When Worlds (and Heads) Collide: The Phantom Thieves' Strangest Adventure
The aftermath of Haru's yandere phase brought unexpected complications no one could have anticipated. While everyone had been focused on her obsessive behavior toward Yusuke, no one had noticed the more concerning aspect of her temporary insanity: the substantial financial transactions.
"I did WHAT?" Haru squeaked, face pale as she stared at the bank statements Makoto had uncovered while helping organize Haru's affairs.
"According to these records, you diverted approximately 300 million yen to a research division specializing in 'cognitive combat applications,'" Makoto explained, pointing to the highlighted transfers. "Apparently you were... preparing for competition."
Haru covered her face with her hands. "I was building weapons to eliminate my 'rivals' for Yusuke's affection, wasn't I?"
"The receipts specifically mention 'neutralizing the Panther and Queen threats,'" Futaba confirmed, tapping away at her laptop. "But there's good news! The scientists cut themselves off from your funding once you returned to normal. They appear to have had enough ethics to recognize the situation was... problematic."
"At least that's over with," Ann said with a nervous laugh.
It wasn't over.
The call came from an unknown number while the group was dealing with their newest crisis: Ryuji's transformation after an unfortunate accident left him convinced he was Son Goku.
"I am the legendary Super Saiyan!" Ryuji declared, his hair styled into spikes with what appeared to be an entire bottle of hair gel. He had wrapped his Shujin uniform belt around his head like a bandana and kept assuming fighting stances at random intervals.
Akira answered his phone while watching Ryuji attempt to form an energy ball between his palms.
"Is this Kurusu Akira? Leader of the Phantom Thieves?" The voice on the other end was frantic. "This is Kikuno, assistant to Kirijo Mitsuru. We have an emergency situation involving technology that traces back to Okumura Foods."
When they arrived at the coordinates Kikuno had sent, they found what could only be described as a war zone. The Shadow Operatives—a group they'd only heard rumors about—had been thoroughly decimated by what appeared to be a small army wearing advanced mechanized armor.
"That's... mine," Haru whispered in horror, recognizing the designs from technical specifications she'd apparently approved during her yandere phase. "I commissioned that technology to eliminate anyone who might take Yusuke-kun from me."
The armor suits were formidable, clearly designed to function in cognitive worlds but now being used in reality against the Shadow Operatives. Each piece featured elegant floral designs that were unmistakably Haru's aesthetic touch, but with weaponry that reflected her darker impulses.
"Ka...me...ha...me...HA!" Ryuji shouted nearby, thrusting his hands forward and looking genuinely disappointed when nothing happened.
"This isn't the time, Skull!" Morgana hissed.
The leader of the rogue scientists stepped forward in the most elaborate of the armors, its helmet retracting to reveal a smirking face.
"Ah, the infamous Phantom Thieves," he called out. "Thank you for financing our little operation, Okumura-san. Your jealousy created something remarkable—technology that can harness cognitive power in the real world! The Shadow Operatives thought they were the only ones with access to such capabilities, but now..."
Behind him, several members of the Shadow Operatives lay incapacitated. A red-haired woman who could only be Mitsuru Kirijo glared daggers despite being pinned under debris.
"We need to retreat and regroup," Makoto urged as one of the armored figures fired a blast that narrowly missed them.
"Running!" Ann agreed, grabbing Ryuji's arm as he struck another fighting pose.
"Warriors don't retreat!" Ryuji protested. "I need to power up first!"
The chase led them through the city and eventually into a strange distortion—not quite the Metaverse as they had known it, but something similar. The boundary between cognition and reality seemed to blur in this space.
"His armor is amplifying the distortion," Futaba reported from inside Prometheus. "It's using elements of cognitive psience similar to what created the Metaverse!"
"I'm so sorry, everyone," Haru kept repeating as they dodged blasts from her custom-designed weapons. "I don't even remember ordering these!"
"Explanations later, survival now!" Yusuke shouted, pulling her behind cover as another explosion rocked the area.
The situation seemed hopeless until something unexpected happened. Inside the cognitive distortion, where the rules of reality bent to perception, Ryuji's unwavering belief in his own identity began to manifest physically.
His hair started to glow with an actual golden light. The ground cracked beneath his feet as he stepped forward.
"Did his hair just... stand up on its own?" Ann asked in disbelief.
"His power level is... actually rising?" Futaba sounded equally shocked. "The cognitive distortion is making his delusion physically manifest!"
