Year 2024: April 18
Haru Season
Layla stood at the entrance to the school grounds, her eyes slowly sweeping over the vast, aged campus before her. The old-fashioned architecture, with its weathered stone walls, towering spires, and sprawling courtyards, held a certain charm that intrigued her.
It looked like something out of an ancient tale, a world painted in muted hues, and she couldn't help but appreciate the intricate details carved into the archways and the gentle curves of the iron gates. There was history here, a palpable one that seemed to whisper secrets from the past through the moss-covered bricks.
Despite the curious glances and the occasional suspicious stare thrown her way by passing students, she couldn't help but feel a quiet sense of wonder.
The place was ancient, filled with history, yet it somehow carried an unspoken energy, an energy she could feel humming through the air, almost like magic but different, subtler, and more elusive.
She sensed it in the soft rustle of leaves stirred by a breeze that seemed to come from nowhere, in the warmth of the sun that broke through the scattered clouds above.
It wasn't her world, but it held a charm that she was determined to appreciate.
She adjusted the strap of her designer handbag over her shoulder and sighed softly, her thoughts lingering on the unfamiliar surroundings. She saw a catalog of designer clothing and items of this world and decided to take note so no one would be suspicious of her accessories.
"So, this is where we'll be staying?" she mused aloud, her voice barely above a whisper. She tilted her head slightly, trying to see the beauty in the stark stone structures and shadowed pathways. "It's got... its own appeal," she said, though there was a hint of disappointment that coloured her words.
The world she came from was so much brighter, so much more alive with colour and magic. This world, by comparison, felt more muted, like a painting faded by time, its vibrancy long lost.
Kaien, the school's principal, stood beside her with his hands casually tucked into the deep pockets of his navy-blue coat. He chuckled under his breath at her words, his eyes crinkling with a warm amusement.
"Well, you're a fairy," he reminded her with a soft grin, his tone light and teasing. "You can't really compare this place to the colourful world you come from." He spread his arms in a grand gesture, as if painting an imaginary rainbow across the sky to emphasise the vast difference between her world and this one.
Layla hummed in agreement, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Fair point," she admitted. Her gaze softened as she looked at the buildings before her. "Still, I'm actually excited. It's been a long time since I've had the chance to explore a place like this."
There was a flicker of something mischievous in her eyes, her mood shifting in a heartbeat. "Being a guardian should be a breeze. And besides," she continued, casting a sideways glance at Nabu, who had been walking beside them with an air of casual indifference, "it looks like all the girls here are head over heels for you. Maybe you'll even take one of them home to marry," she added rather rudely, her frown deepening in annoyance.
Nabu frowned back at her, his eyes narrowing with irritation as he caught the jab. His voice was calm but carried an unmistakable edge. "As long as I don't have to marry you, I'm fine with that," he shot back, his sarcasm mirroring hers.
Layla's smile faltered just slightly, her eyebrow arching, her expression turning icy for a brief moment before she masked it. She opened her mouth to retort, but before she could speak, Kaien, who had been walking ahead, turned back with an exasperated sigh.
"Please, let's not bring up marriage," Kaien muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. "You two are just ordinary humans, at least, that's the story we're going with. Your wealthy parents sent you here from South Africa to train under me after I saw you two fighting off a mutant Level E vampire, and I recruited you both to join the hunters association. But to anyone who's not a hunter or doesn't know about vampires, you're just foreign students looking to experience Japan and its culture while living with their favourite family friend." He paused, his gaze flickering between them with a knowing look. "It'll be much easier if you two drop the whole marriage talk. It's better if you act like siblings, understand?"
Layla and Nabu exchanged a quick, silent glance, communicating wordlessly before nodding in agreement. This was their cover story, after all, and they were expected to play the part. They'd been briefed thoroughly last night, but Kaien's final remark still amused her, and she found herself holding back a laugh.
"Got it," Layla said with a small nod, her voice sweetened with exaggerated compliance. "Sibling bond. We'll be the picture of family harmony." She cast another sly glance at Nabu, her tone dripping with mock sincerity.
He shot her a look, clearly unamused but willing to play along. "Fine. Sibling bond," he muttered under his breath.
With that, they moved forward, stepping into the vast halls of the school. The cool air inside the building carried the scent of aged wood and dust, the signature aroma of a place where countless students had come and gone, leaving behind only echoes of their presence.
Kaien led them to their lockers, his voice echoing slightly in the wide hallway as he explained the layout of the school. Layla and Nabu nodded along, absorbing the information, though Layla's eyes often wandered, taking in the new environment with a mixture of curiosity and caution.
Finally, they reached the door of their classroom. Kaien nodded at them, a subtle gesture of reassurance, and then pushed the door open, leading them inside.
The moment they crossed the threshold, the usual hum of conversation died out abruptly, replaced by an almost eerie silence. The students, who had been chatting animatedly, all turned to face the newcomers. The room was filled with curious stares, some intrigued, others wary, and a few outright sceptical.
Layla felt the weight of their gazes, but instead of shrinking back, she stood a little taller. Her eyes met those of her classmates, a friendly smile tugging at her lips, a smile that reached her eyes, warm and genuine. There was something undeniably striking about her presence.
Her aura, the way she held herself, radiated confidence and grace. Her attire was different as well, she wore her uniform in her own unique style, pairing the standard skirt with mid-thigh platform black heels with red ties as laces.
Her red ribbon tie hung loosely, and another red ribbon was tied at the very end of her curly knee-length reddish-brown hair, which swayed as she moved and her blazer was opened to reveal her tucked-in white shirt that accentuated her curvy frame and medium-sized breast.
As her eyes scanned the room, she couldn't help but notice the way the boys were staring at her, wide eyes, flushed cheeks. It wasn't surprising, her exotic features and the subtle glow of her power made her seem otherworldly.
Nabu, however, was less enthusiastic about being the centre of attention. He kept his gaze level and detached, sweeping over the room without making eye contact.
His uniform was modified as well, the top three buttons of his shirt undone, and his blazer hung wide open. He wore his floor-length hair in a neat braid, and despite his attempt at being inconspicuous, his towering 6'6" form made him impossible to overlook. The way the girls' eyes followed him made him inwardly groan. This was going to be a long day.
Kaien cleared his throat, shattering the silence that had enveloped the classroom. "Well, class," he began, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife, "these are our new guardians from South Africa, Layla and Nabu Khumalo. Treat them well, alright?"
The class remained quiet for a heartbeat longer before the whispers began, hushed voices buzzing with curiosity. The students exchanged glances, some looking impressed while others seemed unsure of what to make of these newcomers.
Layla and Nabu stood at the front, their posture relaxed despite the attention.
Layla's smile remained, her eyes sparkling with a hint of warmth. "It's an honour to be here," she said, her voice smooth and friendly. "I'm Layla Khumalo, and this is my 'older brother,' Nabu." She added the title with just the right amount of teasing, though her tone carried an air of mystery that seemed to intrigue some of the students even more.
She noticed that most of the girls were focused on Nabu, and why wouldn't they be? He was tall, mysterious, and undeniably attractive, with an air of quiet confidence that drew people in.
Nabu gave a slight bow, his expression calm and cool. "Nabu Khumalo," he said, his voice deep and steady, carrying a quiet authority.
He met a few curious stares head-on, his eyes betraying nothing, and then straightened up, his demeanor unreadable.
The teacher, a tall woman with long dark hair, stepped forward, her smile warm but her eyes sharp. "Welcome to our class. I'm Yuna Tanaka, your homeroom teacher," she said, her voice kind but carrying a firm note of authority. She gestured to the rows of desks. "You're welcome to sit wherever you'd like. There's a seat open at the back."
Layla and Nabu exchanged glances before nodding and making their way down the aisle to the back of the room. As they settled into their seats, Layla couldn't help but notice the whispers still buzzing around them, the way eyes lingered on her and her brother.
Some of the boys seemed unable to look away, their expressions a mixture of curiosity and admiration.
Layla was used to attention, but there was something different about being in this world, the way her presence seemed to disrupt the mundane routine of the students around her.
As the lesson began, Layla tried to focus, but her thoughts kept drifting, her mind wandering to the strange new world she found herself in.
