Olympus Coliseum: The Knight, the Nobody, and the SOLDIER

[Olympus Coliseum - Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMiX starts playing]

The journey from White Space to Olympus Coliseum was swift, a flash of white light pulling Aqua through the void and placing her in familiar territory. As she stepped forward, her silver boots clicked softly against the worn Coliseum ground. The grand stands, once echoing with the roar of crowds and the clash of warriors, now sat empty, bathed in the golden light of the afternoon sun. Flames flickered atop the pillars lining the Coliseum walls, unmoving in the heat, casting long shadows across the sand.

Above her, the sky was a deep azure, the sun glaring down with unrelenting force, making the sandstone glow with warmth. But it wasn't the sun that set her senses on edge. Aqua could feel the distorted pulse of the Phantom Ruby. It was faint, but unmistakable.

Though the arena looked unchanged from her last visit all those years ago, there was a subtle wrongness in the air, like an echo of something trying to rewrite reality. The Phantom Ruby's energy clung to this world like a shadow beneath the sunlight.

As Aqua advanced towards the centre of the arena, she spoke aloud to herself.

"It has to be here somewhere." Her blue eyes scanning the empty Coliseum. "I wonder if I'll run into Hercules or…"

Suddenly, the distorted warble split the silence and shook the air. It was followed by a surge of crimson light that swept across the arena. Aqua took a sharp step back.

In a flash, Master's Defender appeared in her grasp, solid and steady.

She exhaled softly.

"No delay or glitching this time."

The weapon recognised the urgency of their Master's request.

As the red glow of the distortion receded, enemies began to appear.

Shadow Heartless emerged first, twitching as they formed, their yellow eyes gleaming. But among them were beings Aqua had never seen before. They were strange, slinking creatures with cylindrical heads and bodies clad in what looked like light grey jumpsuits. Their mouths appeared to be zippers, and an unfamiliar symbol was emblazoned across their heads.

"What?!"

Aqua stared, her gaze narrowing. She was used to the presence of Heartless, but these things were different. They felt wrong.

"Why do these creatures feel so… hollow?" she whispered, keeping her weapon raised. "They feel empty. Like…"

Her voice trailed off as the realisation hit. Her features raised slightly.

"Me."

There was no more time to think. The Shadows scurried forward, while the strange new enemies slinked towards her with eerie precision. Aqua braced herself as the clash began.

Shadows and Dusks

Battle Music: Tension Rising - Kingdom Hearts HD II.5 ReMiX

Aqua surged forward, meeting the advancing Heartless and Nobodies head-on. The first Shadow darted towards her feet, claws swiping at her ankles. She spun in place and leapt over it with a cartwheel, the soles of her silver boots landing firm as she twisted her Keyblade into a downward slash.

"Hraah!"

CRACK!

The Shadow dissolved into black mist, its form unravelling in silence.

Another zipped in from the side, low to the ground—too fast for a direct strike. Aqua narrowed her eyes and let it pass, then pivoted sharply, her Keyblade arcing behind her like a crescent moon.

"Take that!"

The second Shadow didn't even have time to skitter before it was split clean in two.

The third launched from behind her. Aqua responded with a swift backflip, her Keyblade raised defensively in a sweeping arc that made it stumble. She landed in a crouch, rolled forward, and slammed the Keyblade into the enemy like a hammer.

"TEYAAH!"

Dust and sand kicked up—and when it settled, the third Heartless was gone.

But Aqua wasn't out of the woods yet. The weird creatures, Dusks, had begun to move and circle.

Their bodies twisted unnaturally, gliding across the arena floor as if gravity only partially applied to them. One of them lunged at her chest-first, arms flailing in a wavelike motion. Aqua sidestepped with grace and slashed across its torso, only to watch its body twist and bend around the blow.

"Tch—slippery things," she muttered.

The Dusk glided around behind her, trying to catch her off guard. Aqua spun around with a flourish, her Keyblade trailing a blue shimmer as she delivered three fast strikes: diagonal, crosscut, and a forward thrust.

"Haa! Rrrah! Take this!"

That was enough. The Dusk collapsed in on itself and disappeared.

The second and third closed in together, swaying like broken marionettes. Aqua backed up into open space, then raised her Keyblade towards them.

"Freeze!"

A freezing pulse of Blizzaga exploded outwards. One Dusk was caught mid-glide and instantly encased in a burst of ice. Aqua lunged forward and shattered it with a clean overhead strike.

"Come on!"

The last Dusk danced to her left, arms flailing wildly. It lunged low, body flattening, then snapped upright like a spring-loaded trap. Aqua jumped into a cartwheel again, flipping clean over it and landing just behind. She brought her Keyblade down with an elegant spin, cutting through its side. As it faltered, she twirled her weapon once, planted her heel, and delivered the final blow.

"Take that!"

The Dusk vanished in silence, like the others.

Only the sound of Aqua's steady breathing remained.

She lowered Master's Defender, her eyes scanning the arena.

"Not bad for a warm-up," she muttered.

[Tension Rising stops playing]

Aqua stood in silence, her thoughts swirling.

"Could those creatures have been Nobodies too? "she wondered, her gaze lingering on the space where they'd vanished. "Or... something worse?"

Before she could reflect further, a sudden voice cut through the still air. It was deep, gruff, and unmistakably angry.

"I knew you were behind all this!"

Aqua spun on instinct, her Keyblade rising defensively as her eyes locked onto a new presence.

It wasn't a Heartless. Nor a Nobody.

But it was no ally either.

[Sir Gawain Appears - Sonic and the Black Knight starts playing]

Standing a distance away was an imposing figure clad in heavy redwood armour, like a knight torn from the pages of a storybook. His visage was hidden behind a metal visor, and twin axe-like swords gleamed under the glare of the world's sun. Red dreadlock-like spines spilled from beneath his helmet, framing a stance that radiated raw tension.

"Who are you?" Aqua asked cautiously.