Ryuji cracked his knuckles, a confident grin spreading across his face. "I've been holding back my true power," he announced in a voice deeper than his normal tone. "But now, I'll show you the strength of a true Saiyan warrior!"
What followed was nothing short of spectacular. Ryuji moved with impossible speed, his strikes leaving dents in the supposedly impenetrable armor. He dodged energy blasts that should have vaporized him, countering with devastating combinations of martial arts techniques none of them had ever seen him perform.
"Is he... flying?" Akira muttered as Ryuji briefly hovered above the ground.
"Cognitive distortion at its finest," Morgana replied, equally stunned. "He believes he can, so in this place, he can."
The rogue scientists never stood a chance against Ryuji's cognitive Super Saiyan powers. Within minutes, their leader was facedown in the rubble, his advanced armor smoking from what Ryuji had called a "Kamehameha" but looked suspiciously like a concentrated blast of his Captain Kidd persona's power.
The aftermath was chaotic. The Shadow Operatives were transported to a specialized hospital, most of them in varying states of injury. Mitsuru Kirijo, encased in a full-body cast but somehow still radiating authority from her hospital bed, listened to Haru's stammered explanations with an expression that could have frozen lava.
"So you're telling me," Mitsuru said through gritted teeth, "that because you hit your head and became temporarily obsessed with Kitagawa-san, you funded a weapons development program specifically designed to eliminate potential romantic rivals, which was then hijacked by a rogue scientist to attack my team?"
"I'm extremely sorry, Kirijo-san," Haru whispered, looking as though she wished the floor would swallow her whole. "I don't remember any of it, but the financial records confirm everything."
"And you," Mitsuru's gaze shifted to Ryuji, who was still occasionally making martial arts poses, "somehow became convinced you were a character from 'Dragon Ball' and manifested actual powers in the cognitive field?"
"I am Son Goku, defender of—" Ryuji began, before something small and sharp flew across the room, bouncing off Haru (who ducked reflexively) and striking Ryuji directly on the forehead.
He blinked several times, expression clearing. "Uh... why is everyone looking at me? And why am I wearing this weird bandana?"
"Welcome back," Ann sighed with relief.
Mitsuru, despite her extensive injuries, had somehow managed to throw a pen with pinpoint accuracy. "That's one problem solved, at least," she muttered.
"We'll cover all medical expenses," Haru promised quickly. "And I've already frozen the remaining research funds and initiated an internal investigation."
"I suppose I should be thankful that you Phantom Thieves managed to stop this before it escalated further," Mitsuru conceded. "Though I'm concerned about the ease with which cognitive distortions seem to manifest around your group. First Okumura-san's yandere behavior, and now Sakamoto-san's... Super Saiyan episode."
"We're implementing a new safety protocol," Makoto explained seriously. "Mandatory helmets during all activities and padding on all hard surfaces in our regular meeting spots."
"And we're banning all anime marathons," Akira added.
As they left the hospital, Futaba tapped thoughtfully on her phone. "I wonder what would happen if Inari hit his head and thought he was Picasso?"
"Don't even joke about that," Ann warned. "The universe couldn't handle it."
"I'm more concerned about what would happen if Akira developed anime amnesia," Yusuke mused. "Given his natural leadership abilities, we might find ourselves inadvertently conquering Japan."
Akira adjusted his glasses mysteriously. "Bold of you to assume that's not already my plan."
The entire group froze, staring at him in horror until his straight face cracked into a grin.
"Too soon?" he asked innocently.
"WAY too soon," they chorused.
Notes:
AI prompt: apparently while haru was in her yandere phase she purchased a bunch of fully functional battle armor that could function in cognitive worlds in order to deal with makoto and ann but when she went back to normal she forgot about it. the scientists (fire kirijo group scientists) noting this wisely cut themselves off from the funding so they wouldn't be discovered. unfortunately one of them decided to form gang and wreck the shadow operatives up. meanwhile the phantom thieves had another problem when ryuji hit his head he somehow thought he was son goku as a super saiyan. when the phantom thieves somehow got roped into the aftermath of haru's yandere phase they had to face off against the gang as they had the shadow operatives beaten up. most of the fight was the thieves trying to run from the weaponry with haru apologizing. but then ryuji somehow due to the cognitive nature of the world they were currently in and his own altered cognition actually gained the stenght and martial arts ability of super saiyan goku and wrecked the guys in armor. after getting the shadow operatives to the hospital haru could only sheepishly shirnk in mitsuru's presence in her full body cast. and ryuji bonked his head going back normal after haru dodged something mitsruru threw at her.
