Part 1: The Gift of a Heart
Josie Saltzman had always had a complex life. Being the daughter of two powerful sorcerers, burdened by the fact that she was a twin, and the constant shadow of her mother, Alaric Saltzman, had been something she'd never been able to escape. Although she loved her sister Lizzie deeply, she'd always felt there was more to her than just her twin role.
Since moving to Mystic Falls and beginning to grapple with the wonders and dangers of the supernatural world, Josie had grown by leaps and bounds. But what she never imagined was that her life would take an unexpected turn when, after an unexpected reunion, she met Émile Mikaelson, Hope Mikaelson's younger brother, who had recently returned to town.
Émile wasn't like other boys. Although his family was steeped in history and power, there was something about him that stood out. Klaus Mikaelson, his father, had been known for his strength and cruelty, but Émile didn't seem to have inherited only those qualities. While he was serious enough not to easily fall for the charm of Mystic Falls, there was also a calmness in his gaze, something that resembled the tranquility of the vast Canadian prairies. Émile had been named after Klaus, but it was also a popular name in Quebec, reflecting a part of the Canadian heritage that his maternal family had begun to embrace after their time there.
He was a 17-year-old boy, with a softer energy than Hope, but with a determination that somehow seemed straight out of the Mikaelsons. He had dark hair like his father and the intense eyes of the Mikaelson family, but his nature seemed to have something more, something that made him stand out among the vast family history.
When Josie first met him, she found him intriguing. Unlike his sister, who was strong and brave, Émile was more introspective, and, although he never said so, Josie was surprised by how different he was. He didn't seem overwhelmed by his heritage, but at the same time, he couldn't shake it.
One afternoon, after a school meeting, she ran into Émile in front of the university gates. He stood there, staring at the horizon as if searching for answers in the fresh air that blew by. She immediately realized he was alone, and for some reason, that made her approach him.
"Is everything okay?" Josie asked, watching the sunlight softly illuminate her face.
Émile turned to her with a faint smile, which failed to hide his agitation. "Yes, just... I was thinking about everything we've lost and gained," he said, his tone as if words were difficult for him.
Josie didn't know why, but she felt she had to share something with him. "You know, sometimes I feel caught between what I hope my future will be and what it actually is," she confessed. "Sometimes I feel like I'm always in my sister's shadow, even when I don't want to be."
Émile looked at her with silent understanding. "That sounds... complicated. But I, for one, understand. I have a sister like Hope, who has such a great destiny, and I... I'm here, with all the weight of what my family has been. But also, sometimes, I feel like I'm searching for something I can't find."
Josie was silent for a moment, surprised by Émile's sincerity. The way he spoke showed her a vulnerability she hadn't seen in him before, and for some reason, it made her feel even more connected to him.
"You're not alone in that," Josie said, looking ahead and noticing the sky beginning to darken. "We're all searching for something. I think that makes us human, even if we're part of something much bigger."
Émile nodded slowly, and something in his eyes softened. "I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks that."
And so, they began to share their thoughts, a silent connection forming between them. Josie couldn't explain it, but she felt she could be herself with him without hiding anything.