This place was so different from home, its energy both exciting and unsettling. She could feel eyes on her still, her classmates stealing glances, some trying to figure her out, others simply admiring her. And then there was Nabu beside her, leaning slightly closer.
"Well, this is going to be interesting," he whispered, his voice low enough for only her to hear.
Layla stifled a laugh, her lips curving into a grin. "That's one way to put it," she whispered back. She could sense that despite his calm exterior, Nabu was just as uncertain as she was about how things would unfold.
Their classmates seemed to warm up to them gradually. As the lesson went on, a few of the boys gave Layla respectful nods, impressed, no doubt, by the way she navigated the subject matter with ease. She was more than just a pretty face, and they were beginning to see that.
When the bell finally rang, signalling the end of class, the students moved quickly, gathering their things and chattering amongst themselves as they filed out. Layla, Nabu, and another student, a silver-haired boy who had been staring at them throughout the lesson, lingered behind.
Nabu stood, stretching his arms above his head, his movements casual but deliberate, as though trying to shake off the tension that had built up from all the attention.
He slung his bag over his shoulder, giving Layla a sideways grin. "I'd rather be late to the next class than risk being ambushed by those girls again," he joked, though there was an underlying hint of unease in his eyes. "They're intense."
Layla laughed, tossing her hair back over her shoulder. "Tell me about it. The boys here are on a whole other level of creepy," she said, her tone light but with a glimmer of caution. "I can only imagine how much worse they get when evening rolls around."
Nabu groaned, rolling his eyes in mock horror. "Don't remind me. I'm already dreading it. Let's just get out of here before we get trapped again."
"Alright, alright, I'm coming," Layla replied, her voice tinged with playful exasperation as she gathered her things. Just before she turned to leave, she glanced over her shoulder, her eyes meeting the silver-haired boy's gaze.
She gave him a warm, lingering smile, a subtle invitation in her expression, a gesture of friendliness that she hoped would ease some of the tension she felt from him. There was something about him that intrigued her, something guarded yet intensely observant.
Zero felt a blush creeping up on his cheeks. He swallowed, still silent, his eyes narrowing in contemplation. They seemed so... normal on the surface. Layla, with her friendly smile and easy laugh, and Nabu, calm and collected, just two new students blending in with the crowd.
But there was something about them that gnawed at him, something that didn't quite fit. Their presence carried a weight, an inexplicable gravity that went beyond the ordinary.
The strangest part was their scent. It was subtle but unmistakable, a faint aroma that lingered in the air around them, unlike anything he'd ever encountered. It wasn't human, and it wasn't vampiric. It was… calming, like the sea mixed with something sweet and earthy.
Layla's scent, in particular, was nearly intoxicating, a delicate, fruity sweetness that seemed to envelop him, stirring an inexplicable craving he had to fight against. He found himself holding his breath, momentarily entranced.
Whatever they were, one thing was becoming increasingly clear to Zero, they were neither human nor vampire. They were something else entirely, and that unknown quality set them apart like an unspoken challenge.
"What are they?" he murmured to himself, his voice barely above a whisper, but the question hung heavily in the empty classroom.
OoO
During recess, Layla and Nabu found themselves the centre of attention. A large bustling crowd formed, surrounded on all sides by eager students clamouring for their attention.
Their striking appearances certainly drew eyes, their exotic features and confident demeanour set them apart, but it was their flawless command of Japanese, despite being newcomers from abroad, that truly captivated their peers.
Whispered conversations and intrigued glances circulated around them, laced with admiration and fascination.
'Thank the universe for magic' Layla mused inwardly, maintaining a polite, albeit strained, smile as the crowd around them continued to swell.
She and Nabu had been taught a spell from a young age that eased the learning of new languages, a handy trick when faced with language barriers in unfamiliar realms. Without it, navigating this new environment would have been infinitely more challenging.
A boy edged a bit too close for comfort, his eyes bright with curiosity. "Where exactly are you from?" he asked excitedly, his enthusiasm overriding any sense of personal space. Layla took a subtle step back, lightly placing a hand on his shoulder to create some distance. Her discomfort was palpable, though she tried to mask it with a nervous laugh.
"We don't really like talking about our home," she admitted, a tiny bead of sweat forming at her temple. Scanning the sea of expectant faces, she searched for an escape. "But yes, we've moved to Japan to start new lives. Nabu's interested in science, and I'm planning to pursue dancing!"
Her response ignited a fresh wave of excitement. The crowd leaned in closer, eyes wide with awe as if they were in the presence of celebrities.
"I can totally see Nabu becoming a scientist," gushed a blue-eyed girl with long brown hair, her cheeks flushed.
"And Layla as a dancer? That makes so much sense with those legs!" her identical twin squealed, practically bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"I wish I could pull off wearing those boots," a long-haired girl with ginger hair sighed longingly. "I need those legs first."
As the chatter grew louder, with more students pressing in to ask questions and offer compliments, Layla felt a slight wave of claustrophobia wash over her. The crowd was becoming overwhelming. She glanced at Nabu, who gave her a subtle nod, equally eager for an escape.
Just then, a commanding voice sliced through the din, bringing an abrupt hush over the group.
"Isn't it enough that you lot fawn over the Night Class students? Must you crowd around these two as well?" A silver-haired boy with piercing lavender eyes approached, his very presence causing the gathered students to shrink back.
His gaze was sharp, authoritative, and it was clear he was not to be trifled with. "Give them some space," he ordered curtly.
Instantly, the crowd began to disperse, students mumbling apologies as they scurried away. Layla and Nabu exchanged relieved glances, grateful for the unexpected reprieve.
"Thank you," Layla said softly, her eyes meeting the boy's. There was a depth in his gaze that intrigued her, something guarded, yet intensely observant.
The silver-haired boy regarded them coolly. "The Headmaster wants to see you both," he informed them, his tone neutral. He turned slightly, gesturing for them to follow. "I'm Zero Kiryuu, by the way. Future president of the Hunter Association."
"Pleasure to meet you," Nabu replied, a hint of a smirk playing on his lips as he raised an eyebrow. "We didn't expect you'd be the one to come fetch us. You seem... curious about us."
Zero's expression remained impassive, though his eyes flickered with something akin to suspicion. "Who wouldn't be? You both smell like rainbows and sunshine. Humans don't smell like that. It's... unnatural. You're like something out of a fairy tale."
Layla and Nabu exchanged startled glances. They had anticipated some scrutiny, but not this level of perceptiveness.
Layla tilted her head, her curiosity piqued. "Wait, hold on," she began, her voice soft yet inquisitive. "What do you mean by 'smell like rainbows'? And what do humans normally smell like to you?"
Zero crossed his arms over his chest, his gaze unwavering. "Humans smell like humans, blood, sweat, the natural scents of their bodies. It's distinct, unmistakable. You two, though..." He paused, searching for the right words. "You smell nothing like that. It's not just sweetness. It's clean, fresh… like standing in a forest after a rainstorm. Or like the ocean mixed with something... magical. It's hard to describe. But you definitely don't smell human."
Layla blinked in surprise, processing his words. Nabu scratched the back of his head, a hint of unease creeping into his posture. "We didn't realise vampires could detect such nuances," Nabu admitted cautiously. "We've encountered a few since we arrived with Kaien, but none mentioned anything about our scent."
"Then they were either incompetent or not paying attention," Zero replied bluntly. He leaned in slightly, his eyes narrowing. "You're not human. So what are you?"
Layla's playful demeanour faltered slightly. She hadn't expected to be so easily read. "You can sense our nature that clearly?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper.
Zero's gaze didn't waver. "It's hard not to. You're... different."
Nabu sighed softly, running a hand through his braids. "Well, so much for keeping a low profile," he said wryly. He met Zero's gaze evenly. "So, what do you intend to do with this information? Keep sniffing us out?"
Zero's eyes flashed with irritation at Nabu's flippant tone. "That depends," he said coolly. "If you're not a threat, I don't care what you are. But if you are-"
"There's no need for hostility," Layla interjected, holding up her hands in a placating gesture. "We're not here to cause trouble. In fact, we're here to protect this place." She offered a small smile. "Think of us as guardians the earth."
Zero studied her for a long moment, scepticism etched into his features. "Guardians of the earth, huh?" he echoed. "That's a new one."
Layla shrugged lightly. "We're full of surprises."
