally take a trip out there one day," he said nonchalantly, as if planning a casual vacation.

Torque chuckled at the thought. "Heh, maybe someday," he replied with a slight smirk. "But trust me, space is no joke."

Sonic raised an eyebrow, a playful grin spreading across his face. "Tell me about it," he shot back. "Let me tell you about our little space adventure when we took down the Death Egg and—"

As the guys continued their conversation, Lilac, Carol, and Milla were standing not too far off, watching the waters below. The gentle sway of the ship and the cool sea breeze brought a sense of calm over them.

"Can you believe we did all that?" Carol asked, leaning against the railing as she watched the waves crash softly against the ship's side. "We actually saved a city all by ourselves!"

Lilac nodded as she glanced back at Sonic and Tails. "Yeah... Meeting them was probably the best thing that could've happened to us," she said softly, her eyes filled with gratitude.

Milla stood by the edge, her gaze focused on the water, a thoughtful expression on her face. She seemed lost in her own world, filled with wonder at the vast ocean stretching out before them. Lilac noticed and gently nudged her. "Hey, Milla, how are you feeling?"

Milla blinked, snapping out of her thoughts before giving Lilac a small smile. "I'm okay... I was just thinking about how lucky I am to have met all of you. I've never been on a ship like this before. It feels like something out of the stories," she said, her voice quiet but filled with awe.

Carol, curious, raised an eyebrow. "You're always talking about these stories. Where did you hear them?"

Milla furrowed her brow, her ears drooping slightly. "I... I don't really remember," she admitted, her voice tinged with confusion. "Some of the details are fuzzy, and I don't know where I learned them, but they've always been in my head."

Carol and Lilac exchanged a glance in surprise. Milla's past had been a bit of a mystery, and this only deepened their curiosity. But before they could ask further, Tails suddenly approached them with an excited gleam in his eyes.

"Of course!" Tails exclaimed, stopping in front of them. "The emerald radar!"

"Emerald radar?" Lilac and Carol echoed in unison, looking at each other in confusion.

Tails grinned. "Yeah! I can build a radar to track the Chaos Emeralds more easily. I completely forgot about it until now," he admitted sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head. "But with Milla's emerald and the resources on this ship, I can definitely make one!"

The girls' eyes widened in surprise. "You can make a device to track the emeralds?" Lilac asked, her voice tinged with excitement.

"That's awesome!" Carol added, leaning in with interest.

Milla, trusting Tails with her precious yellow emerald, smiled warmly as she handed it over. "Here, you can use my wishing star," she said, her eyes sparkling with hope. "And I want to watch how you make it!"

Tails looked a bit surprised. "Are you sure? It's probably going to be boring watching me work," he said, trying to downplay it.

Milla shook her head. "I want to watch. I think it'll be fun," she insisted, her smile never wavering.

Tails smiled back, accepting the emerald. "Alright then. Let's go build ourselves an emerald radar!" He waved to the rest of the group as he and Milla headed inside, eager to get to work.

As they disappeared into the ship's interior, Lilac couldn't help but feel that there was more to Milla's past than she knew. But before she could dwell on it further, Sonic walked over, munching on a chili dog he had somehow procured.

"So, what's next? Want to check out the other activities around here?" Sonic asked, his mouth full as he grinned mischievously.

Carol smirked, eyeing the chili dog in his hand. "Dude, you're obsessed with those things," she teased, her grin widening. "Give me a bite."

Sonic happily handed over the chili dog, and the two of them chowed down together, enjoying the shared food. Lilac shook her head with a smile, but soon Sonic extended another chili dog toward her with a knowing smirk. She raised an eyebrow, but couldn't resist. With a playful grin of her own, she accepted it, the three of them now enjoying the simple pleasure of food and each other's company as the evening light slowly dimmed.

Night Hours

Under a sky sprinkled with stars, the ship sailed smoothly through the night. The constellations twinkled above, their light reflecting off the calm ocean waters below.

