Chapter 2 : Jingyi City
The sun rose over the walled city, casting long shadows that danced across the cobblestone streets. I awoke in a small, dimly lit inn, the air thick with the scent of incense and the distant sound of a bustling marketplace. I had barely slept, my mind racing with thoughts of the sect selection ceremony. Today would be pivotal, a chance to secure my place in this strange world and, hopefully, gain the knowledge I needed to return home.
I dressed quickly, donning the same gi that felt both familiar and foreign. It was a reminder of who I was, but it also felt like a costume in this new reality. I stepped outside, the morning sun warming my skin, and made my way toward the heart of the city.
As I walked, I observed the people around me. They moved with purpose, their expressions a mix of determination and excitement. I could sense the energy flowing through them, a vibrant pulse that resonated with the very ground beneath my feet. It was intoxicating, and I felt a flicker of hope. If I could tap into this energy, perhaps I could find a way to harness it, to bend it to my will.
The streets were alive with vendors hawking their wares—colorful fruits, intricate trinkets, and scrolls filled with arcane knowledge. I paused at a stall displaying shimmering crystals, their surfaces reflecting the sunlight in a dazzling array of colors. The vendor, an elderly woman with a kind smile, noticed my interest.
"Ah, young traveler! These crystals are infused with the essence of the earth," she said, her voice warm and inviting. "They can enhance your cultivation, help you connect with the energy of this world."
I hesitated, my instincts warning me against spending what little currency I had. "How much for one?" I asked, trying to sound casual.
"One silver coin," she replied, her eyes twinkling. "But for you, I can offer a discount. You seem like someone destined for greatness."
I chuckled nervously, unsure of how to respond. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm just a farmer."
"Ah, but every great warrior starts as a seed," she said, her gaze piercing. "Remember, the energy of this world is alive. It recognizes potential."
I nodded, feeling a strange connection to her words. Perhaps I would return for a crystal later, but for now, I had a ceremony to attend.
As I approached the central square, the atmosphere shifted. A crowd had gathered, their voices a low hum of anticipation. At the center stood a grand stage adorned with banners of the Golden Lotus Sect, their emblem—a golden lotus flower—glimmering in the sunlight.
Suddenly, a commotion erupted in the sky. I looked up just in time to see a massive, lotus-themed sword descending from the clouds, its blade shimmering with an ethereal glow. It was unlike anything I had ever seen, a colossal weapon that seemed to defy the laws of physics. Riding atop it were fifteen young individuals, their expressions a mix of confidence and excitement. They wore robes that flowed like water, each adorned with the emblem of the Golden Lotus Sect.
Leading them was a regal-looking old man, his fierce eyes scanning the crowd with an intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. I instinctively reached out with my senses, trying to gauge his energy. He was powerful—thrice as strong as the young cultivators beside him—but there was something different about him. His energy felt old, fading, like a once-vibrant flame now reduced to a tranquil glow. It was a stark contrast to the youthful vigor radiating from the others, who, while still formidable, were only slightly more powerful than the average person.
As the convoy landed gracefully, the crowd erupted into cheers. The old man stepped forward, his presence commanding immediate respect. He raised a hand, silencing the crowd with a mere gesture.
Three groups of people approached to greet the Golden Lotus Sect. The first was the city governor, a stout man with a booming voice and an air of authority. The other two groups were led by the elders of two prominent families in the city, their robes rich with intricate designs that spoke of their status and power.
The elders bowed deeply, their expressions a mix of reverence and anticipation. "Master Li, we are honored by your presence," one of them said, his voice trembling slightly. "The selection ceremony is a momentous occasion for our city."
Master Li nodded, his fierce gaze softening just a fraction. "The Golden Lotus Sect is here to guide the next generation of cultivators. We seek those with potential, those who can harness the energy of this world and rise to greatness."
As he spoke, I noticed a massive throng of young people gathering around the stage, their ages ranging from as young as twelve to as old as twenty-five. Excitement buzzed in the air, and I felt a surge of determination. This was my chance. I had to prove myself, to show them that I was more than just a lost soul from another dimension. I had to find a way to connect with this energy, to harness it for my own purposes.
Master Li gestured for the crowd to quiet down. "Today, we will assess your potential through the Crystal of Awakening," he announced, pointing to a large, glowing crystal ball that had been placed at the front of the line. It pulsed with swirling energy, colors shifting and blending in a mesmerizing dance. "Those who wish to join the Golden Lotus Sect will come forward, touch the crystal, and reveal their spiritual roots."
The young people around me began to murmur, their excitement palpable. I felt a mix of anticipation and anxiety as I moved forward, joining the line that had formed in front of the crystal. I stood in the middle, my heart racing as I watched the first participant—a young man of about nineteen—step up to the crystal.
The sect members called out to him, urging him to approach. He hesitated for a moment, glancing back at the crowd, but then steeled himself and stepped forward. With a deep breath, he placed his hand on the crystal ball. The energy within it reacted instantly, condensing into a dark azure color that radiated with intensity. The crowd gasped as the energy reached a remarkable three points.
Master Li's eyes lit up with excitement. He stepped forward, his voice booming over the crowd. "You, young man, are blessed with the highest spiritual fire roots! Your potential is extraordinary! I invite you to choose me as your master when you join the sect!"
Cheers erupted from the crowd, and the young man beamed with pride, his face flushed with joy. It seemed so easy, so straightforward. I felt a flicker of hope ignite within me. Perhaps I could achieve something similar.
