In 2006 in Florida, a young boy named Clyde looked out the window and saw a woman living in the backyard pool. He is astonished to see and runs away from the window. The woman in the pool went back underwater.
Years later, Clyde is now older as he returned to his childhood home because he still has this feeling that draws him back here. Nothing has changed since he left. He went out to the backyard pool when the sprinklers went on that got him a little wet. He thought it was weird. He saw the pool clean even though it wasn't cleaned up yet. He touched the pool water and felt it was a bit slimy. He thought the pool was not clean and safe because of its slimy texture in the water. He notices a chalk drawing of a woman on the pool concrete. At night, Clyde rests at the couch when something splashes at the pool. It got his attention as he walked outside to the backyard to look around the pool with his flashlight. He saw a pair of hands grabbing something out of the pool. He yells out, but he somehow trips and gets knocked out. He falls into the pool and gets picked up by a woman. He is carried back into his house and lays down on the couch. She ran back outside and into the pool again.
The next morning, Clyde wakes up as he has no idea how he got to the couch. He looked back at the pool and knew something was there. He also realized that someone from the pool must've brought him back inside the house. At night, Clyde walks back outside to the pool and calls out to who is in the pool. After a few times, he looked away and then heard splashes as a woman resurfaced from the water. Clyde looked back to see her and was surprised. Clyde asks her who she is, but the woman asks him if he feels an awakening which Clyde doesn't get. She tells her name is Sally, and she knows Clyde's name which surprised him. Clyde asks her where she lives. Sally said she lives in the blue world aka the ocean. Her answer made Clyde think that she is not a human. Sally said she is a Narf, a rare type of a sea nymph. She said her species name in a different accent, but Clyde found it hard to say it. Clyde asks Sally how she knows his name, and she answers she lived here in the pool for a long time. Clyde thinks back into his childhood memories and realizes the same lady in the pool. Clyde hears something in the grass, and Sally tells him to go back inside the house. She hides back underwater. Clyde saw something moving in the grass. He looks closely and a red-orange animal eye peaks out of the grass. It growls as it looks at Clyde, and he is petrified with fear until he runs back inside of the house. He sits at the couch, and the unknown creature jumps at the windows, scaring Clyde, and he runs upstairs.
The next day, Clyde recalled what happened last night with the creature encounter like he's in a horror movie. He researches Narfs on a computer. He looks at the Narf legend that once in a generation, a Madam Narf will become a great leader of the ocean. Narf seen by a person are called vessels. Clyde theorizes that Sally chose him to be her vessel because he doesn't feel scared or shy when he sees her, face to face. The side effect is to feel different somewhere between his heart and lungs which are pinpricks. He also found out the creature that scared him is called a Scrunt, which he finds weird, a wolf-hyena like creature that can flattened very low to hide and blend in the grass. Its claws are poisonous, one scratch makes you dizzy and woozy, two scratches make you sick, and three scratches will kill you. Clyde would say that it's more poisonous than a snake and more predatory than an alligator. He tells other people if they know about a Narf, and they walk away as if they thought he is living in a child's fantasy or he watched too much of Pinky and the Brain. Even a grumpy guy from next door named Steven Kress tells him to read a dictionary and calls him a moron. Clyde decides to take matters in his own hands and wants to get to know more about Sally. In his backyard outside, he found a kite on the grass and tried to fly it in the air to act like a little kid again, but he gave up and went back inside. At night, Clyde is in his swim shorts as he went to the pool to join Sally. He asked her how she got to the pool in the first place. At first, she is hesitant to answer as something is very too personal and traumatizing. But then, she answers in a backstory from a long time ago: She and the other Narfs were sent from the ocean in search for the men on land to rekindle with each other as one again. However, they were attacked by the Scrunts and killed. She is the lone survivor. She helplessly escapes from the Scrunts without being scratched and finds the pool where Clyde's childhood home is. She has been hiding in the pool from the one Scrunt ever since. Sally didn't get rescued by a giant eagle known as The Great Eatlon sooner because her vessel, Clyde as a child, didn't have an awakening yet before they moved out. Clyde tells Sally his life story in this house. His mom died of cancer, and his dad is not being nice to him with no positive compliments and a lot of negative criticism and scolding. They moved away from the house to go their separate ways. Clyde went to College in NOVA and his dad is never to be seen again. Clyde thought he can't do anything and chase his dreams in what he's good at. Sally tells Clyde he can do something important for the world. He can do great things and not give up your life goals and your dreams. He can inspire many people to help the world for generations. It makes Clyde feel better. Clyde thought he could tame the Scrunt, so he went out of the pool to confront it. Clyde stares at the Scrunt as he sings "Who's Afraid of The Big Bad Wolf" while being scared and shaking. He runs back to the pool when the Scrunt attacks him. The Scrunt runs away back to the grass. Clyde felt like an idiot as he was angry at himself. Sally calms him down and they both hug each other. Sally felt that Clyde had awakened inside of him as he believed in her. She'll be picked up by The Great Eatlon by tomorrow night when she is safe from the Scrunt. Clyde ran back inside the house.
The next day, Clyde is thinking about Sally and knows that she is going back to the ocean where she belongs tonight. He researches more on the Narf legend and found out that a peacekeeping force known as Tartunics, an powerful simian like trio, will protect a Narf on the one night when The Great Eatlon comes and brings a Narf back home to the ocean, and Scrunts don't attack a Narf as part of the rule. It makes Scrunts afraid of them. Even so, a Scrunt will break that rule and attack a Narf. Clyde walks outside and tries to talk to the Tartunics in the trees and bushes in the backyard, but no response, movement, or encounter. Steven, the same grumpy guy from next door, saw this, and he scolds him that he is living in a fantasy and needs to wake up to see reality. He also threatens him to leave the house, or he'll call the cops since Clyde is not allowed to live in his old home anymore without buying it. Clyde kicks him out in rage. He rests at the couch throughout the entire day. On the night when Sally is safe, Sally gets up from the pool, and Clyde gives her a towel. Clyde will try to help when she gets in trouble and be on her side. However, Sally is fatally injured by the Scrunt. Steven is about to call the police on Clyde when he hears a noise from outside. He walks outside to the backyard and gets killed by the Scrunt. Sally is dying with three cuts on her body. As Clyde is crying on her dead body, he recalls his mom before she dies. Sally is like a mother to him and doesn't want to lose her. Clyde mourns and suddenly Sally scratches are healed. She is brought back to life. The Scrunt appears again and attempts to kill them, but Clyde uses an imaginary sword to scare the Scrunt away. The Scrunt is about to attack Clyde, but the Tartunics jump out of the bushes and trees to drag the Scrunt away for breaking the law. Clyde and Sally are relieved as they are indeed safe. They heard an eagle sound. They look to see a giant eagle, The Great Eatlon flying down towards them. Clyde said his final goodbye to her and thanks her for everything. The Great Eatlon picks her up and flies away. It flies throughout the land and into the shoreline. Clyde stares at the night sky.
The next morning, Clyde gets in his car and drives away from his childhood home. As he is driving, he hears a female voice calling his name that looks like Sally's. He looks over to his right side to see the beach. Clyde thinks Sally is calling to him since he is still her vessel. He smiles as he looks back forward.