Carol and Lilac stood by the railing, their eyes fixed on the starry sky above them. The silence between them was comfortable, their thoughts drifting as they gazed up at the infinite expanse of stars.

"Just imagine, Carol," Lilac mused softly. "There are other worlds up there, just like ours..."

Carol grinned as she leaned over the railing. "Yeah... We should totally go on a space adventure someday! That would be so cool!" she exclaimed, her mind already racing with the possibilities.

Sonic strolled over, a playful smirk on his face as he joined them. "Space adventures, huh? Been there, done that," he said casually, leaning against the railing. "But hey, I've only been to space a couple of times. Maybe I'm not the best tour guide,"

Lilac turned to him, her expression thoughtful. "It's crazy to think Eggman built a giant space station... multiple times," she said, shaking her head in disbelief.

Carol frowned, crossing her arms. "The guy could be making a fortune with his tech and helping people, but nope. He just has to be a pain in the neck and try to conquer the world," she grumbled, her tone filled with frustration.

Sonic sighed, his smile fading slightly. "That's Eggman for you. Always using his genius for evil schemes, and yours truly always being there to stop him," he said with a wink, trying to lighten the mood again.

Torque, standing near the edge of the ship with Gyro by his side, joined the conversation, his voice thoughtful. "I used to think space was all excitement and adventure," he said, his gaze distant as he stared out at the dark waters.

Lilac looked at him with concern. "Did you have a change of heart?"

Torque sighed, a faint smile crossing his lips as Gyro nudged him gently. "Not really. It's just... I wasn't prepared for the sacrifices involved," he admitted, his voice heavy with the weight of past losses. "But dwelling on what can't be changed doesn't help."

Lilac nodded, her expression somber. "You're right. We can't change the past."

Sonic walked over, placing a comforting hand on Torque's shoulder. "But you can hold onto the good memories. They're what keep us going—for now and for the future," he said, his words carrying a quiet strength. Torque and Gyro both smiled, comforted by Sonic's reassurance.

As the night grew deeper, Sonic stretched, letting out a yawn. "Phew, speaking of holding onto things, I think I'll hold onto some sleep. Goodnight, guys." He waved and headed inside, his steps light and relaxed.

Lilac smiled after him, feeling a sense of calm. "I'm going to check on Tails and Milla. What about you?" she asked, turning to Torque.

Torque leaned back against the railing, taking in the peaceful night. "I'll stay out here a bit longer. The night's too beautiful to waste," he replied with a content smile.

"Ditto," Carol added, watching Lilac head inside.

Carol turned her attention back to Torque, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "Soooo, how's your planet like?" she asked curiously, leaning in with excitement.

Torque raised an eyebrow. "Hm? Oh, well, it's mostly water. More than Earth, actually, around eighty percent" he replied, a little caught off guard by the question.

Carol's eyes lit up. "Do they have cool water monsters there? Like, how big are they? Uh, uh, do they have ninja sharks?!" she asked, her excitement bubbling over.

Torque and Gyro exchanged a confused glance before Torque shook his head. "Ninja... sharks?"

With mock seriousness, Carol solemnly placed a hand on his shoulder. "Boy, you have a lot of Earth culture to catch up on," she said, shaking her head.

The sound of their voices echoed across the deck as they continued talking about Earth, space, and everything in between.

Inside the Headquarters

Inside one of the cozy, dimly lit room, Tails worked diligently on the makeshift radar. His brow was furrowed in concentration as he carefully adjusted the final components. Beside him, the Yellow Chaos Emerald sat on the table, softly glowing. Milla, her tail wagging slightly, sat nearby watching with wide eyes, completely fascinated by the process.

"So, when the radar's done, we'll be able to find more wishing stars?" Milla asked, her voice filled with wonder as she watched Tails work.

Tails chuckled, appreciating her curiosity. "Pretty much," he said, his hands never stopping as he continued tinkering with the device. "I didn't have my usual gadgets, so I'm improvising with what's available on the ship. Once this is done, we should be able to track the Chaos Emeralds—or 'wishing stars,' as you call them."