Zero sighed, the tension easing slightly from his shoulders. "Fine. But don't think for a second that I won't be keeping an eye on you. Just because you're not vampires doesn't mean you're harmless."
Layla grinned, nudging Nabu with her elbow. "Looks like we've got ourselves a babysitter."
Nabu chuckled softly, though his eyes remained serious. "We appreciate the warning, Zero. Truly. We didn't expect vampires to be so... perceptive in this realm." He paused, then added with a sly smile, "When the Headmaster told us about you, we thought you'd hold a gun to our heads before even asking for our names."
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of Zero's mouth. "If you smelled like vampires, I might have." His expression sobered. "So, what are you? You're clearly not human."
Layla tapped a finger to her lips thoughtfully. "Well, the Headmaster did say not to tell anyone..." She gave him a teasing wink. "So we shan't. He said we'd tell you when he felt you were mature enough."
Zero huffed, his patience wearing thin. "What's so secretive that you can't talk about it? Are you aliens?" he asked, a hint of sarcasm colouring his tone.
The two shrugged in unison, their expressions deliberately enigmatic. "Can't tell you," they chimed.
Zero rolled his eyes, but didn't press further. "Fine. Keep your secrets," he muttered. "Follow me. The Headmaster is waiting."
They trailed after him through the winding corridors, the atmosphere thick with unspoken questions. Layla couldn't help but steal glances at Zero's rigid posture, intrigued by his stoic demeanour and sharp instincts. There was something compelling about him, a depth she hadn't anticipated.
As they walked, the hallways grew quieter, the distant sounds of chattering students fading into the background. Portraits of former headmasters and distinguished alumni lined the walls, their painted eyes seeming to follow them as they passed. The afternoon sunlight filtered through stained glass windows, casting colourful patterns on the polished wooden floors.
"You're awfully quiet," Nabu remarked casually, breaking the silence.
Zero glanced over his shoulder briefly. "Not much to say," he replied curtly.
Layla smiled softly. "Silence can speak volumes."
Zero didn't respond, but she noticed a slight twitch at the corner of his mouth, as if he were suppressing a retort.
Zero huffed in frustration but held his tongue as he led Layla and Nabu through the quiet corridors towards the Headmaster's office.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the polished wooden floors, and the distant murmur of student chatter faded as they ventured deeper into the administrative wing. Zero's mind raced with questions, his curiosity battling with his irritation.
Upon reaching the ornate double doors of Kaien Cross's office, Zero pushed them open without ceremony. The Headmaster looked up from behind his cluttered desk, a playful pout forming on his lips.
"No 'how are you?' for your dear father?" Kaien teased, adjusting his glasses with a mock sigh. "You're unusually calm for someone who's just encountered beings that aren't human."
Zero shot him a flat look. "They don't fucking smell human," he stated bluntly, cutting straight to the point. "What's this secret they can't tell me?" His eyes flicked towards Layla and Nabu, suspicion evident.
Kaien leaned back in his chair, steepling his fingers thoughtfully. "Their scent is unusual, is it? You're as perceptive as ever, Zero." He cast a knowing glance at the pair beside him. "If they don't mind, perhaps they can enlighten you. It seems they could use a bit of support and supervision. Blending in doesn't appear to be their strong suit."
Nabu rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, his braids swaying slightly. "We try to be discreet... most of the time," he admitted, offering a small, apologetic smile.
Layla giggled softly, clasping her hands innocently in front of her. "See? Not even Zero noticed anything until now," she chimed in, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
Zero raised an eyebrow, his scepticism unabated. "And what exactly am I supposed to have noticed?"
"Magic!" Layla declared enthusiastically, pointing a finger at him with a dramatic flourish. From her fingertip erupted a cascade of colourful sprinkles, enveloping Zero in a shimmering halo of light. The tiny particles danced around him like iridescent fireflies, casting playful reflections on the office walls.
Zero blinked in astonishment, momentarily speechless. "What the-?"
A small, high-pitched voice echoed through the room, interrupting his bewilderment. "Patoo tee?"
All eyes turned towards Kaien's desk, where a tiny creature resembling a baby floated into view. The diminutive being was bathed in a soft, ethereal glow, her delicate wings fluttering gently as she yawned and rubbed her eyes.
"Patootey!" the tiny pixie exclaimed, her face lighting up as she spotted Layla. She zipped through the air with surprising speed, wrapping her miniature arms around Layla's neck in an affectionate embrace.
Layla laughed warmly, reaching up to gently stroke the pixie's cheek. "I missed you too, Piff," she said softly.
Zero stared, wide-eyed, as the adorable creature clung to Layla. "What the... what is that?!" he exclaimed, his usual composure slipping.
At his startled outburst, Piff's lower lip trembled, and she began to wail, her tiny cries filling the room with a surprisingly resonant sound. Zero panicked, waving his hands in a desperate attempt to calm her. "Okay, okay! I'm sorry, P... Piff?" he stammered, unsure of how to address the sobbing pixie.
Piff sniffled, peering at him with large, teary eyes. Suddenly, she broke into a beaming smile. "Poot!" she chirped, launching herself towards Zero. She landed lightly on his shoulder, nuzzling against his cheek affectionately.
Zero felt his cheeks warm as a faint blush spread across them. The pixie's innocent display of affection was disarming, and he found himself at a loss for words. "What... what is Piff?" he managed to ask, his tone considerably softer.
"A pixie," Layla, Nabu, and Kaien replied in unison, their voices harmonising perfectly.
"Pixie..." Zero repeated numbly, attempting to process this new information. His gaze shifted between Layla and Nabu. "And you're telling me that you-" he pointed at Layla, still grappling with the revelation, "are a fairy, and you," his finger moved to Nabu, "are a wizard?"
"Exactly," Nabu confirmed with a satisfied grin. "Though there's a bit more nuance to it."
Layla beamed, her eyes alight with excitement. "You got it right! I'm a fairy," she affirmed cheerfully.
Zero's eyes widened further, his jaw dropping slightly. He rubbed the back of his neck, trying to wrap his mind around the concept. "You've got to be kidding me..." he muttered. "Fairies and wizards? This isn't some children's story."
Kaien chuckled, leaning back comfortably in his chair. "Now it makes sense why you couldn't quite put your finger on what was different about them. They're not from around here."
"Clearly," Zero mumbled, still reeling from the sight of Piff, who was now curiously examining the silver earring in his left ear. "You could've at least mentioned something instead of springing this on me here."
Layla placed a hand on her hip, a playful smile tugging at her lips. "Where's the fun in that? Besides, you didn't exactly ask."
Zero shot her a sidelong glance, though the sensation of Piff's tiny hands patting his cheek made it difficult to maintain his annoyance. "I thought maybe you two were just... unusually cheerful or something. Not full-on magical beings."
Nabu leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Well, we are unusually cheerful," he admitted with a chuckle. "But now you understand why."
Zero shook his head slowly, disbelief still etched on his face. He looked over at Kaien. "And you knew about this the entire time?"
"Of course," Kaien replied with a mischievous grin. "It's part of my job to be informed about these things. Besides, I thought it would be enlightening for you to discover it firsthand."
"Enlightening?" Zero echoed, arching an eyebrow. "More like bewildering."
Kaien shrugged nonchalantly. "Perspective is everything."
Zero sighed, rubbing his temples in an attempt to alleviate the burgeoning headache he felt coming on. "Alright, so what's next? Am I supposed to just pretend none of this is strange and carry on as usual?"
"That's the idea!" Layla said brightly, giving him a thumbs up. "Except we'll sprinkle in a bit of magic here and there to keep things interesting."
"Fantastic," Zero muttered sarcastically. "Because dealing with vampires and hunters wasn't complicated enough."
"Don't worry," Nabu assured him with a wink. "We'll make sure it's an adventure."
Zero glanced at the lingering sparkles in the air, remnants of Piff's magical presence. "Is that why I can see Piff?" he asked, gesturing to the tiny pixie now attempting to braid a strand of his hair.
Layla nodded. "As the guardian of the pixies, I can grant humans the ability to see them. Those leftover sparkles are Piff's magic. Mine dissipated after I cast it on you. Typically, only magical creatures and human children can see pixies."
Kaien observed Zero's bewildered expression with amusement. "It's a lot to take in, isn't it?"
