Chapter One:

The Past Alphas

It was morning when Screech and Thud left the Mysterious Island to find Chomper. With Ruby expecting another little one on the way, a hybrid Fastrunner/Sharptooth created by the Sky-beings, the pair didn't want to waste a single moment in uniting the divided family. Leaving the beach behind them, they entered the Mysterious Beyond, sniffing, trying to locate Chomper's scent. When they came upon other sharpteeth, they asked if any had seen the Alpha, to which most shook their heads. As the bright circle set, the pair found a nice spot to sleep.

"Where could he be, Thud?"

"I don't know, Screech, but we need to find him."

As they lay down, both recalled the past Alpha, seeing the rise and fall of each dynasty. In their late teens, they lived in fear under the rule of Sharptooth, who killed mercilessly, some nicknamed him Death. Course, Sharptooth had a talent unlike any other and could see into the future, and to a lucky few, he'd share his knowledge of events to come, whether it was a drought, illness, helping others to make up for his cruel deeds. He was an odd leader to say the least.

Then there was Red Claw, an ambitious male who wanted to be the next Alpha, teaming up with the adult Screech and Thud to make a great team that could rule with an iron fist. At first, the pair enjoyed the luxuries of being friends with the next Alpha, drinking the best water, sleeping in the best nesting spots, enjoying the best game they could catch. Though there was a catch to the life of leisure, for Red Claw was obsessed with finding, and killing a sharptooth boy who spoke leafeater. They tried to invade a fortress known as the Great Valley, where the sharptooth boy, Chomper, took sanctuary.

After many season cycles, Chomper grew and had to leave the Great Valley, Red Claw tracking him vigorously. It was during a hunt, Red Claw told Screech and Thud that Chomper would be the one to kill him, all the while knowing another Alpha waited in the wings. Stephany was handpicked by Red Claw, knowing he needed to select a strong, vicious sharptooth to step in to rule.

After Red Claw was defeated, the prophecy coming true, Chomper unknowingly became the next Alpha. Out of all three, Screech and Thud had to admit, Chomper was the strangest they served under. Chomper was half sky-being, half sharptooth, explaining why he was so different from any of their kind. While Chomper was odd, they found they enjoyed the pack-like family they had with him. Thus, they'd fight to keep their family together.

"Rise and shine, babe." Thud stretched and nudged Screech, who curled tighter into a ball.

"Can't we just rest a tad longer; my legs were really sore yesterday."

"Come on, on your feet."

Screech wrapped his arms around Thud, spinning and holding him down. "Or we could lay here a while longer?"

"Nope." Thud pushed Screech off, rising to his feet.

"Why are you so hard to get?" Screech rose and stretched.

"It's why you liked me; I gave you a challenge."

Sharing a quick nuzzle, they went on. Coming upon an injured sharptooth, they waited a moment, sniffing to find out if the individual was truly alone. Once they saw the coast was clear, they walked out, albeit cautiously.

"Excuse me, sir, you look pretty beat up." Screech commented, seeing great gashes along his body. "Need some help?"

"No, leave me to die in peace." The male slumped to the earth, blood pooling around his body.

"Whose done this to you?" Thud approached the male, noticing he'd been in a fight and from what he could see, the male lost.

"Tyrannosaurus Rex..." The male said as he let out one last breath.

"Tyrannosaurus Rex?" Screech crinkled his muzzle. "Who the cuss is that?"

"Never heard of him. Though he might be a wonderer, might be seeking the Alpha spot if Chomper's whereabout are unknown. Maybe word has gotten around and there are others who feel they are more worthy to rule in his absence."

"An outsider seeking the title, could spell trouble. Should we tell Mrs. Boss?"

"No, we need to find this Tyrannosaurus Rex to see what we're up against. If he's hurting sharpteeth, he might be trying to draw the boss out of hiding to challenge him. Let's face it, when it comes to morality, the Boss will fall for it every time." Thud thought back to the younger Chomper, recalling such an event he saw firsthand. "After all, he removed the rocks so I wouldn't starve to death on that ledge."

"Yeah, he was always tender hearted. While nice, it's doing him no good out here in the real world."

The pair lay a flower over the body of the unknown male, not knowing if he was alone or if he had a pack, a family he left behind, thus they offered their condolences. It seemed within the following days to come, they found other sharpteeth with similar injuries, all saying a male by the name of Tyrannosaurus Rex was the cause of their misery, all perishing before saying where this Tyrannosaurus Rex went. Leaving a fined back sharptooth, they grew curious and worried about Tyrannosaurus Rex and what he was planning.

"Hey, Thud, did you notice this Tyrannosaurus Rex doesn't leave a trail?" Screech sniffed over the body of the biggest sharptooth of their kind known as Giants. (Giganotosaurus) "It's odd, I can't get a good scent."