After a few more adjustments, Tails leaned back with a satisfied grin. "And… it's on!" He proudly flipped the switch, and the radar lit up, displaying a digital map of the surrounding archipelago. Both Tails and Milla leaned closer, but their smiles quickly faded as they noticed something odd.

"Wait... This is weird," Tails muttered, furrowing his brow. Instead of pinpointing the locations of all seven Chaos Emeralds, the radar showed only one single, moving dot that flickered sporadically on the map. It wasn't stable, and the readings kept jumping from one place to another, making it impossible to track accurately.

"What's going on?" Milla asked in confusion as she looked at the blurry radar.

Tails scratched his head, puzzled. "This doesn't make sense. The radar should be able to pick up the Emeralds' powerful energy waves easily. It's like... something's interfering with the signal," he muttered, his mind already running through several theories.

Milla tilted her head thoughtfully, trying to piece things together. "Wait," she began, her voice uncertain but curious. "The radar detects energy, right? But if it detects really strong energy waves..., shouldn't it also be picking up the Kingdom Stones?"

Tails' eyes widened in realization. "Of course!" he exclaimed, smacking his forehead. "The Kingdom Stone's energy must be interfering with the Emerald's signal! The stone's been in Avalice for so long that it's creating a sort of... static on the radar. The Chaos Emeralds' energy is being drowned out by the stone's presence!"

He looked at Milla with a bright smile, admiration in his eyes. "Milla, that's brilliant! You figured it out!" he praised her.

Milla blushed deeply, her cheeks turning a soft shade of red as she looked away bashfully. "Oh, I... I wasn't trying to be smart. You're the genius, Tails," she mumbled shyly, feeling flustered by the praise.

Tails shook his head, his expression softening as he smiled warmly at her. "Don't sell yourself short, Milla. That was a really clever observation. You've got great instincts, and your alchemic powers are pretty amazing too. I mean, creating those green cubes out of thin air? That's no small feat!"

Milla blinked, tilting her head as she summoned a green cube into her hands, examining it closely. "I guess... I've always been able to make these cubes. I don't really know how, though," she admitted, her voice growing quieter as her thoughts drifted. "They have been always a part of me…"

Tails noticed the change in her tone, his smile fading slightly as he sensed her uncertainty. "Do you know where your powers come from? Maybe your parents would know," he suggested gently, hoping to encourage her to share more about herself.

Milla's ears drooped, and her gaze fell to the floor. Her voice was barely a whisper. "I don't know where my parents are. All I remember is waking up alone on Relic Island one day, in the woods. It was so quiet... and I was scared. I… think I have vague memories of stories they told me, but most of it is blurry, as well as their faces… All I could do was look at the stars and hope... that I'd find them someday."

Her words hung in the air, filled with a quiet sadness that tugged at Tails' heart. He felt a pang of guilt for bringing up such painful memories. "Great... I did it again," he muttered to himself, wishing he hadn't pushed her.

But then, determined to make things right, Tails reached out and gently took Milla's hand in his own, giving her a reassuring squeeze. Milla looked up at him in surprise, her wide eyes filled with uncertainty.

"Hey," Tails said softly, his voice filled with kindness and determination. "After all this is over, we'll help you find them. I promise."

Milla's eyes brightened, her hope returning as she searched his face for any sign of doubt. "Really? You'd do that for me?" she asked, her voice small and filled with wonder.

"Of course," Tails replied with a sincere smile. "We're friends, aren't we? We won't let you go through this alone." He squeezed her hand again for emphasis. "I promise."

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Milla threw her arms around him in a tight hug, her tail wagging excitedly behind her. Tails blinked in surprise but quickly hugged her back, smiling as her warmth filled his heart.

Outside the Room

Unbeknownst to the two, Lilac stood just outside the room, having overheard their conversation. She leaned against the doorframe, her heart heavy with empathy as she listened to Milla's story. The realization that Milla had been carrying so much loneliness with her all this time made Lilac's chest ache with guilt. She cursed herself for not asking sooner.