"Bah! You can't fool me with your tricks and lies," the knight snapped, his voice sharp with accusation. Though his face was hidden, the venom in his tone cut clear.

"Tricks and lies?" Aqua echoed, furrowing her brow. "What are you talking about?"

But the stubborn knight wasn't listening.

"Why have you brought me to this place, Merlina?!" he growled with forceful purpose.

"Merlina…" Aqua echoed under her breath, her eyes widening. The name hit her like a sudden blade—not because she recognised it, but because she'd been called it before. Back in the Mirror Hallway, both Sir Lancelot and Percival had mistaken her for this mysterious figure.

Aqua sighed, her expression tightening.

"Great. This again."

The knight's voice rang out with righteous fury once more.

"Do not feign ignorance! I would know that aura anywhere, the very same that once cloaked our kingdom in shadow and despair!"

"I'm not Merlina," she said firmly, raising her Keyblade.

"Lies!" the knight barked, shifting into a combat stance. His twin blades caught the light, glinting dangerously. "I sensed your presence the moment I was freed from that cursed white void. You cannot hide behind illusions!"

"Listen to me!" Aqua snapped, mirroring his stance. "I am not Merlina! I've already explained this to Sir Lancelot-"

"You know of Sir Lancelot?" the knight interrupted. His strong stance wavering for a fraction of a second.

"Yes. We fought, and—"

"You fought him?!" he interrupted again, his voice rising into a snarl. "What have you done with Sir Lancelot?!"

The light around his blades intensified as he slashed them outward, the steel flashing dangerously.

"Tell me now, wench!"

Aqua flinched, more annoyed than threatened by the remark.

"Wench? Really?"

But there was no time to argue.

The knight charged, blades drawn, his fury leading the way. His weapons swept in front of him like scythes, kicking up dust and sand in twin arcs as he raced across the arena.

"You shall pay for what you've done, Merlina! This place will be your grave!"

Mysterious Knight

Battle Music: Through the Fire - Crush 40 - Sonic and the Black Knight starts playing

Aqua met the knight head-on.

The clang of metal rang through the empty Coliseum as Keyblade met twin swords. Aqua gritted her teeth, sliding back slightly under the force of his wild slashes. The knight attacked like a wild storm of crimson. He was agile, fierce, and relentless. They moved low, using his compact size to their advantage, spinning through with tight footwork and acrobatic sweeps.

"Come on!" Aqua shouted, flipping backwards to avoid a downward slash. She landed gracefully, immediately lunging into a sweeping combo—horizontal, vertical, then a rising strike.

"Hrrragh!" the knight twisted mid-air, parrying with both swords. "You fight well, for a traitorous dark queen in disguise!"

"What is wrong with you?" Aqua barked, dodging another spinning slash. "I told you, I'm not Merlina!"

She extended her Keyblade mid-movement.

"Freeze!"

A burst of jagged ice crystals erupted outward, catching the knight mid-dash. He skidded across the frost-slicked arena, his hot pink metallic boots screeching against the frozen stone. Blizzaga's chill spread in a shimmering web beneath him—but he pushed through, steam rising from his armour as magic clashed with sheer momentum.

The ice began to melt quickly, undone by the searing heat of the sun and the fury of their battle.

"I see you've taken up some obscene new weapon…" he growled, eyeing the Keyblade with disdain. His twin blades spun back into motion, catching the light with a flare. "No matter. You'll still die here!"

Their blades clashed again, ringing out like bells of war.

Aqua cartwheeled to the side, flipping over his sweeping strike and slashing from behind, only for the knight to twist mid-motion and catch both of her blows with crossed blades.

"You're fast," Aqua muttered, eyes narrowing.

"I am unyielding!" the knight roared, stepping back. His twin swords spun in his hands like whirling wheels of steel, a red aura flaring to life around him.

Aqua's instincts kicked in.

"He's powering up!"

She raised her Keyblade high.

"Thunder!"

Thundaga cracked from the sky above, slamming into the ground as the knight charged. He grunted, pushing through the blast, but his momentum faltered—staggered by the jolt. Aqua seized the opening, dashing in with two quick slashes across his shoulder plates and a rising strike that sent him skidding backwards.

"Your façade is slipping, Merlina!" he snarled. "You used magic! That is proof enough that it's you behind the lies!"

Aqua's patience snapped.

"Shut up!"

She released her Keyblade into the air. The blade rose, glowing with radiant light, and began to orbit her like a celestial weapon.

"Spellweaver!"

With a graceful spin, Aqua hovered slightly above the ground, her Keyblade weaving around her in flawless arcs—an extension of her will and fury. Each movement unleashed bursts of radiant energy, slamming into the knight and forcing him back, step by step.

"Your light tricks won't fool me!" the knight shouted.

He twisted, dodging and weaving through the glowing barrage. Then, with a burst of momentum, he leapt high and tucked into a spiralling dive, his body becoming a streak of red steel as he crashed down like a falling star.

Aqua darted clear just in time.

The knight's twin blades slammed into the ground, sending sparks, dust, and stone flying in a fiery shockwave.

Without missing a beat, Aqua fired back.

"Freeze!"

The Keyblade Master cast Blizzaga again on a patch of the floor, sending the knight sliding. She followed up with a clean strike to his side.

"Strike me down if you dare!" he shouted, spinning up with another burst of aura.

Their weapons met once more at the heart of the arena, unleashing a shockwave that rippled through the Coliseum like a war drum's final beat.

Aqua cartwheeled, side stepped under his swings, and countered with magical strikes and precise blows. The knight retaliated with wild, spinning combos and explosive power. Neither gave ground. Sparks lit the arena floor. Ice shattered. Lightning flared.

A true colliding of worlds.

Both lunged—Aqua's Keyblade swirling with radiant energy, the remnants of Spellweaver trailing like dancing threads of starlight. The knight roared as he brought both blades down in a mighty X-shaped arc.

CLANG!

The impact echoed like a violent thunderstorm, sending both fighters flying back.