"Odd, maybe he bathes daily to wash his scent off. It's not stick weed or smelly flowers like Mrs. Boss uses. Still, it's weird."

It seemed Tyrannosaurus Rex was one step ahead of the pair, for they could never catch up to him, not knowing what direction the male was headed. After days, they felt they were going in circles, finding only distorted bodies left behind. Which was different from the injured, and dying they stumbled upon earlier, meaning the attacks were becoming more gruesome as Tyrannosaurus Rex was becoming more of a killer then a fighter.

"I'm not one to admit fear, but this is a little concerning? What sort of fella goes around killing and disembodying his opponents? Is he trying to prove his worth, strength in combat?"

"Either way, we need to find him before he finds us."

"Yeah, dying was not on the agenda."

Marching on, they decided to travel through the night, letting the night circle light the way. It was in full, allowing them to see easily in the dark. They paused when they heard a fellow fast-bitter screeching in the distance, the pair moving fast. Upon a ridge they stood, seeing a bazar sight, bellow, a male sharptooth was being swarmed by a pack of fast bitters. Before the pair could intervene, they waited, seeing the male bit and fling a pair off his back. Next, he swept his arm, throwing several through the air, whipping his tale to crush one. It was amazing, the male was unfazed as the pack bit, clawed, and tried to bring him down. He was, dare they admit it, invincible to the pain.

"What should we do?" Screech asked.

"I-I don't know." Thud admitted, unsure how to handle the situation.

It was true, neither moved, only watching. The pack fell back, retreating when it was clear the male couldn't be killed. The male let out an unusual roar, that was unnatural and otherworldly, to the point where the pair had to cover their ears. They watched what the sharptooth would do, seeing he rushed by them to pursue the pack. No sooner had they left, Screech and Thud went after them, hoping the male was Tyrannosaurus Rex. Though, after some time, they lost sight of the male sharptooth, catching up to the pack to question them. By the time the bright circle rose, the pack were by a stream, washing the blood from their wounds. It was there, Screech and Thud stood on the far side.

"Hello there."

"You two, aren't you the Alpha's underlings?"

"Yes, and we were curious if you've seen him?" Thud asked their leader.

"No one has seen him in some time. If anything, there's talk, the Alpha couldn't handle being mocked by his own kind and offed himself."

"Are you sure no one has seen him?"

"Look all we know is, he's gone. And now, there's this crazy guy named Tyrannosaurus Rex who wants to take over."

"Who is this Tyrannosaurus Rex? Where did he come from?" Screech wondered.

"No one knows. Some say he's a wonderer from beyond the Mysterious Beyond. There's talk about a colony forming out int the waste lands."

"You mean from where Stephany was banished to?" Screech asked.

"Apparently, there is a nice area for predators, though, I've only ever heard about it, never been there myself. There's more to eat around here, fatter leafeaters."

"Well, perhaps-" Thud paused when he heard a twig snap.

All froze in place, looking around, hearing the water trickle softly in the background. "What was that?" Someone asked, sniffing the air for an intruder, yet there was none. Thud searched the tree line carefully, thinking someone was hiding, was out there despite that his noses told him. Then, he caught it, the slightest of movement, gasping aloud. For if he didn't know better, he could've sworn the leaves were moving.

"It can camouflage!" One of the pack members shouted.

The skin of the sharptooth was green, allowing him to blend in with his surroundings. Screech and Thud moved back, seeing the male burst out to bite the leader in his jaw, picking another up and tossing him aside. He stomped on those where were unfortunate enough to be under foot, swinging his tail to kill those around him. It was a massacre, that left Screech and Thud speechless with shock, unsure what provoked the male to do such a thing. And worst off, where they next to be slain?

"Thud, we need to go!"

Thud watched with wide eyes, looking the male over. "Wait Screech, we need to stay."

"Are you crazy, we'll be slaughtered with the rest!" Yanking at Thud, Screech shook where he stood.

"No, when it comes to the little bitter, expect the unexpected." Thud uttered softly. "I know who this is."

"What, who?"

"This is the boss."

"It can't! He looks nothing like him. Not to mention, he's killing, something the Boss would never do."

"When it comes to the boss, nothing is surprising."

It was a small detail, but the male before them had a limp, the same Chomper had. Screech had no choice but to remain with Thud, the pair waiting anxiously. The male who stood before them was none other than Chomper, his skin turning blue once more. Blood stained his muzzle, being a deformed looking version of a sharptooth. His arms were longer, his body leaner, more agile. He was without a doubt a strong and worthy predator, everything Chomper wasn't, the question was, how did Chomper come to be this evolved self?
