Chapter Seventeen:

Right or Wrong?

The day after the loss of Screech, Ruby and Chomper had the daunting task of helping their children come to grips with loss. Thinking it was a good time to try and get closer to Claw, father and son took a walk.

"You okay, Claw?"

"I'm fine." Claw snapped.

"You sure? I know Fang said-"

"Who cares what she thinks."

Chomper sighed and noticed Claw never once looked at him, keeping his gaze low. "Claw, what is it that I've done to cause you to withdraw?"

"You're not him."

"I am-"

"No, you're not, you'll never be him. So, just go back to Fang, she's you're favorite."

"I could never pick a favorite-"

"That's a lie, you like her because she's your successor, and she does everything you ask of her. I want to fight. I don't want to go through life being scared. I never want to feel fear like I did yesterday. My other dad was trying to prepare me for danger, where all you do is talk about your feelings."

"I want you, and your siblings to understand the circle of life, to apricate the largest and smallest of creatures. Kindness is not weakness."

"Coming from the wimpiest sharptooth, you would think that." Marching ahead. "Just leave me alone!"

"Claw!"

Chomper watched Claw fade into the jungle, lowering his head. He wanted to go after him, yet perhaps giving the boy some space would be the better option. Returning to the home, he saw Ruby with the girls. The two left Ruby to go collect seashells, distracting themselves from the tragedy. Ambling over, Ruby smiled when she saw him.

"How did it go?"

"I don't know what I did so wrong, Claw can't stand me."

"Well, you are different from Ty-Rex."

"Yeah, I can't seem to win with him. Not that I was close to my dad, but I always figure it'd be different if I had a boy. That we'd be close, would not be like my father or I."

"Maybe you need to stop trying too hard, not put so much effort into winning him over."

"Fang and Star are easier than him."

"It's been hard, you being gone, coming back, losing Screech."

"They won't stop coming..."

"What?"

"That's what he said. That they won't stop coming. I could easily take them on, kill them with my new powers. But then, what sort of example would I be setting for Fang. I'm trying to teach her that an Alpha doesn't have to be a killer to rule. Yet I have to protect my family at all costs."

"Whatever happens, we'll face it together, as we have in the past." Ruby took Chomper's clawed hand, gazing into his eyes. "There is no challenge we can't win so long as we're together."

"Ruby, I think we need to relocate."

"But where would we go?"

"The Great Valley. It's the safest place, where Claw will be around his own kind, where Star will be welcomed."

"But Fang?"

"If Littlefoot and Cera are in charge, they should allow our daughter in."

"When she grows, she'll need more food. Remember what happened to you?"

"Yes, but that won't happen to her. I'll hunt and bring back food, do whatever so she is safe." Chomper's gaze went across the Big Water. "It'll be best for all of us."

"But this is our home."

"Ruby, our home is wherever our family is."

She gave a nod, glancing to see Fang and Star. "Star looks different from a normal fast-runner."

"If she is a shape shifter like me, she'll be able to blend in."

That evening around a blazing fire they sat, Chomper and Ruby sharing the news with the kids. Claw looked horrified, while Star looked excited, and Fang was a mix of curiosity and worry.

"Why should we hide like coward?" Claw asked.

"It's a wonderful, lush place, where we'll be safe from danger." Ruby added.

"Yes, your mother and I had many wonderful adventures there."Chomper added.

"But sharpteeth aren't allowed to remain within, right?"

"Don't worry Fang, you'll be allowed in." Chomper offered her an assuring smile.

"Unless she's not." Claw put in.

"What about uncle Thud?" Star looked toward Thud.

"Boss, are you sure about this?"

"Yes, Thud, it's what's best, for now at least."

"We'll leave in a few days' time, when the Land Path appears once more."

In the days to follow, all sent to work, packing for the migration to the Valley. Only a few essential items could be brought, while many precious objects would have to remain. It was bittersweet, Ruby seeing the wooden fragments that captured the progression of the kid's growth, from baby to aldolases. Chomper ran his clawed fingers over where they measured the height of their young.

"So many wonderful memories." Ruby stood in their bedroom. "Our home."

Chomper was by her side, placing his arms around her, holding her close as he nuzzled his muzzle against her. "We'll save these memories and carry them with us in our hearts."

"Are we doing the right thing, Chomper?"

"I don't think there is a right or wrong way, only what is best for the family."

"Can you believe how far we've come."

"And how far we have to go?"

"As long as we're together, there is nothing we can't do." Ruby turned to face him, leaning up to kiss him. "I couldn't imagine facing the world without you by my side."

"And I couldn't imagine my life without you. I love you, Ruby."

Chomper:

"Don't lose your way, with each passing day,

You've come so far, don't throw it away,

Live believe in, dreams are weaving,

Wonders are waiting to start,

Live your story, faith hope and glory,

Hold to the truth in your heart,

If we hold on together,

I know our dreams will never die,

Dreams see us through to forever,

Where clouds roll by, for you, and I,

Ruby:

"Souls in the wind must learn how to bend,

Seek out a star, hold on to the end,

Valley, mountain, there is a fountain,

Washes our tears all away,

Words are swirling, someone is praying,

Please let us come home to stay,

If we hold on together,

I know our dreams will never die,

Dreams see us through to forever,

Where clouds roll by for you and I,

Both:

"When we are out there in the dark,

We'll dream about the sun,

In the dark we'll feel the light warm our hearts, everyone,

If we hold on together,

I know our dreams will never die,

Dreams see us through to forever,

As high as souls can fly, the clouds roll by for you and I."

Gazing at each other, Chomper ran his knuckles along Ruby's cheek. It never seized to amaze her, how tender, how gentle he was. With his arms, Ruby felt safe, knew that his claws and teeth would protect not only her, but their entire family.

"Guess we should finish packing."

"Or we could take break." Ruby's hand ran along his chest, guiding him toward their nest.

"I could use a nap." Chomper added innocently.

"Who said anything about sleeping?"

Flopping into the soft nest, Ruby held him close. "Ruby, maybe should shut the door first." Ruby picked up and tossed her spear at the door, shutting it. "That works. Now, where were we?"

"You were about to make love to me."

"That's right."

"Must I remind you of everything?"

"You don't have to tell me what to do from here."

With a playful growl, Chomper leaned against Ruby, the pair enjoying their break from packing. Funny, no matter how much time passed, making love was never boring or dull for them.