Zero gave a short, incredulous laugh. "That's an understatement. If fairies and wizards existed, we would've known about it by now."
Kaien scratched the back of his head sheepishly. "Well, in this universe, they don't—at least, not commonly. Layla and Nabu come from a different realm altogether."
Zero fixed them with a penetrating stare. "A different realm?"
"Exactly," Nabu confirmed. "We're here on a mission of sorts."
Zero's eyes narrowed. "What kind of mission?"
Before they could answer, Layla turned to Piff, who was now perched atop Zero's head, looking quite pleased with herself. "Piff, would you mind helping us out?"
Piff rubbed her eyes sleepily. "Poof," she yawned, stretching her tiny arms.
"Flashback?" Zero questioned, his scepticism returning. "What are you planning to show me?"
Layla grinned, her eyes alight with anticipation. "Let her show you."
OoO
The hunter wandered aimlessly through the deserted outskirts of town, his boots scuffing against the cracked pavement as he let out a frustrated sigh.
The streets were eerily quiet, the abandoned buildings casting long shadows under the dim glow of flickering streetlights. Boredom gnawed at him, a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled nights he was accustomed to.
Ever since Kaien Cross had single-handedly taken down fifty-eight rogue vampires last week, the supernatural underworld had fallen silent, leaving little for a hunter like him to do.
"Dear Lord," he muttered under his breath, tilting his head back to stare at the overcast sky. The stars were hidden behind a thick blanket of clouds, and the air felt heavy with impending rain. "I could use some excitement." His words were a half-hearted plea, a whispered complaint to the universe as he scanned the empty streets for any sign of disturbance.
As if in response to his wish, a sudden, blinding white light flared at the edge of his vision. Instincts honed from years of hunting kicked in immediately. He spun on his heel, hand darting to the hilt of his sword.
The weapon slid from its sheath with a metallic whisper as he moved swiftly towards the source of the light, his heart pounding with a mix of anticipation and caution.
What he found stopped him dead in his tracks.
Hovering a few feet above the ground was a swirling vortex of light and colour, a portal unlike anything he had ever seen. It was medium-sized but radiated an immense energy that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.
The portal shimmered with hues of white, blue, and purple, the colours intertwining and churning like a storm trapped within a crystal. Sparks of energy crackled around its edges, and the very air seemed to hum with power.
Startled cries pierced the air, snapping him back into action. Without hesitation, he assumed a defensive stance, every muscle in his body coiled and ready to strike. His eyes narrowed as he focused on the portal, waiting to see what would emerge.
Suddenly, two figures tumbled out of the vortex in a chaotic heap, landing unceremoniously on the cracked asphalt. The portal flickered and vanished behind them, leaving only the faint scent of ozone in its wake.
The hunter blinked in astonishment as he took in their appearances.
The first was a striking young woman with dark skin that seemed to glow subtly in the dim light with a turquoise aura surrounding her. She was adorned in an elaborate outfit that was both ethereal and regal.
Her attire consisted of a frilly, blue strapless top decorated with delicate pink accents, hugging her form and accentuating her graceful figure.
A matching skirt flowed from her waist, its layers fluttering gently even without a breeze. Above-the-elbow translucent gloves in a yellow hue adorned her arms, shimmering softly as if woven from starlight.
Her wings were a sight to behold, majestic and intricate, they were outlined with her signature lime green and embellished with pink pearls that caught the light with every slight movement. The wings were filled with shades of yellow and magenta, creating a kaleidoscope of colours that seemed almost too vibrant for the drab surroundings. The forewings appeared doubled, adding depth and complexity, while the tailed hind wings extended elegantly behind her.
Her hair had grown several inches, cascading down her back in luxurious waves with newly added streaks of colour. It was intricately braided around a cyan forehead tiara before flowing into twin pigtails that framed her face. The tiara itself was delicate, adorned with tiny gems that twinkled like stars. On her feet, she wore blue, barefoot-like sandals connected with flower-shaped buttons, adding to her otherworldly appearance. Around her neck hung a Fairy Dust vial,a turquoise drop of water encircled by a light green ring, with numerous blue and white beads hanging from the bottom. The stopper was fashioned from light green beads shaped like two leaves.
Beside her stood a man, his skin matching the rich hue of hers. He wore attire that bore a resemblance to traditional Chinese clothing but with a unique twist. A purple turtleneck, elbow-length tunic decorated with bold yellow stripes covered his torso. The tunic extended down to his knees, outlined with thick yellow lines and split open on both sides for ease of movement. A thick red cloth was tied around his waist like a belt, adding a splash of vibrant colour. He wore deep purple trousers tucked neatly into white shoes that seemed to glow faintly, perhaps imbued with some form of magic. His long, dark hair was pulled back, revealing sharp features and eyes that held both wisdom and mischief.
Though clearly startled from their abrupt arrival, the strangers' initial fear seemed to dissipate quickly. The woman dusted herself off gracefully, her wings folding neatly behind her, while the man adjusted his tunic, his gaze already assessing their surroundings.
The hunter, Kaien Cross, though few called him by his first name, felt his jaw practically hit the floor as he recognised the creatures before him. He had encountered many supernatural beings in his lifetime, but nothing quite like this.
"You're a... fairy!" he blurted out, his voice a mix of astonishment and disbelief.
The woman turned her gaze to him, her eyes a captivating shade of teal that seemed to hold the depths of the ocean. A smirk played on her lips. "And you're very observant," she teased lightly, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear. "My name's Layla."
Beside her, the man let out a soft groan as he straightened up, offering Layla a hand to steady her. "And I'm a wizard," he added dryly, his tone carrying a hint of sarcasm. "Nabu, by the way." He glanced around, his brow furrowing as he took in the unfamiliar surroundings. "Where exactly are we?"
Kaien blinked, still struggling to process the surreal scene before him. "Uh... Earth?" he replied hesitantly, though it sounded more like a question than an answer. "Japan, specifically."
Layla's eyes widened in realization, a mixture of excitement and concern crossing her features. "No wonder they didn't know where we'd end up!" she exclaimed, turning to Nabu. "We're in another universe!"
Nabu grimaced, crossing his arms over his chest. "Great. Just what we needed," he muttered, a note of irritation creeping into his voice. "I hope we're not stuck here after the mission."
Before Kaien could respond, a flurry of tiny, winged creatures zipped out of Nabu's satchel, their movements quick and erratic. The pixies chattered amongst themselves, their voices high-pitched and filled with panic.
One of them, a tiny blue pixie named Digit, pulled out a miniature scanning device that whirred softly. Her eyes widened as she read the data flashing across the screen. "There's no trace of magic here!" she squeaked urgently. "And my gadget is picking up... vampires!"
The other pixies gasped in horror, their tiny bodies trembling as they huddled closer to Layla for protection. Piff, the smallest and most sensitive of the group, burst into tears, clinging to Layla's shoulder and burying her face in Layla's hair.
"Everyone, calm down!" Layla commanded gently, her voice firm yet soothing. She raised a hand, and a soft glow emanated from her palm, enveloping the pixies in a calming aura. "Just because we're in a strange place doesn't mean everything here is a threat." She turned her attention back to Kaien, offering him a polite bow. "Good evening, sir. We seem to have... landed here unexpectedly. Please allow us to introduce ourselves properly."
Kaien cleared his throat, attempting to regain his composure. "I'm Kaien Cross," he introduced himself, inclining his head slightly. "Headmaster of Cross Academy. And... a hunter," he added, though the admission seemed almost redundant given the circumstances.
Layla nodded appreciatively. "A pleasure to meet you, Kaien. As I mentioned, I'm Layla, Fairy of Waves and Princess of Andros." She gestured to Nabu. "This is Nabu, a powerful wizard and-"
"Her fiancé sadly," Nabu interjected with a frown.
Layla shot him a sidelong glance and rolled her eyes. "It's arranged, and like hell I'll marry you! Anyway," she cleared her throat, her expression turning serious, "we're here on an important mission."
Kaien eyed them thoughtfully. "I see. And these are...?" He pointed to the pixies, who were now peeking out cautiously from behind Layla's wings.
"Pixies," Layla explained, smiling gently. "Each one bonded to a fairy or wizard. They're our companions."
