Chapter 3: The Return

After many days of traveling across the ocean and through the Canadian prairies, the train finally pulled into Toronto's Union Station. Among the passengers stepping onto the platform, Julia Ogden held little Susannah's hand. Next to them were two suitcases and a travel trunk. The city looked familiar, yet slightly strange after such a long absence.

"Ready to see Daddy?" she asked gently, leaning in toward her daughter.

The girl's face lit up immediately, and she nodded eagerly.

"Yes!"

She didn't have William's new address. Even though they'd exchanged letters recently, they mostly talked about work and updates on Susannah. He wasn't expecting her, not now, and that was exactly the point.

She only knew one place where she was sure to find him, and she could only hope nothing had changed.

At the station house, the early afternoon calm was in full swing, several constables flipping through files, the steady clack of a typewriter, and the shuffle of paperwork. George was just leaving Detective Murdoch's office, notebook in hand, when he noticed a familiar figure.

"Dr. Ogden?" he said, sounding stunned. Then a genuine smile spread across his face. "So it's true…"

Julia smiled back.

"Hello, Constable Crabtree."

"William doesn't know I'm here, does he?" she asked quietly, glancing toward the detective's office.

"Not a clue," George replied, amused.

She let out a sigh of relief, and he grinned even wider.

"I'm so glad you're back. Really."

"I am too, George. I really am."

They didn't get another word in before Susannah suddenly let go of her mother's hand and took off running.

"Daddy!"

Her voice cut through the low hum of the station like a bell. William Murdoch was standing in his office with his back to the door, flipping through papers, when he heard that familiar call. He spun around and froze.

Susannah threw herself into his arms. He dropped the documents onto the floor and knelt, holding her tight. For a long moment, he didn't say a word.

Then he looked over her shoulder, and their eyes met.

Julia stood in the doorway with a gentle smile on her face. She looked tired but calm, carrying a tenderness that needed no name.

William stood up, still holding Susannah in his arms. He took a step toward Julia, then another. She came closer too, and when they finally met, there was no need to speak.

He slipped his free arm around her, and she leaned her head against his chest.

"What… what are you two doing here?" he asked quietly, like he still couldn't believe it.

Julia looked into his eyes and smiled softly.

"We've come home."

For a moment, he just stared at her, as though afraid she might vanish if he blinked.

"For good?"

She nodded.

"If you'll still have us."

William glanced around, as if the rest of the world had suddenly become unimportant.

"Always."

He pulled them both close, placing a soft kiss on Julia's cheek.

Not far away, George stood with his hands in his pockets, watching them with a warm smile. He sighed quietly and shook his head in mild disbelief.

"At last," he muttered to himself. Then he turned on his heel and reached for the telephone on a nearby desk. He called Effie to share the news. On the other end, he heard her excited voice and her promise that she'd come right over, hoping to catch them before they left.

Meanwhile, William stepped back a little and looked at Julia.

"Come on, I want to show you something."

"Now? I left our luggage by the front door," Julia said, glancing over her shoulder.

"All right," William replied, and in moments he was on his way to the luggage. On the way, he hailed a constable.

"George, can you lend a hand?"

"Of course!" George answered enthusiastically and hurried after him.

"Where to?"

"In my office," William said. "They'll be safe there."

Once their luggage was settled in his office, William took Susannah's hand and led both her and Julia upstairs.

He opened a door, and they stepped into a room at the station.

"This is my new workroom," William explained. "Inspector Choi set it up specifically for me. I mentioned it to you before, but it's better to see it in person. A space for my experiments, inventions, analyzing evidence…"

Julia took it in with an admiring glance. Everything had its place, tools, lab glassware, prototypes, and notes. You could sense it wasn't just a workshop but something more: William's little world, built on precision, passion, and solitary work.

As soon as they stepped inside, Susannah looked around curiously, then let go of her dad's hand and wandered off. She stopped by a motorcycle in the corner, then turned to inspect a bulletproof vest.

"It looks like a miniature lab. You've got everything," Julia remarked.

"Almost everything," William said softly, gazing at her. "It was missing you."

Julia studied him for a moment, a faint smile playing on her lips.

"Well, now you're not missing anything."

Their eyes met. They moved closer and shared a quiet, unhurried kiss, as if there was nothing else they needed. Just each other.

They stood there for a while, wrapped in silence. William said nothing, as though trying to lock this moment into his memory. Then he glanced at Susannah.

"Come here, my little detective," he said kindly, crouching beside her.

He explained how fingerprinting worked and showed her a magnifying glass. Wide-eyed, Susannah listened to every word as if it were a story from a fairytale.