But as she watched Tails and Milla share a heartfelt moment, she smiled, knowing that Milla had found true friends in their group. I'll make sure she never feels alone again, Lilac thought to herself.

She was about to walk away when she heard a noise from above, something faint yet distinct. Her curiosity piqued, Lilac decided to investigate, quietly slipping out of the hall and heading up to the ship's roof.

Outside on the Ship's Roof

Up on the roof of the ship, Sonic stretched out comfortably, his hands behind his head as he prepared to take a nap under the stars. The cool night breeze swept over him, and his eyes were half-closed, enjoying the peaceful moment after a long day.

"You know there are enough rooms for all of us, right?" a voice teased from behind. Sonic glanced over to see Lilac walking toward him. She sat down next to him, smiling softly.

Sonic grinned, adjusting his position to make room for her. "Yeah, but sometimes it's nice to sleep under the stars. Besides, I've had enough cramped spaces for one day."

Lilac chuckled, shaking her head lightly. "Well, if you say so," she said as she joined him in stargazing. After a moment of quiet, she looked over at him, her expression softening. "I'm glad you're safe, you know?"

Sonic's signature smirk returned as he shrugged. "You didn't need to worry about me. I would've made it out somehow," he said with a wink.

Lilac sighed, a touch of envy in her tone. "I wish I could be as carefree as you."

Sonic glanced at her, his smile fading slightly. "It's not about being carefree," he explained. "It's about trusting the people around you and even if I wasn't around, I know you'd take care of everyone just fine."

Lilac blinked in surprise, taken aback by the amount of trust Sonic placed in her. "You really believe that?"

"Yeah, I do," Sonic said earnestly. "You've got what it takes, Lilac. You're a great leader."

Lilac's heart fluttered at his words, a warm feeling spreading through her chest. She smiled fondly, her earlier doubts melting away. "Thanks, Sonic. I won't let you down," she promised.

They shared a comfortable silence after that, both of them gazing up at the stars. After a minute, Lilac glanced over.

"Mind if I join you?" she asked, lying down next to him. "I could use some fresh air."

"Sure thing, the more the merrier," Sonic replied, his smile returning. They both lay back, side by side, staring up at the stars above, their worries and exhaustion slowly fading into the background.

As the night deepened, the two of them drifted into a peaceful sleep, lulled by the gentle hum of the ship and the calm of the ocean around them.

Morning Hours

Time passed, and the gentle lull of the waves slowly gave way to the golden light of dawn. The Zao Luxury Ship continued its smooth journey, cutting gracefully through the calm ocean as the morning sun peeked over the horizon. The peaceful ambiance was serene, with the gentle hum of the ship filling the air.

Up on the roof of the ship, Sonic and Lilac were curled up, having fallen asleep under the stars. Everything was still and quiet... until—

BOOM!

The peace was suddenly shattered by the unmistakable sound of explosions. In an instant, the calm was replaced by chaos, and frantic voices echoed across the deck.

"Lilac! Sonic! Wake up!" Carol's voice cut through the commotion, filled with urgency.

Sonic and Lilac bolted upright, startled by the noise and the sudden call to action. Their hearts raced as they quickly scrambled to their feet.

"What's going on?!" Lilac exclaimed, her eyes wide with alarm as she heard the sound of more explosions in the distance.

Carol skidded to a halt beside them, pointing frantically towards the horizon. "We've got company!" she shouted, her voice tight with anxiety.

A menacing airship loomed on the horizon, its silhouette growing larger as it approached. Smaller than the Zao Luxury Ship, but armed to the teeth with bristling cannons, it bore the unmistakable insignia of Doctor Robotnik. The sight of it sent a shiver down their spines.

Sonic's eyes narrowed as he recognized the familiar design. "Tails, that's the..."

"Robotnik's Flying Battery!" Tails confirmed, his voice filled with tension as he ran up beside them. "But this one is way smaller than the original!"

"A Mini Battery!" Milla gasped, her eyes wide with alarm.