Aqua flipped mid-air, landing hard and skidding across the cracked ground. Her silver boots carved sharp trails through the dust as she caught herself.

Across the arena, the knight landed in a crouch, his armoured boots slamming into the stone with practiced precision. The force of the blow crackled through the ground, but he absorbed it. With a sharp motion, he swept both blades outward in a wide arc, clearing the air of lingering sparks and dust. The steel sang as it carved the space before him, and the fire in his stance reignited.

Neither moved an inch. Their eyes locked.

"So," the knight growled, breaking the tense silence, "you've learned how to fight with honour… Merlina."

Aqua exhaled sharply, her patience thinning. She raised her Keyblade—not out of caution, but out of sheer annoyance.

"This is getting old," she snapped. "My name is Aqua. Get it right."

The knight's grip on his blades tightened.

"Lies won't save you," he snarled. "Only your blade will speak now."

The knight charged once more, his blades slicing through the air with deadly precision.

Aqua prepared herself, raising her Keyblade defensively, but before she could parry, a sudden blur shot in front of her.

[Through the Fire stops playing. Succession - Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep Final Mix begins playing]

A sword intercepted the twin blades mid-swing. Sparks scattered, the force of the clash sent the air trembling.

"!?" Aqua gasped, stepping back instinctively, her blue eyes widening.

A tall, broad shouldered figure stood between her and the knight. They were strong and unmoving, like a wall of steel. His spiky black hair swayed slightly in the warm breeze. His face, though slightly older and more defined, was unmistakable. The blue glow in his eyes burned with conviction.

His dark blue combat uniform clung to a solid frame, armoured at the shoulders, as he held a standard-issue sword confidently against both of the knights' blades effortlessly.

"Whoa now," the man said, flashing a sly grin. "Picking on a lady? That's just not cool."

Aqua froze.

"…Zack?"

He turned his head slightly, his eyes gleaming with familiar warmth.

"Hey there, Aqua. Miss me?"

Her mouth opened, but the words stumbled out.

"Where did you—?" she began, surprise tangled with a flicker of relief. "You have incredible timing."

Zack gave a soft chuckle.

"I try."

With a sudden surge of strength, he shoved forward. The force sent the knight staggering back—he flipped once, armour clanking with every motion, before landing hard in a crouch. One knee slammed to the ground, both swords still clenched tightly in his grip.

Aqua's eyes narrowed slightly as she watched Zack hold his ground.

"His strength… it's improved since the last time I saw him."

Zack gave a casual spin of his sword and rested it across his shoulders, glancing back at her with a smirk.

"So," he said with a teasing tilt of his head, "does this count as that date you owe me? I mean, I showed up just in time to save you from a knight in shining red drama. Not exactly candlelight and dinner, but hey... ladies' choice, right?"

Before Aqua could reply, the knight grunted and pushed himself upright. He took a moment to steady himself.

"You dare mock me, knave?!" the knight barked, straightening with effort. "I am Sir Gawain, Knight of the Round Table! Your insolence shall be your undoing, my friend!"

Zack turned to face the stubborn knight, raising an eyebrow.

"Oh, my bad, Sir Gawain," he said, his voice rich with sarcasm. "I didn't mean to step on your dramatic knightly tantrum, but can we just pause for a second and talk about how you're trying to skewer my friend for no reason?"

"You won't deceive me!" Gawain growled, eyes burning beneath the visor. "You are but an illusion, conjured by Merlina's magic! And she—" he thrust a blade in Aqua's direction, "—has already struck down Sir Lancelot!"

"I didn't," Aqua argued back, stepping forward to stand beside Zack. Her voice was calm, but there was steel beneath it. "Lancelot's alive. I fought him, yes—but he's fine. He left with Percival and the others. They're searching for shards of something called the Master Emerald."

Gawain's posture shifted slightly.

"Wait… you have seen her too?"

"Yes."

"Master… what now?" Zack tilted his head, glancing at Aqua. "That's a new one for me."

"The Master Emerald," Aqua said, her tone steady.

"Right. Sure. Big shiny thing I'm guessing. Got it."

Zack let out a short breath and continued.

"Either way, your day's been a lot more eventful than mine. I've just been stuck wandering some weird, empty white void."

"White Space," Aqua corrected automatically.

Zack nodded, dragging his free hand through his hair.

"Yeah. That. Makes sense now, kinda."

Gawain growled, gripping his swords tighter.

"Lies. More lies. Merlina weaves her falsehoods well."

"Why won't you believe Aqua?" Zack said, his grin fading into a frown.

"My knightly instincts know the truth!" Gawain barked. "And they scream that your words are forged of shadow and deceit!"

"Is this guy for real?" Zack groaned, glancing at Aqua with an exasperated look.

"Afraid so," Aqua sighed. "For a knight, he doesn't listen very well."

Gawain took a step back, his blades raised, gaze locked onto Aqua.

"You struck down Sir Lancelot. You speak falsehoods of Percival. And now you stand beside your henchman, thinking me fooled!"

"Henchman?!" Zack lowered his sword from his shoulder and looked insulted. "Okay, wow. Rude."

Aqua angled her Keyblade forward, her expression deadpan.

"That's a new one."

"I shall strike you both down!" Gawain thundered with a threatening tone. "And I will tear my path from this cursed void!"

Aqua exhaled, her patience thinning fast.

"I'm done talking."

Zack glanced sideways, watching her shift into stance. The quiet in her posture said more than words.

"So... tag-team this guy?"

Aqua's eyes were on Gawain as she replied.

"Hit him hard enough he starts listening."

Zack cracked a grin.

"Now that's a plan."

Sir Gawain's twin swords slashed in front of him in a fiery X. Sparks scattered as he charged forward like a force of nature.

"Say your prayers, you lying rats!"

Sir Gawain - Round 2

[Battle Music: Fight the Knight - Crush 40 - Sonic and the Black Knight starts playing]

Sir Gawain lunged forward, his twin blades glinting in the sun as he tore across the arena like a crimson whirlwind.