Kaien nodded slowly, absorbing the information. "Is there any way you can... conceal yourselves? Appear more... human?" he asked carefully, his mind already racing with the potential complications of their presence.
Layla exchanged a glance with Nabu before nodding. "Of course. We don't wish to draw unnecessary attention." She closed her eyes, and a radiant light enveloped her form. The glow intensified, momentarily obscuring her from view. When the light faded, she stood transformed.
Gone was the fairy attire. Layla now wore a sleek, sleeveless blue dress that ended just above her knees, the fabric shimmering subtly with each movement.
The dress was simple yet elegant, cinched at the waist with a thin silver belt. Her wings had vanished, and her hair, though still long and lustrous, was pulled back into a neat ponytail.
On her feet, she wore white platform boots that added a modern touch to her ensemble. The pixies disappeared into a stylish tote bag slung over her shoulder, the bag itself adorned with delicate patterns resembling constellations.
Nabu followed suit, raising his hands as a soft glow surrounded him. His wizard attire shifted seamlessly into more contemporary clothing.
He now wore a well-fitted navy blue blazer over a crisp white shirt, the top buttons casually undone. Dark trousers and polished shoes completed the look, and his long hair was tied back into a low ponytail.
Kaien blinked in amazement. "That's... impressive," he admitted. "Can anyone else see the pixies?"
"Only magical creatures and human children," Layla replied as she adjusted the strap of her bag. "I assume vampire children might be an exception."
"And vampires in general," Kaien added thoughtfully. "They might sense them. Vampires aren't magical per se, but they have heightened senses that could pick up on... anomalies."
One of the pixies, Tune, a petite fairy with lavender hair and a prim expression, poked her head out of the bag briefly. "Vampires are just creatures," she huffed quietly, her tiny nose wrinkling in disdain.
Layla gave her a gentle pat on the head. "Be nice, Tune."
With a sigh, Layla gestured towards a nearby building. "Perhaps we should continue this conversation somewhere more private," she suggested. "There's much we need to discuss, and I'd rather not do it out in the open."
Kaien nodded in agreement. "My home isn't far from here. We can talk there."
They made their way through the deserted streets, the silence punctuated only by the soft footsteps and the distant hum of the city.
Layla took in the surroundings with keen interest, noting the stark contrast between this world and her own. The lack of ambient magic was disconcerting, but she pushed the thought aside.
Here's a rewritten and expanded version of the scene, including more dialogue and depth into the characters and their motivations:
Upon arriving at Kaien's modest home, the trio settled around a cosy kitchen table. The space was warm and inviting, with the comforting scent of herbs blending with the smell of old books and the faint aroma of brewing tea.
The pixies busied themselves with surprising efficiency, Digit, the blue pixie, zoomed around to fetch tea leaves, while Tune poured hot water from a kettle into delicate porcelain cups. Piff, small and sleepy, watched from Layla's shoulder, letting out tiny yawns.
Kaien leaned back in his chair, his eyes wide with curiosity as he observed the pixies darting about. He couldn't help but marvel at their tiny, deft hands. A mixture of fascination and disbelief settled across his features. He finally cleared his throat, trying to regain focus.
"So," he began, folding his hands on the table in front of him, "perhaps you can tell me more about why you're here."
Layla's expression shifted from her usual calmness to something more serious. She drew a deep breath, then began. "We're here to retrieve ancient artefacts," she explained, her voice low, almost as if she feared to give power to her words. "Powerful items that were scattered across different dimensions by a dark force known as Lord Darkar. He is a deity of pure darkness, a malevolent being that embodies evil itself. He was once thought to have been defeated, but…"
Her eyes turned to Nabu, who continued for her. "Recent disturbances suggest otherwise. We believe he's not only back, but stronger than ever before." His tone was solemn, every word weighed with importance. "He's seeking to gather these artefacts to amplify his power and plunge every realm into chaos, including this one. We followed a lead and ended up here, on your Earth, as it seems this world holds some of these artefacts."
Kaien's brows knitted together, his face a mask of concern. "And you think these artefacts are here, in our world?" he asked, leaning forward.
Layla nodded firmly. "Yes. The most powerful wizard sensed their presence when the portal opened. We can't afford to lose time, Kaien. We need to find them before Lord Darkar does."
Nabu added with a sigh, "But this world is unfamiliar. We need an ally, someone who knows the terrain, someone who can help us navigate without drawing attention. That's where we hope you can come in."
Kaien leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping thoughtfully on the table. "I see," he said, his eyes narrowing in thought. "I can help, yes. But you must understand that this world is… fragile. Humans are blissfully unaware of the existence of beings like vampires. Even the Hunters, those who are supposed to keep them in check, are struggling. Introducing magic like yours will add layers of complexity. The reaction won't be predictable."
Kaien paused, a flicker of concern in his gaze as he looked from Layla to Nabu. "Magical beings like you two would automatically rank above vampires in the hierarchy, you're something new, something powerful.
This could unsettle the delicate balance we've managed to maintain. There are people, vampires and humans alike, who wouldn't have the best intentions if they found out."
Nabu nodded, absorbing Kaien's words. "Understood," he said, his tone respectful. "We'll keep our abilities under wraps as much as possible. We don't want to attract unnecessary attention."
A faint smile touched Kaien's lips, though his eyes remained clouded with worry. "It's also starting to make sense now why the Level E vampires have been acting strangely lately," he mused aloud, almost to himself. "There have been reports of… mutations among them. Something has been affecting them, making them more dangerous, more chaotic." He frowned deeply, looking back at Layla and Nabu. "This Lord Darkar… I suspect he's behind this somehow. The mutations started a month ago, right around the time you said disturbances began."
Nabu's brow furrowed, exchanging a concerned glance with Layla. "Level E vampires?" he repeated, curiosity and worry mingling in his voice. "What exactly are Level Es?"
Kaien sighed deeply, taking a moment to collect his thoughts. "Level E vampires are inherently unstable," he began, his tone taking on a more instructive quality. "They're former humans who were bitten and couldn't handle the transformation. They lost their sanity in the process and became feral, dangerous and unpredictable. They're the lowest class among vampires, and if left unchecked, they become uncontrollable threats."
Layla's eyes darkened with sympathy. "So they're victims in a way, twisted by a curse they couldn't control?" she asked softly.
Kaien nodded grimly. "Precisely. They are victims, but also a threat. The Hunters have to deal with them, either by restraining them or… eliminating them." His voice grew quieter at the last part. "It's never easy. And now, with these mutations, they're becoming even more dangerous."
Nabu's brows drew together thoughtfully. "You mentioned Level Es as if there are other classes. Are there different levels to vampires?"
Kaien gave a slight smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Indeed. The vampire society is structured by levels. Level E is at the bottom, those who were turned and couldn't maintain their humanity. Above them are the 'Common' vampires, those who were also turned but managed to maintain control. Then, we have the 'Aristocrats', vampires of noble lineage, often born into it, possessing unique abilities and powers. And at the top are the 'Purebloods.' They are rare and extremely powerful, the ones who can turn others into vampires. Their bloodlines are pure, unmixed with human ancestry. They often lead vampire society."
Layla's eyes widened slightly. "So, even within the vampire community, there are divisions. Power dynamics, hierarchies."
Kaien nodded gravely. "Exactly. And it's delicate, to say the least. Purebloods are powerful enough to keep order, but there's always friction, especially with humans involved. It's why the Hunter Association exists, to maintain balance. Our job is to keep rogue vampires in check and to ensure the existence of vampires remains a secret from the general public."
Nabu looked pensive, his eyes narrowing as he took in the explanation. "So there's a whole network of Hunters?" he asked. "How do you coordinate all of this without anyone finding out?"
Kaien smiled wryly. "The Hunter Association has existed for generations, since the time of the original vampire wars. It's an underground society, completely hidden from the public. We operate in secrecy, and only a handful of people outside of our circle know about us. Our duty is to maintain peace, not just between humans and vampires, but within vampire society as well. Sometimes we have to rely on alliances with the Aristocrats and Purebloods to keep things from spiralling out of control."
Layla nodded slowly, absorbing everything Kaien had said. "So, not only do you have to deal with rogue vampires, but also navigate alliances and maintain a fragile balance between two worlds," she murmured, her tone filled with admiration. "That's… an incredible responsibility."
