Chapter 3
On Earth, in Kaua'i, Hawaii, a Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelekai is headed to school with other classmates on a school bus. After spending the day at school, Lilo arrives home and starts on her homework. Lilo is a young girl living on her own. Her parents mysteriously disappeared one night after tucking her into bed and Lilo has not seen them since. Because of her parent's mysterious disappearance, Lilo, assuming her parents are gone, has declared herself a self-proclaimed orphan.
Meanwhile, in space, Stitch's spaceship's computer notifies him he is approaching planet Earth. He enters the atmosphere of the Earth near Kaua'i, Hawaii and navigates through the landscape of the island before landing his spaceship on the island just a few miles near Lilo's house. It then begins to rain and an oncoming truck approaches and accidentally hits Stitch. Stitch survives, but is knocked unconscious. After the trucker identifies the being he struck, he calls animal control who take Stitch to a dog pound.
The next day, Stitch awakes to find himself at the dog pound. At the animal shelter, Lilo is looking for a pet. Stitch goes up to Lilo as she is looking for a pet and she turns around to face him. Surprised but intrigued by each other's appearance, Stitch reveals his speaking capability to Lilo, and Lilo decides to adopt him. At Lilo's home, Stitch reveals his status to Lilo as an extraterrestrial being who's planet has been conquered by an intergalactic conqueror. As Lilo is informed about this, she tells Stitch that she will try to help him reclaim his home planet.
Later, that night, as Lilo is getting ready to go to bed, Stitch notices a picture of Lilo sitting on a tree with a Hawaiian man and Hawaiian woman. "Who are this man and woman?" Stitch asks. "Those are my parents," says Lilo. "Where are they?" Stitch asks. Lilo pauses and then says "I don't know. I think I'm an orphan". Lilo climbs into her bed and begins telling the story about her parents mysterious disappearance.
Lilo says "One night, my parents tucked me into bed and went to go somewhere that night, but during their drive, they mysteriously disappeared and I have not seen them since. I keep this picture of me and them to comfort me." Stitch takes another look at the picture before going to his wooden bed LIlo prepared for him and he and Lilo sleep through the night.