Zack stepped up to meet him head-on, a confident grin flashing across his face.

"So this is what passes for a Knight of the Round Table, huh? Hope you've got more than flashy titles!"

Their blades clashed, Zack's strength matching Gawain's fury in raw impact. Sparks danced between them as Gawain spun, twisting into a brutal Spiral Upper strike. Zack moved just in time, the air splitting where his head had been.

Aqua slid into position beside Zack, her Keyblade raised high.

"Thunder!"

Lightning cracked down from above, the Thundaga spell striking near Gawain's feet. The knight reacted instantly, flipping back with acrobatic grace and landing at the edge of the arena in a crouch.

Before either of them could blink, Gawain launched forward in a spinning corkscrew, blades aimed like a drill straight for Aqua.

Zack moved on instinct, stepping in front of her in a blur of motion.

Steel met steel with a sharp, echoing CLANG as he caught the blow, his boots grinding across the ground from the sheer force behind it.

"You alright?" he asked Aqua, holding firm, muscles tensed.

"Just fine," Aqua replied, her Keyblade raised.

"That's two saves now. You owe me a proper date after this."

"Less flirting," she said, her eyes locked on their foe. "More fighting."

"Yes ma'am," Zack smirked. With a grunt, her shoved Gawain back with a burst of raw strength.

They launched forward in perfect sync—Aqua low, Zack high—their movements flowing together like a well rehearsed dance.

Zack's blade became a blur, each strike of his Chain Slash combo hammering down on the knight. Sparks flew with every clash, forcing Gawain onto the defensive.

As the knight raised both swords into a firm Twin Blade Block, bracing against the relentless assault, he failed to notice the shimmer of heat beneath his boots.

Aqua slid into position, her Keyblade sweeping upwards.

"Fire!"

The hot flames of Firaga burst from beneath Gawain's stance in a focused eruption, the fire curling around his legs and staggering his footing. He growled, twisting with effort as the heat singed through gaps in his armour.

Zack didn't let up.

"Eyes down, hothead."

He followed up with a rising slash, cracking through Gawain's guard and sending him stumbling back.

Aqua was already in motion, her Keyblade spinning effortlessly in her grip.

"Now!"

Zack's blade came in first, a diagonal slash that sparked off Gawain's armour. Before the knight could counter, Aqua unleashed another Thundaga.

"Grrrah!" Gawain grunted, forced to backpedal, the crackling electricity hitting around him hard.

With the knight off balance, Zack followed with a leaping slash, his sword crashing down like a meteor. Gawain blocked, but the force sent him skidding several feet.

"You're tough, I'll give you that!" Zack remarked loudly.

"I am a knight!" Gawain roared, planting his feet and spinning both swords outwards in a spin, forcing space between them with a sweeping arc.

Aqua didn't flinch. She stepped into the edge of his spin, weaving through the attack swiftly, her Keyblade trailing a shimmer of light.

"Spellweaver!"

Magic burst from her body in radiant spirals. She lifted from the ground in a fluid hover, her movements blurring with speed as arcs of light spun around her like ribbons.

Zack moved in harmony, there was no hesitation from the warrior.

"Time for the finisher!" Zack called out, breaking into a sprint.

Aqua was still in motion, her body glowing with the radiant energy of Spellweaver. Her Keyblade carving streaks of light with every motion. Each strike danced like starlight. Her movement was graceful, but truly devastating.

Gawain raised his blades to block, gritting his teeth, but he couldn't match her speed.

"Haaahh!" he bellowed, being knocked by a fast hit of Spellweaver.

With one final, spinning slash, Aqua slammed her Keyblade square into his chest plate, launching Gawain upwards with a shockwave of light and momentum.

But before he could recover—

"Octaslash!" Zack's voice echoed, launching himself towards Gawain.

From mid-air, he descended in a storm of fury—his blade slicing in rapid, precise arcs. One strike. Two. Four. Seven. Eight. The final blow cracked down like a thunderbolt, sending a tremor through the Coliseum.

Gawain was blasted backwards, his armour sparking, grunting in disbelief as he was helplessly hurled through the air.

Aqua followed up with her final command.

"Bubble Blaster!"

She locked onto the airborne knight, and dozens of glowing, aqua-blue spheres streaked through the air in perfect unison. They swarmed Gawain mid-flight, detonating in bursts of shimmering water and magic. Each devastating burst struck with pinpoint precision.

"GWAHHH—!"

The knight tumbled end-over-end like a comet crashing back to earth. He slammed into the arena floor, skidded violently across the ground, and flipped over the side. The knight vanished into the sand below with a heavy, echoing:

THUD.

finally, there was silence.

Aqua let out a breath, steadying her stance. The Keyblade now firmly back in her hand.

Zack landed beside her with a roll, smoothly rising to his feet. He spun his sword once before sliding it back into its sheath on his back with a click.

"Well," he said, brushing dust from his gloves, "I'm guessing he's not gonna call that a draw."

Aqua exhaled, her eyes still on the edge of the arena.

"Let's just hope he's still willing to listen."

Rank: S

[More to Be a Knight Than to Serve Your King - Sonic and the Black Knight starts playing]

Sir Gawain emerged from the sand, limping but unbroken. Dents marred his armour, and his helmet sat askew from the impact, but his resolve was still burning.

"Seriously?" Zack muttered, watching the knight stagger forward. "Oh, come on—you lost. Just give it up."

"Never!" Gawain roared defiantly. "To flee is to forfeit honour. I will fall before I yield!"

Zack shook his head.

"You'd rather die than admit you lost? That's… dramatic man."

Aqua stepped forward, her Keyblade glowing with soft green light.

"No one is dying today."

She raised it high, and with a pulse of energy, Curaga bloomed into the air. The magic swirled around Gawain in gentle spirals, like threads of light. His wounds sealed. The tightness in his arms eased. Strength returned to his limbs.