Kaien gave her a tired but appreciative smile. "It is. And it's why we need to tread carefully. Your arrival here adds another layer of complexity. If the wrong people find out who and what you are, it could lead to… chaos. I can help you, but only if we are discreet."
Nabu sighed, leaning back in his chair with a wry smile. "No pressure, right?" he quipped, though there was a hint of nervousness beneath his humour.
Kaien laughed softly. "No pressure," he agreed. "But I have a feeling you two can handle it. If anyone can pull this off without causing a catastrophe, it's you."
For the next few hours, they sat in the warm glow of Kaien's kitchen, exchanging stories of their respective worlds. Layla spoke of Andros, the magical realm of oceans, its vibrant underwater cities and ever-flowing energy.
She described the mermaids who roamed the waters, the schools of enchanted fish that could dance through the air. Nabu shared stories of his magical training, of the different lands and the magic that connected them all. He described the diversity of his universe, of the many realms and worlds that coexisted, linked by magic.
Kaien, in turn, shared insights into the complexities of human and vampire relations in his world. He spoke of the Hunter Association, of the battles fought in the shadows to keep humans safe and ignorant of the dangers lurking around them. He spoke of Purebloods and the uneasy alliance between hunters and certain vampires, a collaboration based not on trust, but on necessity.
As the evening wore on, a newfound camaraderie began to form. Though they hailed from different realms and different realities, there was an undeniable bond, a shared commitment to protect life, no matter the cost.
Eventually, Kaien stood, stretching slightly, his muscles aching from sitting in one place for so long. "We should make arrangements for you to stay here discreetly," he suggested. "I can enrol you as transfer students at Cross Academy. It will provide cover for your presence and allow you access to the resources that might help in your search." He paused, considering them both. "You'll also be hunters-in-training, under my supervision. That means you'll need weapons, vampire weapons. We can start crafting them soon."
Layla exchanged a glance with Nabu, her eyes gleaming with determination. "That sounds like a solid plan," she agreed. "We'll need all the help we can get."
Kaien nodded, his expression turning serious once more. "Just remember, blending in is key. The Academy is a delicate environment. There are both humans and vampires there, and neither group knows about the other. Use your abilities sparingly, and always be mindful of who might be watching."
Nabu nodded, his expression matching the gravity of Kaien's tone. "We understand. We'll be careful."
Kaien smiled, the warmth returning to his eyes. "Then welcome to our world," he said, extending his hand.
Layla reached out, shaking his hand, followed by Nabu. In that simple gesture, a pact was formed, an alliance between worlds, bound by a shared goal and a desire for peace.
Later that night, as they settled into the small guest room Kaien had provided, Layla found herself standing by the window, staring out at the unfamiliar skyline.
The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the sleeping city. She could feel the weight of the journey ahead pressing down on her, but it wasn't an unwelcome feeling. It was a challenge, a purpose.
Nabu joined her by the window, his presence a comforting warmth at her side. "You ready for this?"
he asked softly, his voice barely louder than a whisper.
Layla turned to look at him, her eyes shining with determination. "Absolutely," she replied.
Nabu smiled, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder. "Then let's get some rest. We have a lot to do, and we'll need all our strength."
Layla nodded, her gaze shifting back to the moonlit cityscape. There were so many unknowns, so many obstacles ahead. But with Nabu by her side and Kaien's support, she felt a renewed sense of hope, a belief that, despite the challenges, they could succeed.
Together, they turned away from the window, ready to face whatever lay ahead. The real journey was just beginning.
OoO
Zero blinked rapidly, trying to process the torrent of information that had just been unloaded onto him.
His eyes were wide as he stared at Nabu and Layla, disbelief etched across his features. "That's... that's a lot to take in," he finally managed, rubbing his temples. "So not only do we have to deal with rogue vampires, but now we're contending with mythical creatures and relics from your world? How are we supposed to handle that discreetly?" He gaped, sinking into a chair that Digit and Chatta had thoughtfully moved behind him. "Thanks," he mumbled absent-mindedly to the pixies, still reeling from the revelation.
Suddenly, Nabu's eyes snapped open, and with a swift motion of his hand, a large, mirror-like image of a mountain materialised in the centre of the room. It shimmered with an ethereal glow, the details so vivid it was as if they could reach out and touch the rugged terrain.
Zero's curiosity was piqued, and he leaned forward, squinting at the projection. "Hang on, that looks familiar," he murmured, trying to place the location.
Kaien stepped closer, his eyes widening as recognition dawned on him. "That's Mount Osore," he said gravely. "A group of S-ranked hunters and nobles from the Vampire Association are headed there next Saturday. Twelve of my hunters have already gone missing in that area." His fists clenched at his sides, anger and worry flickering across his face.
Nabu frowned deeply. "It must be Lord Darkar at work," he speculated. "Let's hope your hunters are still alive. Lord Darkar has a habit of keeping his victims alive, albeit in a comatose state, since his creatures can't fully digest them."
Kaien's expression hardened. "We need to act swiftly," he declared. "Do you know what the artefacts look like? I can't quite recall all the details from our conversation yesterday."
Nabu sighed, his gaze turning steely as he began to explain. "We're searching for six artefacts, each linked to a specific elemental force from our realm. They hold immense power, and if Lord Darkar gets his hands on even one, it could tip the scales of magic and disrupt the balance between worlds."
Sure thing! Here's a revised set of names for the artifacts, aligning with their elemental themes:
He gestured, and a series of images materialised in the air, each pulsating with its own unique energy.
"The first is the Emberflare Core," he said, as an image of a fiery, radiant core appeared. "It embodies the essence of fire and the spirit of a dragon."
The image shifted to depict a serene, yet
unfathomably deep lake. "Then there's the Abyssal Pearl," Nabu continued. "It channels the power of water, connecting deeply to the element of fluid control and the sea's depths."
Next, a dense, ancient forest emerged, dominated by a towering cedar tree. "The Verdant Heartstone," he said. "It is connected to nature's energy, plants, soil, and life itself."
The display flickered, revealing a high mountain range buffeted by fierce winds. "The Moonwhisper Chalice is bound to the element of the moon, air, and the influence of the night," Nabu explained, casting a glance at Kaien. "It is said to lie in the mountains where your team is headed."
He continued, the images flowing seamlessly from one to the next. "Then there is the Resonance Crystal," depicting a shimmering crystal that seemed to hum with vibration. "This artefact is linked to the power of sound, able to amplify one's voice or harmonise with natural frequencies."
Finally, an image of dark, winding tunnels emerged, filled with metallic reflections.
"Lastly, the Technoflux Shard," Nabu finished. "It's linked to the power of technology, energy, and human innovation."
He turned his gaze back to Kaien and Zero. "Each of these artefacts is integral to the elemental powers of our realm. Individually, they're formidable; together, they're unstoppable. With Lord Darkar's forces scattered across this world, there's no telling what dangers we'll face. But whatever the threat, we must remain hidden and proceed discreetly."
Nabu's shoulders sagged slightly as he admitted, "We have no concrete leads on the locations of these artefacts. Our instructions were to use our magic and intellect to find them."
Layla leaned forward, her eyes alight with determination. "Do you think Nabu and I could accompany you on your mission?" she asked hopefully.
Kaien hesitated, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. "They wouldn't allow me to bring you along, despite my position," he admitted. "To everyone else, you're just human students. However..." A sly grin spread across his face. "The Kuran's are hosting a party this Saturday as a farewell to those going on the mission. We've received intelligence that a group of Level E vampires plans to attack during the event. If you were to demonstrate your abilities there, it might convince the Association to let you join the mission."
"That sounds promising," Layla agreed, a spark of excitement in her voice. Then her expression shifted to one of slight concern. "But we haven't crafted any weapons suitable for combating vampires yet."
Kaien folded his arms, nodding. "I anticipated that. Typically, forging weapons of that calibre takes about four weeks. Unless..." He trailed off, a hopeful glint in his eye. "Unless you can create them yourselves using your magic. Given your abilities, it's possible your magic could be effective against vampire threats."
Nabu and Layla exchanged a knowing look before Nabu nodded confidently. "We can handle that."
