(Greetings folks! I hope you're having an okay day as of the time you are reading this story. And if not, I hope reading this story makes it just a bit more bearable.
I mentioned in my last one-shot that I was working on another multi-chapter fic concerning Soifon and this is it. Now, this will be sort of an experimental story in that I'm I'm going in mostly blind. Not that I'm not sure where the story is going or whether or not it has a definitive end or anything but unlike most of my other stories, there's not going to be much in the way of planning out the chapters, just deciding what happens in them and working from there.
I got this book a few months ago that claimed to offer advice on writing Sci-fi, Fantasy and Horror and the advice I got from it was...mixed.
Truth be told, it was a rather disappointing book. Hardly even talked about the genres it mentioned and one dumbass signed on to give advice didn't even know what the Uncanny Valley meant.
That being said, it did have some good advice in there and a piece of it was to go in blind with writing. Personally, I think planning it outs works the best for me but I want to give this style a try, just to see if I can hack it.
So, first we'll have this chapter to set things up and then each chapter will sort of be its own little thing, all focusing on the same thing, a touch-starved Soifon seeking physical contact. If you like this character, I'm sure you'll enjoy the story. If you don't, well, I'm sure there's a bashfic somewhere else so go look for that and leave us alone.
Anyway, I've prattled way too long so let's just start the damn thing already.)
Chapter 1: Yoruichi
It all began with a simple pat on the head.
It had been a few days after Sosuke Aizen's betrayal and immediate defection from the Gotei 13 along with Gin Ichimaru and Kaname Tosen. To say that the Soul Society was in a state of utter confusion and loss would be a grave understatement. Every Captain had to explain the situation to their Squads with some making it clear to not treat the 3rd, 5th, or 9th Divisions any differently because of their treacherous former Captains and others demanding that a close eye be kept on them.
Soifon was one of those captains.
The Head of the Punishment Squad was known for her ruthlessness and general distrust of people. It served her well in her line of work as a assassin and brutal enforcer of the law of Soul Society. Camaraderie was a luxury not known within the Stealth Force and she liked it that way. Even among the captains, she only ever communicated when needing to and with not a word wasted. With how she carried herself, it would prove difficult for the common person to imagine that there was once a time when she was but a young girl who melted at a head pat.
Unless, of course, they happened to be Yoruichi Shihoin.
"So this is your new office, huh?" The former head of the Shihoin clan asked as she scanned the room. "It's very...light."
"I feel there's no need but for only the most essential of items, Lady Yoruichi." Soifon answered as if she were giving a report. It had been a few days since mentor and student met on the battle field and a century's worth of resentment and perceived betrayal came pouring out of Soifon. The current captain of Squad 2 considered herself lucky that Yoruichi had knocked her men out before her big break down. Even now, she fought the urge to clinch her teeth in shame for that display. There was still a part of her that hated Yoruichi, although now it was mostly for the unwelcome humbling she brought upon her.
The rest of her, however, was quite happy to have her former mentor back in her life, for however fleeting the time was.
"Geez, Soifon." Yoruichi shook her head. "I know you've always been a stickler for work but you should have at least something fun in your office. At least a stash of dirty magazines or something."
"You know I don't care for things like that, Lady Yoruichi!" Soifon snapped. She almost mentioned the black cat statue she was saving up for but decided against it.
Yoruichi giggled. "Calm down, Soifon. You know I was only teasing!"
Soifon stiffened and with a blush, sighed. "Y-You're right, Lady Yoruichi. I...I guess its been so long, I've gotten unused to your humor."
"Yeah..." Yoruichi sighed as well. "It really has been too long." She frowned. "Look Soifon, I know a million apologies can't make up for what I put your through but, once again, I do want to apologize for leaving you in the dark like I did."
Soifon's smile faltered as well. "It...It's fine..." She shook her head. "Honestly, if you owe anyone an apology, it's your family. You let them believe you were a traitor after all."
"Well, things are still a little hectic around here. They're still gathering new members for Central 46 and everything." Yoruichi mentioned. "I'm sure once that's all cleared up, my family will arrange something in the way of communicating, if only for an apology."
"And I take it, you'll be staying with that awful Kisuke Urahara while you wait for that day?" Soifon asked.
"Aye, even after all this time, you still can't give the guy a break?"