He looked down at his hands, still gripping his twin swords, as the cracks in his armour shimmered and mended. For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then, slowly, he let one blade fall with a metallic clatter, and reached up to lift his visor.

Purple, weary eyes stared back at Aqua and Zack. Red dreadlocks spilled over his face. His breathing slowed.

He looked not like a warrior—just an Echidna. Tired. And for the first time, vulnerable.

"You… healed me?"

"Yes," Aqua replied calmly.

"But… why?" Gawain's voice cracked with disbelief.

Aqua lowered her Keyblade, her stance relaxing but her voice steady and firm.

"Because you were hurt. That's reason enough."

Gawain stared at her in bewilderment. The idea seemed to clash with everything he'd ever known.

"But… to be healed by an enemy?" he muttered, his expression shifting from confusion to sheer disbelief. "That defies everything I was taught. It is not just dishonourable… it's a wound to my pride. To the code I live by. A knight should rise or fall by their own strength."

Zack stepped forward, gesturing with both hands.

"What? Seriously? You're mad because she healed you?"

His expression soured as he continued.

"Okay, I've seen some melodrama in my time, but this is next level."

Without warning, Sir Gawain dropped to one knee, the motion was sharp and sudden. He gripped the hilt of his remaining sword with both hands and slowly angled the blade toward his throat.

Aqua's eyes flew open.

"No—!" she gasped, stepping forward, a jolt of instinct overriding reason.

Zack's smirk vanished in an instant. All the humour drained from his face.

"Whoa, whoa! Hold on—what the hell are you doing?!"

Gawain closed his eyes. His voice was grave, filled with unwavering conviction.

"Only death can remove this stain upon my honour…"

The words hung in the air like a loud funeral bell. Time itself seemed to slow around them all.

"Wait—STOP?!" Aqua cried out, panic surging through her as she lunged forwards. Her free hand was outstretched, desperate to stop him.

"Oh no you don't!" Zack barked, his tone cutting through the moment like a gunshot.

He moved before thought could catch him.

CLANG!

With a powerful, sweeping strike of his forearm, Zack smashed the blade aside just as Gawain began to thrust it forward. The steel shrieked as it scraped across the stone, skidding away in a spray of sparks.

Gawain froze in place, stunned. His arms were still awkwardly poised mid-motion, caught between shame and shock.

Suddenly, Zack leaned in was Gawain's face. His blue eyes blazing, voice roaring.

"Are you out of your damn MIND?!" he shouted. "You were gonna off yourself because someone healed you?! What is this, a tragic stage play?!"

Aqua stepped beside him, her voice lower but no less intense, her face filled with disbelief.

"You're seriously going to throw your life away… because I helped you?"

Gawain, still kneeling, threw his arms wide like a zealot preaching to the wind.

"Silence! You cannot begin to fathom the depth of disgrace this brings!"

Zack turned to Aqua, his expression deadpan.

"We broke him. He's officially cracked."

Gawain clenched his fists, trembling with fury and shame.

"To be bested in combat by one who is not a knight—and then spared by her healing magic? It is as if I were bested by an apprentice! A disgrace! A stain upon the honour of the Knights of the Round Table!" His voice wavered, caught between indignation and despair. "The shame is eternal. I have failed them all…"

Neither Zack nor Aqua responded immediately.

Instead, Master's Defender faded from Aqua's grasp in a soft shimmer of light. She let out a slow breath not out of frustration or pity, but something quieter.

Her expression was still. Not emotionless, but dangerously close.

She stepped forward, calm and measured, stopping just before the kneeling knight.

"I may not wear armour like you. I may not bear the title of 'knight,'" Aqua began, her voice quiet and unwavering, "but I've fought to protect others my entire life. I've faced darkness head-on, even when it consumed me."

Her eyes softened as she continued.

"I've lost my home. My friends. I've lost everything that made me who I was."

She paused, her voice dipping just slightly.

"…Even my heart."

Gawain looked up sharply.

"Your heart…?" he echoed, as though the very idea wounded his sensibilities.

"Wait. What?" Zack asked, stepping back in disbelief. "What do you mean, you lost your heart?"

Aqua turned her head slightly towards him.

"It's complicated."

Gawain stood slowly, dust and sand falling from his armour as he rose. He stared up at her, his purple eyes narrowing—not with anger, but wonder.

"How can one live without a heart? That is unnatural. Impossible."

"I didn't think I could either," Aqua replied quietly. She placed a hand gently on her chest, where her heart should have been. "But I'm still here. A Nobody. A being that exists when the body remains… but the heart is gone."

"Wait, hold on—'Nobody'? That's not just you being self-deprecating is it?" Zack asked, folding his arms with a raised brow.

"No. That's the actual term," she said simply.

Zack looked at Gawain. Gawain looked at Zack. Both shared the same baffled expression.

"That's… honestly kind of harsh," Zack muttered, rubbing the back of his head.

Gawain's voice softened.

"And yet despite this, you healed me. A foe. A stranger without a heart. That is something Merlina would never do."

"So," Aqua replied, arms crossing as she tilted her head slightly, "are you going to start calling me by my actual name now?"

Sir Gawain let out a long, drawn-out sigh—half pride, half reluctant concession. His shoulders rose, then sank beneath the weight of dignity.

"Aqua…" he said at last, his voice gentling. "Your courage and light, even without a heart, are unlike anything I've ever encountered. It is truly humbling."

He dipped his head in a short but sincere bow, the gesture precise and knightly.

"You wielded your weapon with purpose, not malice. You fought with grace, not vengeance. Such strength, tempered by mercy, is worthy of respect. From this moment on, I shall address you as Lady Aqua."

Aqua inclined her head in return, her gaze steady, a quiet flicker of emotion behind her calm.

"Thank you, Sir Gawain," she said softly. "But I'm no different from anyone else. I just keep moving forward. Even when it hurts."

Gawain straightened, his shoulders squared, but not out of pride. This time, it was reverence.

"Forgive my shortcomings," he said, his voice quieter now, stripped of bravado. "You have opened this knight's stubborn and foolish eyes. I judged you wrongly, and for that, I am ashamed."

