Chapter 4: The Packing Continues... Some More...
At the Stein household, things looked deceptively calm. That illusion shattered the moment you stepped into the kitchen and saw Benny hunched over a sea of camping gear and color-coded checklists, muttering to himself like he was prepping for a FEMA inspection. Years of being with Luan had turned Benny from a somewhat easygoing guy into an overly anxious bundle of nerves.
"Okay." He muttered squinting at a laminated sheet titled 'Flood Preparedness'. "Waterproof tarp, watertight bins, sealed rations, ponchos, backup ponchos…"
Luan placed a tentative hand on her husband's shoulder. "Whoa there, stud. I think you've covered everything short of a biblical flood."
A biblical flood! How could I forget?!" Benny cried, clutching the sides of his head in panic.
Luan tried to stay positive — she really did — but deep down, she knew she had no one to blame for the way Benny turned out but herself. If she'd just known when to quit back then, maybe he wouldn't be the doomsday prepper he was now. Her last big prank had ended with both Benny and Scoots getting launched off a bridge. Thankfully, Scoots dropped the lawsuit and Benny survived getting his skull cracked.
"I'm going to go check on Liby." She said gently, kissing the place where his hair now hid the plate they'd put in. "You just try and relax, sweetie."
"This is a freakin Loud family camping trip, Luan!" Benny shouted in exasperation as she walked off to find their daughter.
In the dining room Liby sat with her laptop checking the campsite's safety instructions. "If we get chased by a moose, should I climb a tree, or just accept my fate?" She asked without looking up. "Because I Googled it, and spoiler alert, either way, it ends badly."
"Hm, well if a flying squirrel shows up I'm sure a nice couple of Russian spies will come along to help." Luan joked.
Liby glared. "Ha-ha, very funny, Mom."
Luan gave her a lopsided smile. "That's me. Funny Mom. Within reason." She said as she headed off.
Across the room Connor McBride gave his girlfriend a confused look. "Flying squirrel? Russian spies? Am I missing something?"
"It's an old cartoon my mom used to watch with my grandpa when she was little. Rocko and Bull… something or other." Liby replied turning her attention to her boyfriend. "She showed it to me once but the graphics were horrible."
"Weird. Anyway, jerky or Twizzlers?" Connor asked, holding up a couple of bags.
"Why not both?" Liby answered.
Connor packed the snacks into her bag with a shrug. "Guess I'll just have to survive these two weeks without you."
Liby smirked. "You'll survive. Somehow."
For a moment, the looming chaos of the trip didn't feel quite so heavy.
To be continued...