But as the next participant stepped up—a girl of about sixteen—the atmosphere shifted. She placed her hand on the crystal, and it barely reacted, the energy swirling into a muddy color with an intensity of just one point. The excitement in the crowd deflated like a punctured balloon, and whispers of disappointment rippled through the onlookers.
The sect members exchanged glances, their expressions turning serious. Master Li, still standing at the forefront, sighed deeply. "Not everyone is destined for greatness, but do not lose hope. There are many paths to cultivation, and this is only the beginning."
I watched as the girl stepped back, her shoulders slumped in defeat. The contrast between the two reactions was stark, and I felt a pang of sympathy for her. I couldn't let that happen to me. I had to succeed.
One by one, participants stepped forward, some achieving remarkable results while others faced disappointment. Each reaction from the crystal seemed to echo in my mind, amplifying my anxiety. I could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on me as I waited for my turn.
Finally, it was my time. I stepped forward, my heart pounding in my chest. The crystal loomed before me, glowing with an inviting light. I took a deep breath, trying to calm my racing thoughts. I reached out, placing my hand on the cool surface of the crystal.
As soon as my skin made contact, the energy within the crystal surged. I felt a rush of warmth enveloping me, a connection that was both exhilarating and terrifying. The colors within the crystal swirled violently, shifting from a deep blue to a brilliant gold, and then to a vibrant green. I could feel the energy responding to me, resonating with something deep within.
The crowd fell silent, their eyes fixed on the crystal as it pulsed with energy. I could sense Master Li's gaze on me, his fierce eyes narrowing in concentration. The energy continued to swirl, and I felt a surge of power coursing through me, unlike anything I had ever experienced.
Then, with a final burst, the energy condensed into a radiant golden hue, the intensity reaching an astonishing five points.
Gasps erupted from the crowd, and I felt a wave of disbelief wash over me. Master Li stepped forward, his expression a mix of astonishment and approval. "Incredible! You possess extraordinary spiritual roots! You are destined for greatness!"
"Incredible! You possess extraordinary spiritual roots! You are destined for greatness!" Master Li's voice boomed over the stunned crowd, and the air was thick with disbelief. Gasps echoed through the square as the onlookers processed the results. Eyes widened, mouths agape, they stared at me as if I had just defied the laws of nature. Even Master Li, a figure of authority and wisdom, seemed momentarily at a loss for words.
After a long pause, Master Li's expression shifted from astonishment to contemplation. He had never witnessed such a remarkable awakening in the history of the Golden Lotus Sect. I could see the gears turning in his mind, and I knew he was already considering the implications of my power. "I need to inform the sect master about this immediately," he muttered under his breath, his gaze fixed on me with a mix of curiosity and concern.
"Please, wait aside for a moment," he instructed, gesturing for me to step back. I complied, feeling a mix of pride and anxiety as I moved to the edge of the crowd. The stunned spectators turned their attention to Master Li, their expressions a blend of confusion and anticipation.
"Continue the ceremony," Master Li commanded, his voice regaining its authoritative tone. The disciples, still in a daze, shook off their stupor and resumed the process. One by one, the remaining participants approached the Crystal of Awakening, each hoping to discover their own potential.
As the ceremony progressed, I watched the reactions of the other initiates. Only twenty young people, aged between eleven and nineteen, were selected from the ceremony. However, this was merely the preliminary round; we had only qualified to participate in the main test. The results were based on our spiritual roots, but they were not definitive. Even those with the highest heavenly-defying spiritual roots would need to put in hard work and demonstrate their will to truly become immortals.
The atmosphere shifted as disappointment settled over those who had not been chosen. Some were crying, their dreams dashed, while others stood with slumped shoulders, clearly disheartened.
I felt a pang of guilt wash over me. "Shit, I should've suppressed my energy more," I thought, frustration bubbling within me. If I had known this would happen, I would have held back my power to avoid drawing so much attention. But what was done was done; I could only wait and see how this world would react to my strength.
Among the selected initiates, I noticed a few distinct personalities. One young man, perhaps around eighteen, was glaring at me with an intensity that felt almost hostile, as if I had stolen his lunch money. His expression was a mix of envy and resentment, and I could sense that he was not pleased with my unexpected success.
Then there was another initiate, a boy who looked to be about sixteen. He stood off to the side, mumbling to himself, his brow furrowed in frustration. "This is such a chore. I should have just slept instead of coming here," he grumbled, clearly uninterested in the path ahead. His laziness was palpable, and I couldn't help but wonder how he would fare in the rigorous training that awaited us.
Finally, my gaze fell upon a young girl, around fifteen years old, who was looking at me with a mix of curiosity and something else I couldn't quite place. Her eyes were wide, and she seemed to be studying me intently, as if trying to decipher a puzzle. I felt a strange connection to her gaze, but I couldn't quite understand what it meant.
As the ceremony concluded, Master Li returned to the stage, his expression serious. "Congratulations to all who have been selected. You are now part of the preliminary round for the Golden Lotus Sect, and your journey begins today. However, this is just the first step. You will face a main test that will determine your true potential. Only through hard work and dedication can you hope to become an outer disciple, an inner disciple, or even a personal disciple to one of the elders."
The crowd erupted into applause, but I could still feel the weight of the disappointment from those who had not been chosen. I glanced back at the young man who had been glaring at me; his expression had not softened. I could sense that he would be a rival, and I would need to be cautious around him.
As we gathered to receive our first instructions, I felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. I was in a new world, with new challenges ahead, and I had to navigate this unfamiliar territory carefully. I had proven myself today, but I knew that the real test was just beginning. Would I be able to harness my power and find a way back home, or would I become just another face in the crowd? Only time would tell.
