Batman Gets the Win
Author's Note: Hello, everyone, and welcome back to Episode 12 of my Batman '66 continuation! Without further ado, let's begin the story!
When we last saw Batman and the Daring Duo, the chaotic Kite Man and Golden Glider had tied them to kite frames destined to be struck by lightning! Will this be a shocking end for Batman, Robin, and the Mystique Maiden? Will this mark the end of Bonnie's blossoming crime-fighting career? Don't move, Bat-fans! Stay tuned for the next shocking development!
Struggling against their ropes as the timer counted down, Batman, Robin, and the Mystique Maiden had brief conversations as they desperately thought of a way to escape.
"Is this it, Batman?" Robin asked his mentor.
"If it is, Robin," Batman said, struggling against the ropes, "let's go out bravely, like any other decent citizen of Gotham would."
"At least we'd make for a shocking article in the Gotham City Times," the Mystique Maiden remarked.
As Batman fought against his ropes, the timer counted down to two minutes.
"The kite frames have some rust on them," Batman pointed out, "and as such, are very sharp. If we could just cut the ropes using the frames as leverage…"
Batman grunted as he sawed his ropes on the rusted sections of his kite frame, and Robin and the Mystique Maiden followed his lead. The timer, meanwhile, now read 1:30. With Batman freed from his ropes, he held on tightly to the frame so that he wouldn't crash down to the rooftop. Robin and the Mystique Maiden, one after the other, freed themselves from their bonds as the timer read 1:00.
"How are we going to get down, Batman?" Robin asked.
"Simple," Bonnie grinned. "Slide away!"
"Huh?" Robin questioned, and Bonnie let go of her frame and to the pipe holding the frame up in the air. She giggled as she let the pipe carry her all the way back down to the rooftop of the Gotham Kite Factory.
"We've got nothing to lose but our lives, Robin!" Batman remarked as the timer now read 0:30. Following Bonnie, he also let go and slid down back to the rooftop. With one final glance at his kite frame, Robin let go and slid down, the wind blowing in his hair. When he got together with Batman and the Mystique Maiden, the shock device activated, shocking the kite frames and sending a shiver down their spines.
"Holy thunderbolts," Robin muttered.
Now regrouped back at the Batmobile, Batman's utility belt began to beep. The Caped Crusader hurriedly opened up the trunk to access the portable Bat-Phone.
"Yes, Commissioner," Batman spoke into the phone.
"Batman!" Commissioner Gordon said eagerly into the Red Phone. "We've just received a tip about Kite Man's next crime! Do you think you can come to Headquarters?"
"We'll be right there, Commissioner," Batman answered. Batman, Robin, and the Mystique Maiden quickly entered the Batmobile and zoomed towards Gotham Police Headquarters.
At Gotham City Police Headquarters, Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara were briefing the trio on some new intel.
"We received a boasting phone call from the Golden Glider," Commissioner Gordon explained. "She said…'Just try to stop my Kitey's Plan Fly High! Keep Chief O'Hara on the lookout…not that it'll help you!'"
"That was it?" Robin asked.
"Yes, Robin," Commissioner Gordon replied. "Can you believe it? Having the gall to be so boastful."
"How is that going to help us, Batman?" the Mystique Maiden asked.
"When you're with us just a bit longer, Miss Linseed," Batman told her, "you'll see that every criminal boast is secretly an opening in disguise…"
He turned to Chief O'Hara. "Chief O'Hara, are there any major shipments that you're needed for today?"
"None that I can think of, Batman," Chief O'Hara admitted. "...Except for a shipment of a million dollars that's being delivered to Gotham National Bank."
A moment of realization came upon his face.
"…Begorrah!" he exclaimed. "You think that he's got his windy sights set on it?"
"I don't like to state assumptions as fact, Chief O'Hara," Batman said, "but it is quite possible. Robin, the Mystique Maiden, and I will head over to the Gotham National Bank after a trip to the Batcave."
Batman, Robin, and the Mystique Maiden quickly ran out of Gotham City Police Headquarters and towards the Batmobile. When they sat down in their respective seats, Batman took a can of Bat-Sleep from his utility belt.
"Ready for the Bat-Sleep, Miss Linseed?" Batman asked. "We can't have you knowing the location of the Batcave, after all."
"Ready when you are, Batman," the Mystique Maiden said courageously. With a subtle nod, Batman sprayed her, and she began to yawn.
"Nighty-night," the Mystique Maiden giggled as she began to doze off and fall into Robin's lap.
"Holy snoozefest," Robin muttered, looking down at the Mystique Maiden as the Batmobile once again blared up, headed away from Gotham City Police Headquarters and to the Batcave.
"Even crime-fighters deserve a good-night's sleep, Robin," Batman remarked, keeping his eyes on the road. "Especially those as novice as Miss Linseed."
"Gosh, yes," Robin admitted. "Is it strange that I think she looks pretty while she's sleeping?"
At this, the Mystique Maiden smiled in her sleep, and Batman chuckled.
"A young crime-fighter's maturity must grow eventually, Robin," he said as the "GOTHAM CITY- 14 MILES" sign came into view. The barricade folded back automatically, and the Batmobile made a swerving turn into the Batcave.
After the Batmobile came to a stop, Batman sprayed the Mystique Maiden with a canister of Bat-Wake. Her eyes blinked open on Robin's lap, then she sat up and stretched her arms.
"Dick, we do not need to ride the mechanical pony outside of Foley's Gifts," she murmured in a daze before looking around her environment. After a minute of feeling tosticated, the memory of the Bat-Sleep slowly came back to her. Now fully awake, everyone exited the Batmobile. Batman led everyone to the Batcomputer, where he inputted the details of their case by pressing various buttons.
