Chapter 8
Dozens of goblins carried massive instruments of torture on their shoulders bringing them to the Great Goblin.
"Bones will be shattered, necks will be wrung! You'll be beaten and battered, from racks you'll be hung. You will lie down here and never be found, down in the deep of Goblin-town."
One of the goblins was examining the weapons and he picked up Thorin's sword sliding it an inch out of its sheath. Recognizing the sword, he gasped in horror and threw it down. It landed in front of all of the goblins and they howled in fear.
The Great Goblin ran rapidly to his throne, trampling many goblins in his way. "I know that sword! It is the Goblin-Cleaver, the Biter, the blade that sliced a thousand necks."
The rest of the Goblins began to whip the dwarves with ropes and leapt at them.
Aramyre brought her hands up trying to fight the goblins back.
"Slash them! Beat them! Kill them! Kill them all! Cut off his head!"
The goblins grabbed Thoring holding him down. One pulled out his knife preparing to behead him.
Aramyre looked up when there was an explosion of bright light. She gets knocked down to the ground hard. She slowly looked up at the other dwarves seeing Gandalf there.
"Take up arms. Fight. Fight!"
The dwarves quickly got up to their feet and began to fight the goblins.
Aramyre grabbed her sword from the ground, her eyes blazing with fire for the fight ahead of them.
Gandalf killed many of the goblins with either his sword or staff.
"He wields the Foe-Hammer, the Beater, bright as daylight!"
Some of the dwarves reached their pile of weapons and began to toss weapons to each other.
They used their weapons to go through the hordes of goblins that were around them.
Oin managed to reclaim his hearing trumpet even though it was flattened.
Nori landed on the floor and the Great Goblin ran at him and swung his mace.
"Nori!"
Thorin jumped forward and deflected the Great Goblin's blow causing him to stumble backward and fall off the edge of the platform into the depths below.
Aramyre blew her hair back as she fought next to Kili protecting each other. She ducked when a Goblin went to attack it back lower, knocking it away from her. "Gandalf, we have to move!"
"Follow me. Quick! Run!"
They cut down the goblins around them, the dwarves and Aramyre followed Gandalf along the pathway leading them away from the throne room. They ran through the suspended passageways of Goblin Town with hundreds of Goblins running after them.
"Quickly!"
"Faster!"
Dwalin saw several goblins running at them in front of them. "Post!" He and some of the dwarves cut a guardrail post from the side of the path. They held it in front of them like a massive spear so they could knock down as many goblins as possible. "Charge!" He and the others charge at the oncoming goblins sweeping them away. Dwalin pulled out his axes and began knocking aside the goblins.
Aramyre swung her sword, knocking some of the goblins away as the others began to do the same.
Gloin hit one goblin who fell and landed on another suspended path breaking the path and dropping all of the goblins into the darkness below.
They fought the goblins around them with various weapons and their fighting styles.
Several goblins snarl as they swing on the ropes towards the company.
"Cut the ropes!" Thorin ordered.
He and some of the dwarves and Aramyre cut the ropes holding the raised platform in place.
The platform fell forward, entangling the goblins on the ropes.
Kili deflected some arrows with his swords. He grabbed a nearby ladder and dropped it on the oncoming goblins. He and some of the dwarves ran forward using the ladder and the goblins it had trapped. They approach a missing area of the path, the goblins fall down into the darkness; the ladder, however, acts as a bridge for them to cross to the rest of the path.
Soon they crossed it and Dwalin broke the ladder preventing the goblins from crossing it and chasing after them.
"Quickly!"
They continued to run through the maze-like paths to get to a section of the path that was suspended by ropes above. They sliced some of the ropes and the pathway swung away from the rest of the path approaching a new path for them to take.
"Jump!" Thorin shouted over the noise.
Several of them managed to jump to the other path.
Aramyre jumped catching the edge and hoisted herself up with a grunt of energy. She wasn't about to fall into the cavern below. She looked back with wide eyes as the path swung back and goblins hoarded onto it. She held her breath as the path came back and the others were able to join them.
The dwarves that now crossed cut the ropes causing the path that was swinging to fall with the goblins upon it. They continue running through the tunnels, killing all the goblins in their way.
Gandalf strikes a rock above them with his staff, causing the rock to fall down and begin rolling in front of the Company, squashing all the goblins in their way.
Soon, they approach a bridge between two walls of the cavern. As they try to cross it, the Great Goblin suddenly breaks through from underneath the bridge and pulls himself up onto the bridge, in front of the Company. As the Company pauses, hundreds of goblins approach them from all sides.