With a graceful sweep of his arms, Nabu began tracing intricate patterns in the air. His fingers moved with practised precision, and his eyes glowed a vibrant shade of purple. The air around him shimmered as energy coalesced, and a weapon began to take form.
A golden spear materialised, its shaft adorned with elaborate purple markings that pulsed like living veins. The spearhead was double-edged and razor-sharp, etched with ancient runes that glowed faintly, exuding a protective aura that seemed to hum with latent power.
Layla watched in awe, a smile tugging at her lips. "Impressive as always," she remarked. "Could you craft a pair of dual blades for me? Conjuring objects was never my strong suit."
"Of course," Nabu replied with a wink. Mimicking his previous motions, he focused his energy, and two slender blades materialised before them.
The blades gleamed with a golden hue, their edges honed to perfection. Delicate blue markings swirled along the length of the metal, resembling flowing water and forming symbols akin to droplets and ocean waves.
The handles were elegantly curved, wrapped in the same blue patterns, giving them a harmonious blend of beauty and lethality. Like the spear, these blades bore runes inscribed along their surfaces, promising protection, strength, and agility.
"The best part?" Nabu said, demonstrating as he gave the blades a quick twist. They retracted smoothly, folding into compact hilts that could be easily concealed. "They're retractable, so you can carry them discreetly. A simple twist, and they're ready for action."
Kaien and Zero watched with astonishment. Zero stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the weapons. "So, your magic allows you to create anything you envision?" he asked a hint of envy in his voice.
Nabu rested the spear against his shoulder. "With sufficient focus and energy, yes. It requires discipline and control. Crafting weapons imbued with enchantments capable of harming vampires is no simple feat."
Zero examined the glowing runes, hesitant but intrigued. "These symbols, they almost seem alive."
"That's the enchantment at work," Layla explained, activating one of her blades. She traced a finger over the intricate blue symbols. "Each marking is a layer of protection, a signature of sorts. They react to vampire energy, strengthening when needed."
Kaien let out a low whistle, clearly impressed. "Remarkable. If we could replicate this magic across all our weapons, it could turn the tide against any potential vampire uprising."
Nabu's expression darkened slightly. "With respect, sharing this power might not be advisable," he cautioned, casting a sidelong glance at Zero, who crossed his arms defensively.
Zero's eyes narrowed. "And why's that?" he challenged. "Afraid we'd misuse it?"
Nabu met his gaze evenly. "I'm concerned it might fall into the wrong hands. Power like this requires responsibility."
Zero scoffed. "Or perhaps you're worried we'd use it to give vampires what they deserve. They've caused enough suffering."
Layla stepped forward, her eyes filled with empathy. "Zero, I can see your hatred runs deep," she said softly. "But isn't it unfair to condemn an entire race for the actions of some? Vampires didn't choose their nature any more than you chose to be human. They didn't ask to be born with those instincts."
Zero clenched his jaw, a flash of pain crossing his features. "You don't know what they've taken from me," he muttered.
Nabu spoke gently but firmly. "We understand loss, Zero. But harbouring such hatred only harms yourself. In our world, humans are often viewed as inferior by some of our own kind. They see themselves as superior, untouched by mortality. Imagine if they judged you without knowing you, simply because of what you are."
Zero's posture stiffened as he grappled with their words. "It's not the same," he argued weakly.
"Isn't it?" Layla pressed. "Treat others the way you'd want to be treated. Not all vampires are evil, just as not all humans are good."
An uncomfortable silence settled over the room. Zero looked away, his expression conflicted. The weight of their words hung heavily in the air.
Kaien clapped his hands together, breaking the tension. "They make a valid point, Zero," he said encouragingly. "And speaking of which, I believe it's time to address that favour you two owe me." He gave Nabu and Layla a mischievous grin. "I'd like you both to help Zero see a different perspective on vampires. Perhaps, with a bit of your magic, used subtly, of course, you might succeed where others haven't."
Layla's face lit up. "We'd be happy to help!" she exclaimed.
Nabu nodded in agreement. "Consider it done."
Zero rolled his eyes, though a hint of a smirk played on his lips. "Good luck with that," he said dryly. "You're not going to change my mind so easily."
Layla tilted her head, her smile gentle. "One bad experience doesn't define an entire group, Zero. Give us a chance, and you might be surprised."
He shrugged noncommittally. "We'll see."
Kaien beamed. "Excellent! Now that that's settled, we can focus on preparing for Saturday's event."
Nabu's eyes gleamed with anticipation. "It's going to be an interesting night."
Zero sighed, but there was a subtle shift in his demeanour. "Just remember, keep your magic under wraps. We don't need any more surprises."
Layla laughed softly. "Where's the fun in that?"
Zero couldn't help but chuckle. "You're going to be the death of me."
"Not if we can help it," Nabu quipped.
OoO
"Nothing makes me more miserable than going to class," Ruka remarked, her golden hair catching the late afternoon light. Her grimace was met with a chorus of nods from her companions. The Night Class students were assembled just outside their dorms, waiting for their turn to enter the academy grounds.
"I just don't get how they can be so pathetic," Kain, her ex-boyfriend, added, shaking his head in disbelief. "Groveling at our feet every chance they get."
"They can't help themselves," Hanabusa Aido interjected with his usual flair. A self-satisfied smile spread across his lips as a faint sparkle seemed to radiate from him, his very presence glowing under an imaginary spotlight. "It's simple—because of me. Who could resist such beauty?" He gave a dazzling grin, his teeth glinting in the sunlight.
"Me," came the unified and almost bored response from several of the group.
Hanabusa turned, fixing the offenders with a theatrical glare, his hands clenched dramatically against his chest. "How dare you! My beauty is universal."
Rima sighed, clearly unbothered. "Keep telling yourself that."
"Seriously, though," Akatsuki Kain added, letting out a weary sigh, "I can hear those Day Class students from here. We're nowhere near, and they're already screaming their heads off."
"You're right," Ichijou, Hanabusa's auburn-haired best friend, agreed, raising a brow in curiosity. "They're louder than usual today."
As the group approached the gates of the school, they noticed what had caused the commotion.
A tall brunette male student with rich, dark skin and long, braided hair was dancing energetically with a speaker balanced on his shoulder, moving his hips effortlessly to a fast-paced beat. In front of him was Layla, her steps perfectly aligned with the rhythm. The two moved in flawless sync, executing spins, intricate footwork, and movements that made the Day Class students burst with cheers.
Layla's fluidity captivated the crowd. Unlike many of the students, she wasn't conventionally thin.
Her curvaceous figure moved with confidence and precision, every movement radiating strength. Her jacket had been abandoned, and her white shirt was tucked into her skirt, showing off her athletic frame.
Her skirt flared as she spun, and the crowd caught glimpses of her black bike shorts beneath. Her powerful legs flexed with every step, the mid-thigh black platform boots she wore adding to her striking presence, giving her an edge that seemed both bold and graceful. It was hard not to be mesmerised.
The crowd was completely enraptured, and even the stoic Night Class students couldn't help but stare. Layla's confidence and beauty had commanded the scene, and there was a collective sense of awe.
"It looks like Hanabusa's been replaced," Ruka said with a sly grin, nudging her ex-boyfriend. Her gaze moved to Nabu. "And I can't blame them. That guy she's with doesn't look half bad either."
The giggles and murmurs among the Day Class students confirmed her observation.
"I definitely don't mind being his fan," one of the girls sighed with a dreamy expression.
"Right? He's so beautiful and tall!" another giggled. "And have you seen his arms? He looks like a Guardian!"
"Sorry, Hanabusa, we're switching teams!" a blonde student called out, teasing him while her friends erupted in laughter.
Hanabusa's smile faltered slightly, his dramatic composure starting to crumble. He huffed, straightening himself up and striking a pose. "They must be under some enchantment," he muttered. "Who needs them anyway?"
Rima shot him a bemused glance. "You sound jealous."
As the Night Class members continued to approach, they noticed Nabu spinning to stand next to an amused Zero. His typically stoic face visibly softened as he chatted with the new commer. Zero Kiryuu, known for his perpetually serious demeanour, appeared… relaxed. A faint smile tugged at his lips as he exchanged words with Nabu.
"Is it just me, or does Zero look… happy?" Rima asked her boyfriend, Shiki, with genuine surprise.