Aqua met his gaze, her voice warm but firm.

"Then learn from it," she said. "Carry that lesson like a sword. Not as a wound."

A brief silence passed between them, an unspoken understanding. No more hostility. Only respect.

From behind, Zack cleared his throat, scratching the back of his neck.

"Well, that was beautiful," he said, half grinning. "You're a Nobody, he's a knight with a flair for dramatic theatrics, and I've apparently been wandering through a colourless void made entirely of sentient existential crises."

Aqua rolled her eyes, but the corner of her mouth tugged into a faint smile.

"Glad to see you haven't changed," she replied.

Zack smirked, brushing imaginary dust off his shoulder.

"Hey, someone's gotta bring the levity in a world full of brooding swordfighters."

Shifting focus, Zack looked around the vast, empty Coliseum, his brows furrowing.

"This place looks like Olympus Coliseum, where we first met, remember?" He turned back again to Aqua, his voice softening with familiarity. "But I entered here through that weird white void thing… White Space, you called it, right?"

"Yes. We're in a place called White Space," Aqua explained, her voice calm. "This version of the world is suspended between time and space. Like a memory trapped in limbo."

Zack let out a low whistle before he replied.

"So... a broken world stuck on pause?"

"Something like that," Aqua replied with a slight nod.

Sir Gawain's gaze swept over the quiet, stonework of the Coliseum.

"Curious," he murmured. "I too wandered that colourless realm before arriving here. A void without sound or colour until I sensed Lady Aqua's presence. Then, of course, I mistook her for the Dark Queen, Merlina."

Zack raised a brow, turning to Gawain.

"You did? I didn't see you wandering around."

"We must have crossed paths at different moments," Gawain said thoughtfully. "I was freed from a most dreadful limbo, a realm of darkness and silence. I wandered in search of answers when I was freed, until fate led me here."

"And now look at us," Zack grinned, nudging Aqua playfully with his elbow. "One big dysfunctional team."

"I suppose that is true… Knave," Gawain replied firmly, folding his arms with knightly poise.

"Knave? Wow, okay. Harsh. Could you not just call me Zack?"

"That name lacks discipline," Gawain declared firmly. "But if you insist... Apprentice Knight Zack shall suffice."

Zack groaned, tossing his head back exasperated.

"Oh, come on…"

Aqua chuckled softly behind a gloved hand.

"I don't think you're winning this one."

"Fine," Zack sighed, smirking. "I'll play along with the whole knight thing."

Gawain gave a respectful nod of approval.

"A wise decision."

Zack rolled his eyes with a grin, then turned serious again.

"Alright, Apprentice Knight or not, how are we gonna fix this time mess?"

"Well, that's why I'm here. To fix it," Aqua explained, her resolve strengthening her composure.

"With that unique blade of yours, I presume?" Gawain asked curiously. His tone was respectful.

"That's right. The Keyblade," Aqua confirmed with a nod. "It's more than a sword. It's a key to restoring balance."

Gawain's eyes flickered with wonder. He stepped closer, the tension in his armour softening.

"The way you wielded it… it was not just battle. It was art. An extension of your will. I have never seen such technique."

He lowered himself to one knee, pressing his gauntleted fist to the ground.

"You have my respect once more, Lady Aqua."

Zack raised his brows and pointed at Gawain like a referee announcing a score change.

"Okay—now you're just showing off."

Gawain exhaled slowly, then stood, rolling his shoulders as if the weight of his title had loosened.

"Forgive my pride. As I stated earlier, I judged before I understood."

Aqua offered a faint, genuine smile.

"You're not the first."

Zack folded his arms and nodded towards the distant, faded stands.

"So how do you fix this place with your Keyblade?"

Aqua looked towards the edges of the Coliseum once more, trying to look for any signs of the world's Keyhole.

"We have to find the Keyhole of this world," she explained.

"The Keyhole…" Gawain echoed, stroking his chin thoughtfully.

"Because keys and keyholes?" Zack added, trying to ease the tension again with a small shrug. "Makes perfect sense, I think."

"It's more than symbolic," Aqua affirmed with a knowing smile.

Aqua stepped forward purposefully, her eyes scanning the quiet arena once more.

"If I lock this world's Keyhole, it'll stabilise the trapped world. Restore its form, its colour. Most importantly, it'll stop outside forces from corrupting or distorting it."

"Outside forces, huh?" Zack murmured thoughtfully, placing a hand on his chin and narrowing his bright blue eyes. "Hmmm…Interesting"

Aqua softened slightly, pausing her stride as she laid a reassuring hand on his forearm.

"Don't worry about it too much," she said, voice gentle yet firm. "That's my burden to carry, not yours."

Zack glanced down at her hand, warmth flickering briefly behind his playful expression, giving way to genuine concern as he met her steady gaze.

"Even if it's your burden," he began earnestly, "It doesn't mean you have to carry it alone."

Aqua hesitated, searching Zack's face briefly, then gave a single decisive nod, quietly grateful.

"In that case… I could use some help locating it."

Sir Gawain stepped forward immediately. He picked up his swords from the ground and stood tall once more.

"Then you shall have it," the knight declared resolutely.

But before any further exchanges could occur, a sudden voice—smooth, mocking, and all-too-familiar—echoed from a shadowy walkway on the far end of the arena.

"Did someone say... Keyhole?"

Aqua froze, her eyes widening slightly. Zack spun towards the voice, recognition dawning on his face.

"No way… I know that voice," Zack muttered, half incredulous, half wary.

Aqua's expression hardened, she summoned Master Defender back to her hand.

"It can't be..."

Gawain turned to both of them in confusion, his gauntlet hands tightening around his twin swords.

"Who? Who goes there?"

From the swirling shadows at the edge of the Coliseum emerged a tall figure, drifting forward with theatrical flourish. A blue flame erupted atop his head, illuminating his features and sharp, sarcastic smile.