Aramyre held her sword tightly in her hands. Now how were they going to escape? They needed to try to get out of the Misty Mountains and continue on. She just hoped deep in her heart that she hadn't made a mistake on coming with the company just yet.
"You thought you could escape me?" The great goblin swung his mace twice at Gandalf almost causing him to fall. "What are you going to do now, wizard?"
Gandalf leapt forward and struck the great goblin in the eye with his staff.
The great goblin fell dropping his mace holding his face in pain. "Ow, ow, ow!"
Gandalf stepped forward and sliced the belly of the great goblin causing him to fall to his knees clutching his belly.
"That'll do it."
Gandalf swung his sword again, slicing the neck of the great goblin causing him to fall dead.
His weight caused the bridge to shake. Suddenly the section of the bridge they were on broke away from the rest of the bridge. It started to slide down the side of the cavern. The bridge slides at a terrific speed down the cavern's wall, demolishing everything in its way; the dwarves cling on, screaming in terror.
Aramyre grabbed onto some rope to keep herself from falling into the depths below. She wasn't about to die in this dank place. She wanted to see her brother again once she returned from her business with the dwarves. She just hoped that she was going to be able to.
The bridge slows down and lands at the base of the cavern, breaking apart and burying the dwarves in the timber and wood.
Gandalf gets up from the pile of wreckage and inspects the rest of the dwarves, who are still stuck in the wreckage.
Aramyre got up to her feet letting out a soft breath trying to catch her breath. She sheathed her sword for a moment slowly moving to help the dwarves that were tangled in the timber.
"Well, that could have been worse." Bofur said only to be cut off with the heavy corpse of the great goblin landing on the wreckage that held them in it.
They cried out in pain.
"You've got to be joking!" Dwalin shouted in anger.
Aramyre held her hand out to Kili helping him out of the rubble as the other dwarves got themselves out of the rubble.
Kili gave her a small smile. "Thanks."
Aramyre nodded her head.
Kili looks up and sees thousands of goblins running at them. He knew that it wasn't good that goblins were hoarding their way. They needed to escape. "Gandalf!"
"There's too many! We can't fight them." Dwalin shouted.
"Only one thing will save us: daylight! Come on! Here, on your feet!" Gandalf ordered.
The rest of the dwarves helped each other out of the rubble and ran following Gandalf and Aramyre. They made it outside safely.
"Five, six, seven, eight...Bifur, Bofur...that's ten...Fili, Kili...that's twelve...and Bombur - that makes thirteen. Our ranger makes 14. Where's Bilbo? Where is our Hobbit? Where is our hobbit?!"
"Curse the halfling! Now he's lost?!" Dwalin said, looking around.
"I thought he was with Dori!" Gloin said, looking at Dori.
"Don't blame me!"
"Well, where did you last see him?" Gandalf asked, looking at them hoping that someone had seen him.
"I think I saw him slip away, when they first collared us." Nori pointed out.
"What happened exactly? Tell me!"
"I'll tell you what happened. Master Baggins saw his chance and he took it! He's thought of nothing but his soft bed and his warm hearth since first he stepped out of his door! We will not be seeing our Hobbit again. He is long gone." Thorin said, shaking his head.
Suddenly Bilbo came out of hiding. "No, he isn't."
Aramyre let out a breath of relief. She was happy to see the hobbit in one piece.
The dwarves look up in shock and relief.
Gandalf laughed before speaking. "Bilbo Baggins! I've never been so glad to see anyone in my life!"
Bilbo came forward to the group and patted Balin on the shoulder affectionately. He had to admit that he was glad to be back in the group. Perhaps he still needed to be there to prove himself to Thorin.
"Bilbo, we'd given you up!" Kili said as he stood next to his brother and Aramyre.
"How on earth did you get past the Goblins?!" Fili asked curiously, wondering how a hobbit who had no fighting skills made it through such a mess.
"How, indeed." Dwalin said, eyeing the hobbit.
Bilbo gave a nervous laugh and put something into his pocket.
"Well, what does it matter? He's back!" Gandalf said, looking at the company.
"It matters! I want to know: why did you come back?" Thorin questioned looking at the hobbit.
"Look, I know you doubt me, I know you always have. And you're right, I often think of Bag End. I miss my books. And my armchair. And my garden. See, that's where I belong. That's home. And that's why I came back, cause you don't have one. A home. It was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can."
Gandalf smiled happily that Bilbo had changed so much during this quest and so far it was for the better.
"That's mighty amerable of you Bilbo." Aramyre said softly, feeling the clench in her heart knowing that getting their home back was something that needed to be done. Even if she couldn't get her own home back.