Shiki glanced over, eyebrows arching. "He does," he murmured, his eyes narrowing in contemplation.
Yuki Cross watched from a distance, her frown deepening. There was something so foreign, so unnatural, about seeing Zero like that. Her heart twisted uncomfortably at the sight. 'He's only ever been like that around me,' she thought, an uneasy pang of jealousy forming. Seeing Zero comfortable with someone else, laughing with them, felt unsettling in a way she hadn't anticipated.
Hanabusa's usual vanity took over as he sniffed a red rose dramatically, attempting to draw back the crowd's attention. "Good evening, everyone!" he called, raising his voice theatrically.
Nabu, who was now standing beside Zero, chuckled at Hanabusa's display. "He's the pompous one, isn't he?" he said to Zero, his voice low but clearly amused.
Zero gave Nabu a knowing smirk. "You do realise he can hear you, right?"
Hanabusa's eyes narrowed, his irritation evident, but Layla stepped forward before he could retort. "Nabu, don't be rude." She shot him a disapproving look before bowing slightly to the blonde vampire. "My apologies. I'm Layla Khumalo."
Nabu followed her lead, his smile casual and charming. "Nabu Khumalo," he added, bowing politely. "Her elder brother."
The introductions made, Ruka quickly looked away, her face flushing as she found herself staring at Nabu's warm grin longer than she intended. She turned her head sharply, scolding herself inwardly. 'What's wrong with me?'
Noticing the uneasy tension among the Night Class, Nabu's expression softened. He lowered his voice, just enough for the vampires to hear. "You know, we're not here to fight you," he said. "We're not your enemies. We understand that you're... different, but that doesn't mean you're monsters."
Zero, his expression suddenly darkening, muttered, "Because they are monsters."
Nabu turned his head, his gaze meeting Zero's with a calm but intense look. "And humans aren't?" he asked, his voice cutting through the silence. "Humans butcher animals for food, slaughter each other for the sake of power, wear the skins of creatures they've killed. Are they not monsters too?" He paused, letting the weight of his words settle. "Everyone fights for survival. Humans, vampires, it doesn't matter. We all do what we must."
Zero's jaw clenched, his fists tightening. "That's different," he insisted, his voice cracking with frustration.
"How?" Nabu challenged, his voice steady, his gaze unwavering. "Vampires need blood to live, just as humans need food. Not every vampire is a killer, just as not every human is good. It's the same battle for survival, but just fought in different ways."
Zero looked away, struggling with Nabu's words. He could feel them chipping away at his long-held beliefs, the hatred he'd harboured for so long. He tried to cling to his anger, but a small part of him began to waver.
Layla stepped closer, placing her hand gently on Zero's bicep, her gaze warm and understanding. "Not every vampire is like Shizuka," she said softly. "Some of them want peace just as much as you do. It's not about changing your beliefs overnight, Zero. Just… maybe consider looking beyond the hate."
Zero swallowed, her words hitting him harder than he wanted to admit. He didn't know how to respond, his emotions in turmoil.
Before he could speak, Takuma's friendly voice cut through the silence. He approached with an easy smile. "It's nice to hear a human defending us for a change," he said, his eyes alight with curiosity. "You two are quite… unique. Did you grow up in Japan, or are you recent arrivals?"
Layla's face brightened, and she turned to Takuma with a smile. "We're new here. Just transferred actually from South Africa" she said.
"From South Africa?" Rima repeated, her usual disinterested tone tinged with curiosity. "That's quite far."
Nabu nodded. "Yeah, we're here to continue our training under Headmaster Kaien Cross."
A murmur rippled through the Night Class students, all eyes now on the newcomers.
Even Kaname Kuran, who had been watching silently, stepped forward slightly, his dark eyes filled with curiosity. "Kaien Cross doesn't take on students," he said, his voice calm but with an unmistakable edge of interest. "How did you convince him?"
Layla's smile widened, meeting Kaname's gaze without hesitation. "We didn't. He wanted us."
Ruka's eyes narrowed slightly, a newfound respect in her gaze. "That's quite impressive. The Headmaster is known for his strength. If he took you in, you must be powerful."
Nabu chuckled softly, rubbing the back of his neck. "We do our best, but we're here to learn as well."
Takuma tilted his head, his expression curious. "Not many hunters are open to our kind. What makes you different?"
Nabu's gaze shifted to Layla, then back to Takuma, his eyes softening. "We've seen too much darkness in the world already. Too much division. We all want the same thing in the end. We want to survive and live in peace. Our goal is to help bridge that gap, even if it's just a little bit."
Kaname studied the pair, his usually guarded expression softening slightly. He was no stranger to people making grand claims, but something in their tone, something in their eyes made him believe that they truly meant it. "An ambitious goal" he remarked. "But perhaps a worthy one."
Hanabusa let out a dramatic sigh, shaking his head. "Oh, sure. Let's just all live in peace and harmony. What a lovely fairy tale."
Layla looked at him, her gaze steady. "It may seem like a fairy tale, but we have to try," she said simply. "It's better than giving up and accepting hatred."
Kaname glanced at Yuki, noticing the hope in her eyes. She had always wanted peace between the two worlds, but seeing the possibility reflected in Layla and Nabu's conviction made it seem almost attainable.
He could see it, her longing, her desire for unity. And it tore at him. He was painfully aware of her bond with Zero, the connection she refused to sever.
Zero, though still conflicted, nodded slowly. "I'm not saying I believe you," he said, his voice measured. "But… I'll try to keep an open mind."
'What?!' The night class thought.
It took the new students not even a a minute to convince Zero to change his perspective on them. A feat Yuki even failed to do.
Yuki was star struck, eyes never leavings Zero's thoughtful ones.
'He's just met them…' Yuki thought in disbelief 'yet he's willing to change after she said some?!'
Nabu grinned, clapping Zero on the shoulder. "That's all we're asking for. One step at a time."
Layla nodded in agreement. "Sometimes, it's the smallest steps that lead to the biggest changes."
Rima, glancing at Shiki, couldn't help but smile faintly. "Maybe we all need your narrative" she said softly.
As the conversation wound down, a sense of mutual respect began to form, even if it was fragile.
Kaname's gaze lingered on the newcomers, a part of him genuinely intrigued by them.
Their arrival was unexpected, but perhaps, just perhaps, it was what they all needed.
"Welcome to Cross Academy," he finally said, his voice formal but genuine. "Perhaps your time here will be enlightening for all of us."
Layla and Nabu bowed, their eyes locking with Kaname's in silent acknowledgment.
"Alright, Day Class," Nabu called out with a smile, turning back to the gathered students, "we've got to go, but let's plan something fun for the weekend, alright?" His words were met with cheers, the students clearly enamoured with their new idols.
As they walked away, the Night Class was left in thoughtful silence. Even Hanabusa, who usually had something snarky to say, was quiet, his gaze lingering on Layla's retreating figure. Something about her, about them, was different.
Yuki's gaze stayed on Zero as he moved further from her, surrounded by students who seemed charmed by him, Layla, and Nabu. It was like she was seeing a different side of him, a side she had never been privy to. A pang of jealousy twisted within her, stronger than she cared to admit.
Kaname, standing behind her, watched her closely. He didn't need to see her face to understand what she was feeling. It was in her posture, in the way her eyes lingered on Zero. It made his chest tighten, jealousy simmering just beneath his composed exterior.
Zero, now walking alongside Nabu, turned back to the Night Class briefly. "You two are getting the Day Class to do all your work for you?" he said, a rare smile on his lips.
Nabu let out a dramatic sigh. "Of course! No one's paying us to do this!"
The Day Class students giggled, enchanted by the lighthearted exchange. Nabu turned, waving to the Night Class. "We'll see you all around. Try to enjoy your night."
The Night Class exchanged glances, a new curiosity in their eyes. Layla and Nabu were different from anyone they had encountered before, something about their presence was both disarming and magnetic.
As the crowd began to disperse, Kaname kept his gaze on Yuki. Her eyes were still locked on Zero, a longing she couldn't seem to hide. He clenched his jaw, his patience wearing thin. The path they were all on was far more complicated than any of them realised.
And yet, perhaps these newcomers were what they needed to shift the balance, a change that, while uncertain, could lead them somewhere entirely new.