"That Batcomputer sure is handy, Batman," the Mystique Maiden remarked.
"It's quite the machine, Miss Linseed," Batman admitted. "It's helped us crack many cases, from the Riddler to the Joker to the Penguin, King Tut, and Two-Face. But no machine can replace the methods of the human mind."
The Batcomputer dinged, and a piece of paper was ejected from its "OUTPUT" section. Batman picked up the piece of paper and read it.
"According to the Batcomputer," Batman said, looking down at the paper, "Chief O'Hara's cash shipment will arrive at approximately three o'clock in the afternoon."
"Holy sands of time!" Robin exclaimed, punching his fist. "That's only half an hour from now!"
"Then we must move with haste," Batman acknowledged, turning around and running towards the Batmobile. "To the Batmobile!"
Once everyone was settled in their proper seats, the Mystique Maiden was sprayed with another whiff of Bat-Sleep, and the Batmobile roared on towards Gotham National Bank.
Near Gotham National Bank, two police officers were driving an armored truck. After coming near the bank, they stopped the truck and exited it.
"Hey, Jimmy," one cop said to the other, pointing up in the sky at two box-shaped kites. "Look at those kites up there."
"I wouldn't be flying a kite if I were them," the other cop replied. "Kite Man is on the loose."
As the police officers gazed up at the kites, the toys suddenly began to spew a thick gas. The gas cloud drifted near the officers and sent them into huge coughing fits.
"I…can't see," Jimmy coughed. "How 'bout you, Burt?"
"Blind…as a bat…" Burt coughed as Kite Man came flying in on his hang-glider.
"Kite Man has done it again!" he grinned while flying closer to the ground. "My Gas Kites did quite the job! Oh, yeah!"
While the officers were busy coughing, Windsock, Flighty, and Avi ran up to the truck. The Golden Glider wasn't far behind, humming like a bird with a grin on her face.
"Great work, boys!" Kite Man called down to his gang. "Grab those greenbacks, and let's get out of here! That bird and bat aren't far behind!"
As Kite Man's gang was stealing money bags from the armored car, the Golden Glider was using her skates to make mini glacier boxes for carrying them. The Batmobile pulled up, causing alarm within the henchmen. They quickly dropped the bags and prepared for a fight as the Mystique Maiden was awakened with a whiff of Bat-Wake and the trio exited the Batmobile.
"Clip 'em!" Kite Man said as he landed next to the Golden Glider and gripped her arm. "The winds are still in our favor!"
"With pleasure, sir," Avi remarked as he braced himself for a Bat-Fight.
Windsock took a money bag and threw it at Batman, but the Bright Knight quickly jumped out of the way and punched him in the chin.
SOCK!
"I think it's time to keep this fight grounded," the Mystique Maiden quipped, trying to punch Avi in the chest as hard as she could.
BOFF!
Avi flinched backwards, stumbling into the money bag that Windsock had thrown at Batman.
"Keep your fists tight, Miss Linseed!" Batman advised her as he finished Avi off with a
ZAM!
Kite Man and the Golden Glider looked on with concerned faces at the ongoing Bat-Fight. Windsock grabbed Robin and pushed him inside the armored truck. He attempted to close the door on him, but that was when Robin kicked him to the ground.
SPLATT!
Flighty attempted to go after the Mystique Maiden, but she took a nearby traffic cone and thrust it at him by its point. Then, she finished him off with a grazing kick from her go-go boots.
KAPOW!
As Batman punched Windsock, finishing him off with a
KLONK!,
Kite Man and the Golden Glider stared at each other with concern.
"We need to get out of here, Kitey," the Golden Glider whispered.
'"Rats," Kite Man whispered back. "It's a good thing that I hid my Jumbo Jet Kite right around the corner. Let's go, Goldy!"
Kite Man and the Golden Glider ran around a corner, hand in hand.
"Batman!" Robin pointed out. "Kite Man and the Golden Glider are getting away!"
"Not for long, they aren't," Batman remarked. He, along with Robin and the Mystique Maiden, ran off following Kite Man and his moll, but they quickly stopped in their tracks as the two of them flew in the air on a comically large kite with a rocket booster strapped to it. Kite Man and the Golden Glider were gripping onto its string, and Kite Man was holding its remote control in his other hand.
"Holy turbulence!" Robin exclaimed.
"Looks like we've won, Batman!" Kite Man called down triumphantly. "Oh, yeah!"
"Don't count your kites before they're tangled, Kite Man," Batman quipped, taking a Batarang from his utility belt and tossing it up at the Jumbo Jet Kite. The Batarang got caught in the jet's machinery, causing it to sputter, and it came falling down, with Kite Man and the Golden Glider still gripping tightly onto its string. The Jumbo Jet Kite continued to descend, before it finally landed in a nearby tree, causing Kite Man and his moll to get tangled with it.
"Good grief," Kite Man muttered within the mess of the kite.
With Kite Man and the Golden Glider back at Gotham State Penitentiary, the trio decided to relax at Saturday's Sundae Café. The waitress had brought them three sundaes topped with blueberries and vanilla ice cream.
"These Dynamic Duo Delight Sundaes sure are great, aren't they, Batman?" Robin remarked.
"I don't typically endorse self-promotion, Robin," Batman replied, impressed, "but their dining fare is far from subpar, so I will allow it."
"Let's just hope they don't get too ambitious," the Mystique Maiden chuckled, "or our stomachs might just end up flying high!"
Author's Note: What did you think of this storyline, everyone? I had lots of fun writing it! The next villain is one I had a ton of fun working with, so I hope that you're looking forward to the next two-parter! As Desmond Doomsday would say,
Until next week...