"Hades!" Aqua growled softly, immediately raising her Keyblade defensively.

"Hey! How ya doin'?" the lord of the Underworld greeted cheerfully, arms spreading wide in exaggerated welcome. "Been a while, huh? Miss me?"

Gawain stared incredulously at the fiery figure drifting closer, bewilderment flashing openly across his normally proud features.

"This is the one you call Hades? As in, Greek mythology's ruler of the Underworld? God of the dead?"

"The one and only," Hades smirked, sliding closer smoothly as smoke swirled dramatically around his black robes. "Well, well! And what do we have here? Another noble knight in shining armour. Adorable."

Gawain bristled visibly, gripping his blade tightly. Zack stepped forward, carefully positioning himself between Gawain and the sly deity.

"Don't antagonise the scary fire guy," Zack said under his breath, his comment aimed at Gawain. Then, louder towards the deity, "So, what are you doing here, Hades?"

"Umm hello, I live on this world remember. Olympus, Underworld, ring a bell? Home sweet home," Hades replied with a dismissive wave. His eyes, however, glinted with calculating interest as they settled on Aqua. "But enough pleasantries, let's get down to business. You want a Keyhole. Lucky for you, I happen to know exactly where it is."

"Oh, I'm sure you're dying to tell us," Aqua said flatly, her Keyblade still at the ready. "Out of the goodness of your heart."

Hades was caught off guard by Aqua's bite. He slowly recovered, placing a hand dramatically over his chest.

"Oof—wow. That sarcasm's practically sizzling. Someone woke up feisty today," he muttered, then grinned wide. "But hey, I'm nothing if not generous."

His tone shifted, the grin sharpening.

"That said, thanks to your spooky pal Mephiles and his shiny little Phantom Ruby, things around here have gotten a teensy bit… dicey."

Zack blinked, looking to Aqua sharply.

"Mephiles?"

Gawain echoed Zack's confusion, turning sharply towards Aqua.

"Phantom Ruby?"

Aqua didn't reply, her gaze locked on Hades. Her voice was cold, direct.

"Where's the Keyhole?" she demanded, her Keyblade leveled with purpose.

Hades raised his hands in mock surrender, drifting a step backwards with his signature flair.

"Whoa, whoa, easy there, Blue," he said, grinning. "Let's dial the temperature down a notch, huh? You're throwing off some serious ice queen energy, and not the family-friendly blockbuster kind."

Aqua didn't flinch. Her blue eyes stayed locked on him, unwavering.

"I asked you a question, Hades. Where's the Keyhole?"

Hades sighed dramatically, twirling one of his smoky tendrils like it was a stress toy.

"Yikes. Alright, alright, I get it. You were always intense, but this? This is, like, 'end-of-the-world, someone took my last-espresso' levels of intense. What happened, you skip your morning meditation or something?"

Aqua's grip on her Keyblade didn't loosen. The sternness in her gaze only deepened.

"Every second Mephiles remains in control, this world slips further into ruin. So unless you want to be trapped in a frozen moment of twisted reality forever, you'll answer. Now."

Her words hung in the air like a blade drawn too close to the throat.

"Okay… remind me never to get on your bad side," Zack remarked, open mouthed.

Sir Gawain's eyes widened slightly. He adjusted his stance, tone quiet but firm.

"Such resolve… Lady Aqua speaks as a knight would before a duel of life and death."

Hades held up both hands in theatrical surrender, sighing as if Aqua's intensity had physically drained him.

"Whoa-kay, okay! So dramatic." Hades threw up his hands, smoke curling from his fingers like an annoyed stage magician. "You want answers? I'll give you answers."

He lazily waved a smoky trail through the air, like brushing away tension itself.

"Here's the deal. Even though my charming little Underworld is currently stuck in limbo, seriously, the irony is killing me, if you really want that Keyhole…"

He paused, leaning forward with a sly grin that practically dripped mischief and chaos.

"…you'll have to try your luck at the Underworld's newest, most exclusive attraction: the Phantom Ruby Trials."

Zack tilted his head, visibly unimpressed.

"Yeah, nope. That doesn't sound terrifying at all."

"Phantom Ruby trials?" Gawain echoed, as he turned to look up at Aqua. "What dark sorcery is this?"

Hades groaned dramatically, rubbing his temples as his blue flame flickered erratically on his head.

"Oh, boy... Do I really have to explain everything?"

"Yes," Aqua said sharply, her voice slicing through his theatrics like her Keyblade through shadow. "So start explaining."

Hades sagged, slumping forward as if physically wounded by the demand.

"Ugh. Fine. Tough crowd."

He straightened, pacing in a slow circle with exaggerated flair.

"Ever since this fine little piece of the world got yanked into the void between time and space—White Space, liminal realm, existential limbo, take your pick—things have gone full bananas. We're talkin' time loops, new monsters appearing, illusions... and all of it courtesy of that charming killjoy Mephiles and his shiny red accessory, the Phantom Ruby."

He spun dramatically, arms wide.

"It distorts reality, twists memories, bends the rules of physics into spaghetti," Hades said casually, twirling one finger in lazy circles. "You ever been chased by your own shadow? Not a metaphor."

Zack gave Aqua a wary, sidelong glance.

"So... this Mephiles guy is behind this too?"

Aqua didn't respond immediately. Her expression, tight-lipped and grim, answered clearly enough.

Hades' smirk widened.

"He's pulling the strings. Me? Eh, I'm just the unwilling landlord." His voice turned mockingly sympathetic. "But hey, you beat the trials you find your precious Keyhole. You fail, and… well, let's just say the Underworld suddenly has plenty of vacancies."

"You mean we wouldn't be able to leave?" Zack asked flatly.

Hades snapped his fingers, pointing directly at Zack.

"Bingo for SOLDIER boy over here!"

Gawain stepped forward, his swords at the ready.

"A petty trap. I expected more cunning from one who calls himself a god."

Hades tilted his head, eyeing the armoured knight with genuine amusement.