Cannons from the Flying Mini Battery began to fire rapidly, sending shells crashing into the water around them. Explosions rocked the ship as the enemy vessel drew closer, and from its belly, a swarm of flying Badniks poured out, their red eyes glowing with malice as they honed in on the Zao Luxury Ship.

Lilac's heart pounded in her chest as she took in the sight. "Someone use the ship's cannons!" she shouted, scanning the deck for any sign of defense.

"There are none!" Torque yelled back, his voice tinged with panic. "This ship isn't armed!"

"Are you kidding me?!" Carol groaned in frustration. "What kind of luxury ship doesn't have cannons?!"

Tails quickly formulated a plan. "Sonic and I will take the Tornado and head for the enemy ship," he announced, his voice steady but urgent. "The rest of you hold off the Badniks and protect the ship!"

Lilac's eyes widened. "Tails, that's too dangerous! We can't afford to lose you guys!" she protested, stepping closer to him.

Sonic placed a hand on her shoulder, his expression calm but determined. "Trust us, Lilac. We've destroyed countless Flying Batteries before. Just keep the Badniks off this ship while we take care of the Mini Battery," he reassured her, his voice filled with unwavering confidence.

Lilac hesitated for a moment, her heart conflicted, but seeing the determination in both Sonic and Tails' eyes, she nodded firmly. "Okay... I'll trust you. Go! We'll handle things here."

Sonic flashed her a confident grin. "That's the spirit! Let's go, Tails!" With that, the two of them sprinted towards the Tornado that was stored on the lower deck.

Carol unsheathed her claws, her expression shifting to one of fierce determination. "Alright, we've got some Badniks to smash! Let's show these tin cans who their messing with!"

Torque, with Gyro by his side, readied his laser wispon. "Let's protect this ship at all costs," he declared, standing tall as the first wave of flying Badniks swooped down towards them.

Milla, clutching her Chaos Emerald for courage, gave a nod of determination. "We'll protect everyone!"

Lilac watched as Sonic and Tails boarded the Tornado and soared into the sky, heading straight for the Flying Mini Battery. As the biplane ascended into the air, she silently wished them luck, her fists clenching in resolve as she turned to face the oncoming swarm of Badniks. "Here they come!" she shouted, her voice strong and steady.

The ship battle had begun.

Flying Mini Battery

Inside the dark, metallic confines of the Flying Mini Battery, the atmosphere was tense. The low hum of machinery echoed through the narrow halls as a tall figure stood shrouded in shadows within the control room. Their sharp gaze was fixed on the monitor in front of them, displaying the Zao Luxury Ship under attack. The camera feed zoomed in on Sonic and Tails as they approached in the Tornado.

"Cease fire on the main cannons. Focus on the plane," they ordered, their eyes never leaving the screen. Their posture was calm, yet there was a dangerous edge to their presence.

The Badniks and automated cannons immediately shifted their firepower, focusing solely on the Tornado. Sonic and Tails continued their evasive maneuvers, the biplane weaving between the blasts as they approached the enemy vessel.

"Once they're on board," the figure continued, their voice lowering with a cold, menacing tone, "resume firing at the ship. And when they reach inside..." Their gaze flicked to their right, where a gleaming blue figure stood motionless in the shadows.

Metal Sonic stood beside them, his eyes glowing a cold, mechanical red as he watched the same feed. The video showed Lilac fighting off a group of Cluckers on the ship's deck, her hair whipping through the air as she struck them down with graceful yet fierce movements.

The figure's flashed with glee as they turned toward Metal Sonic. "That's when you strike."

Metal Sonic's gaze remained fixed on the screen, his metallic hands slowly curling into tight fists. The sight of Sonic's companions fighting below—particularly the image of Lilac—seemed to ignite something deep within his programming. Anticipation. Hatred. He clenched his fists tighter, his sharp fingers digging into his palms as he silently awaited his command.

His eyes glowed brighter in the dim light of the control room, reflecting the image of the battle outside.

He was ready to crush them all.