Julia stood back, watching them in silence, a small smile on her face. Her home was wherever they were.

After a dozen or so minutes, they left the workroom. Susannah threw one last look over her shoulder, reluctant to leave all those strange and fascinating objects behind. William closed the door and nodded toward the hallway.

"Let's go."

Julia just nodded, resting her hand lightly on his shoulder while he carried Susannah. She clutched the magnifying glass William had given her, "just to remember us by."

They made their way into his office, and William gently set his daughter down. She kept examining everything through the magnifying glass, solemn as a little explorer. Meanwhile, Julia and William stood close to each other in the middle of the office, as though the world had slowed just for them.

"I'm so happy you're here," William said quietly. "I missed you both so much."

Julia reached out, lightly grasping his tie and pulling him closer.

"We missed you too," she whispered, gazing right into his eyes.

They kissed slowly, with no rush, as if nothing else mattered.

Just then, Inspector Choi walked in.

"Detective, I've got-" he began, then stopped short at the sight of them in an embrace.

William and Julia sprang apart, slightly embarrassed.

Choi raised his eyebrows and stepped back.

"Oh. Sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt," he said with a small smile, noticing Susannah peering at him through the magnifying glass, apparently oblivious.

Clearing his throat, William adjusted his cuff.

"It's all right, Inspector. Please come in." Then he added with a faint smile, "This is my wife, Dr. Julia Ogden. And our daughter, Susannah."

Choi nodded politely, smiling in return.

"I've heard quite a bit about you," he said to Julia. "Glad to finally meet you in person."

Julia extended her hand graciously.

"Thank you, Inspector. I hear things have changed a lot around here."

"We try to keep up with the times," Choi said with a playful note in his voice. "But I must admit, this team values Detective Murdoch's work more than ever. And now I can see where he gets his motivation."

William looked a bit flustered, and Julia raised an eyebrow and gave a wry smile. Susannah glanced at the newcomer from behind her magnifying glass, then looked to her father.

"Daddy, is he a detective like you?"

William smiled and looked at Choi.

"He's an inspector," William explained, returning her smile.

Choi leaned down a little, still smiling at Susannah.

"You could say I'm your dad's boss," he said with a little wink.

Susannah's eyebrows shot up in awe.

Julia laughed under her breath, shaking her head.

"Better watch yourself, William. We've got a tiny agent who sees everything."

"And asks some pretty pointed questions," William added with a grin, eyeing his daughter, who was still focused on her magnifying glass, furrowing her brow intently.

Just then, Effie appeared in the doorway.

"George said-" she began, but stopped when she spotted Julia. Her face brightened with a huge smile.

"So it's true!" she exclaimed, stepping right into the office without bothering with formalities. "Julia!"

Julia approached her with open arms.

"Effie."

They embraced warmly, and Susannah, magnifying glass in hand, watched them intently.

Effie pulled back, keeping hold of Julia's shoulders.

"It's so good to have you here."

"It's good to be back," Julia said softly, smiling.

Inspector Choi, who'd been standing aside with a file in his hand, cleared his throat gently.

"I'll just leave these documents on your desk," he said to William. "You can take care of them later."

"Thank you, Inspector," William said sincerely.

Choi nodded, then slipped out of the office.

William glanced at Julia, then at Effie.

"Maybe you two can take a walk?" he suggested gently. "I just need to finish one last thing. Then… we can head out together."

Julia smiled softly.

"All right. Besides, we've got a lot to talk about."

William leaned in and kissed her cheek before turning back to his desk.

Effie gave her friend a smile.

"Come on. I want to hear everything."

Julia nodded, and they left the office together, Susannah trailing along holding her mother's hand, her new magnifying glass clutched like a prized treasure. The three of them stepped outside into the fresh air.

They talked quietly, unrushed, about London, about what went on in Toronto while Julia was gone, about loneliness and what it meant to come home. Effie told her all that George had seen, the neighbour, the case, and why it had worried him so much.

They didn't need many words to understand each other.

When they returned to the station, William was just finishing up some notes at his desk. Hearing their voices, he set down his pen and came out.

Julia, Effie, and Susannah were standing in the middle of the room. Effie was talking, Julia was listening with a faint smile, and Susannah was peering through her magnifying glass, as if searching for clues on the floor.

William walked up, and Julia looked his way with a warm smile. Effie stepped back, giving them space.

"All done?" Julia asked.

"Yes," William replied with a gentle smile. "That's it for today."

"Shall we go?"

Julia nodded.

They gathered the luggage and left the station together, walking out at an easy pace.