"Y'know, it's funny that you ended up here of all places. Greek mythology meets Arthurian legend, who would've guessed?" He leaned closer, squinting theatrically down at Gawain's face. "Then again, you kinda remind me of a certain knucklehead I know…"

Aqua and Zack exchanged confused glances.

Gawain stiffened, immediately raising his twin blades, his voice ringing with pride and indignation.

"Speak with respect, dark deity! I am Sir Gawain, Knight of the Round Table!"

Hades burst into laughter, nearly doubling over with exaggerated amusement.

"Oh—Oh, this guy! Yep, definitely sounds exactly like that stubborn knucklehead too!"

With his laughter fading, Hades turned towards Aqua, his smirk broadening, eyes glinting knowingly.

"So, Nobody... you up for it?"

Aqua's expression faltered, a flicker of surprise flashing across her face.

"Wait, how did you—"

"Know you're a Nobody?" Hades smoothly interrupted. He shrugged, feigning innocence. "Well, for starters, I'm great at eavesdropping. But honestly? Last time we met, you had this big ol' heart overflowing with that selfless hero shtick—trust me, it's painfully obvious that's long gone."

Aqua's eyes narrowed, frustration and quiet sadness mingling in her gaze as she turned her face slightly away.

Hades raised his hands quickly, pretending alarm.

"Whoa, whoa! Hey, no need to get all gloomy on me. I didn't say it was a bad look."

Gawain stepped closer, his voice unexpectedly gentle, a stark contrast to his earlier bravado.

"Lady Aqua, take heed. You have already proven your valor, heart or none."

Zack nodded emphatically, laying a supportive hand on her shoulder.

"Exactly. You don't need a heart to prove who you are. You've already shown us enough."

Aqua glanced between them, their sincerity clear. She straightened, resolve flooding back into her expression as she faced Hades directly once more, voice steady and determined.

"I will save this world," Aqua said firmly, tightening her grip on the Keyblade. "Heart or no heart, I'll show you what I'm capable of."

Hades' blue flames flared brighter with mock excitement, and he shadowboxed the air playfully.

"Woo-hoo! That's the spirit, Blue! Knew you had it in ya!" He spun around dramatically, robes flowing theatrically as he drifted back towards the shadowy walkway behind him. "Now, if you three noble heroes would kindly follow me into my distorted abode, there's plenty of reality-bending fun waiting for you."

As Hades retreated into the shadows of the tunnel, darkness intensified, mingling with unnatural emerald-green tendrils of smoke and mist. A chill seeped from within, a clear indication of the Underworld's unsettling influence.

Aqua stepped forward without hesitation, calm resolve etched onto her features.

"Stay focused," she said quietly to Zack and Gawain. "Whatever illusions the Ruby creates, remember who you are."

"Got it," Zack replied, raising his sword again and rolling his shoulders. He grinned lightly. "Nothing says fun like distorted nightmares, right?"

"Indeed," Gawain sighed heavily, though he readied his swords once more. "I suppose I've faced stranger."

They moved together towards the opening to the Underworld. The darkness expanded eagerly to swallow them, tendrils of shadow wrapping and swirling as though alive.

Ahead, Hades' laughter echoed, amused and sinister in equal measure.

"Keep your wits," Aqua warned softly.

Zack nudged her arm gently, giving an encouraging smile.

"Hey, don't worry. We'll get through this. And afterward, we're still having that date."

Aqua gave him a pointed, but not entirely unamused look.

"Let's get out alive first."

Gawain strode forward bravely, unfazed by the shifting shadows around him.

"Let whatever darkness awaits know: our courage will not falter."

The shadows engulfed them fully, and the tunnel to the Underworld sealed behind them, plunging the Coliseum into complete silence.

The Phantom Ruby Trials were about to begin.

Another chapter down! Part 1 of 2 for the Olympus Coliseum/Underworld arc is complete.

Thanks so much for the views and support. It really means a lot seeing people follow along and get into this crossover madness.

GameMax10 - The Shadow FFVII will be it's own story. But one last scene in the upcoming chapters before I complete a 2/3 part story on the team's efforts in the trapped Midgar.

Terrence Johnny Stanford - Thanks again and yes I agree, our crossover has gone well.

So yes, Sir Gawain has arrived! This is the same variant from my Terrence Johnny Stanford's story Lancelot Generations, and much like our Mirror Hallway cameo work earlier, we're continuing to bridge our universes together with fun crossovers and some connected lore. Gawain brings in some much-needed Knuckles energy (Knux fans rise up!), and I've always enjoyed Sonic and the Black Knight, so it felt right bringing him in for some knightly drama and epic duels.

Speaking of drama, that scene where Gawain almost ends it all? It's a tweaked nod to the original game where he tries to fall on his sword after being bested by Sonic. In our version, the motivation is different: not because he lost, but because he was healed by someone he thought was an enemy. For Gawain, it's about honour. In his code, to be healed by an opponent is a sign of defeat so deep it tarnishes everything he stands for. That clash between pride and mercy? It was a key theme I wanted to explore here.

Also, Zack's back! A slightly older version of him from BBS, rocking his 2nd Class SOLDIER uniform. This Zack is from the Blue Blur Saga timeline, and while his fate is still a mystery, he's here to bring charm, strength, and flair. His banter with Aqua, and later with Gawain, is just the kind of energy I love writing.

Finally, Hades returns, in full sarcastic glory. He knows the world's in White Space limbo but still manages to be the worst tour guide ever. He's the one pointing them to the Phantom Ruby Trials.

Nice nod to the first story where Hades tried to bring Knuckles over to the dark side during the Phil Cup. Referencing knowing a 'Knucklehead' he knows is a fun nod to the Echidna, but also it's a line taken from Sonic and the Black Knight - when Sonic see's Sir Gawain for the first time.

Huge shoutout to Terrence Johnny Stanford for the brainstorming and multiverse synergy. If you caught any other references or details—drop a comment!

See you next chapter. Bring on the Trials