"He's the reason you left in the first place!" Soifon snapped. "He was wise to stay in the World of the Living or I'd-
Yoruichi suddenly flash-stepped toward Soifon, grabbing her by her shoulders. Caught off-guard, the Captain of Squad 2 stiffened her former mentor's grasp.
"Soifon, what happened back then should stay in the past. I'm not asking that you forgive Kisuke because Soul King knows I feel like knocking him out every now and then myself. But please don't hold what happened over his head, especially when we both know it was Aizen's fault."
Aizen. Even the mere mention of that name boiled Soifon's blood. To think such a treacherous snake had been hiding himself amongst them all this time, only striking at the perfect moment to complete his evil goals and escape with his comrades. No one had out right stated it but the pride of the Gotei 13 had taken a heavy blow from this series of events and even though she had been deceived like everyone else, Soifon still kicked herself for not seeing it sooner.
"Right now, the important thing is that everything's all cleared up now." Yoruichi smiled and placed her hand gently on Soifon's head. "So let's pick up the pieces and give Aizen some payback!" She finished that sentence with a cat-like grin, the kind Soifon used to see her bear all the time back in her youth.
But Soifon didn't see it this time. She had stopped hearing anything Yoruichi said after she placed her hand on her head. From the second her palm made contact with Soifon's scalp, the 2nd Division Captain was sent on a deep nostalgia trip. She recalled the countless times Yoruichi had patted her head, usually after a successful mission or report. It had been ages since Soifon had felt the sensation of a light pat against her head and as she came to realize in that moment, she had all but pushed aside all memory of that sensation when she marked Yoruichi as a traitor in her own heart.
"Uh...Soifon?"
"Huh...wuh?"
"...You okay? You spaced out a little back there."
"I...did..." Soifon's senses returned little by little and she remembered she was in the middle of a conversation with Yoruichi. "O-Oh! Right! My apologizes, Lady Yoruichi, I simply have a lot on my mind, as we all do." It was the best response she could give, especially considering that it wasn't even a lie.
"You could say that again," Yoruichi patted Soifon a few more times. "Well, I gotta get going now. I'll try to arrange a visit as soon as I can, okay?"
"O...kay...that...That would be nice. Thank you, Lady Yoruichi."
Yoruichi scoffed. "And you know, since I'm not Head of the Shihoin Clan anymore, I'd like it if you just called me Yoruichi, alright?"
"I'll try to remember that, Lad- I mean...Miss...I...Y-Yoruichi."
Yoruichi snickered. "We'll work on it. See ya." With a wave, Yoruichi flash-stepped out of Soifon's office, leaving the 2nd Division Captain alone with only the lingering sensation of her head pat.
"S...See you...Lady Yoruichi."
Night had fallen and Soifon laid in her futon for the night. The single window to her room was open to let in the air which blew through various posters and scrolls hanging from the wall, creating a constant rustling sound. This sound usually helped Soifon to focus on falling asleep exactly when she wanted to so she could get straight to work come morning but on this night, she hardly even heard the rustling or the howl of the wind outside that created it.
She was still stuck in that moment several hours ago when Yoruichi patted her on the head.
Even now, her own hand was running its fingers through her hair in that same spot, almost as if trying to recreate the sensation over and over again.
But it didn't feel the same. Something fundamental was missing and deep inside, Soifon already knew what it was.
Yoruichi
Soifon sighed as she slid her hand back beneath her blanket. "This is stupid," She whispered to herself. "Yoruichi comes back after 100 years and gives me a stupid head pat and I start obsessing all over again. Soifon tensed up. "No! It won't be like that. It may have been Aizen's machinations that caused everything but Yoruichi still left me without so much as a good-bye! She can't just waltz into my life again and expect everything to be okay!" Soifon turned in her bed. "She'll have to earn my trust all over again."
Soifon curled up within the blanket. "And it'll take more than a stupid head pat to do that."
After a few minutes, Soifon unconsciously started rubbing her head again.
(Huh...I expected this chapter to last a little longer. But to be fair, I made a last-minute decision before starting on this story, that being that I was going to treat this first chapter like something of a prologue. I promise you the next chapter will be a little longer and I think you'll have a better idea of where this story's going as well. Until then, so long and I hoped you had a nice Thanksgiving.)
